Collecting/ ordering take away

PennyV13 · 06/04/2020 22:58

A couple of local restaurants have just reopened as take aways. I want to support local businesses but surely it would be deemed an unnecessary journey to pick up? (And if they deliver, it is still an additional journey and car on the road). What's the general consensus - good to support the business (after all, the government has allowed them to stay open) or irresponsible to make another journey?

I think all takeaways should be closed. Unnecessary spreading of the virus such as forcing workers into close proximity, unecessary journeys, risk of passing on virus through takeaway containers etc. No way would i get a takeaway at the moment

Redshoeblueshoe · 06/04/2020 23:07

Deliveroo are doing deliveries. If my DH hadn't lost his job last month we would be using them. As we want their business to survive.

SnowsInWater · 06/04/2020 23:11

We are being encouraged (Sydney) to support local businesses who have segued to takeaway only. Lots, but not all, will deliver and drop it at the door. We have a couple of small neighbourhood restaurants who don't deliver ten minutes walk away so I am happy to walk to collect and get some exercise, pavements are wide and it's not a busy area so it's easy to keep away from people. There is also a family run pizza restaurant that has been in business for 40 years that I want to support but that is a drive away so I only order from there if I can combine collecting DS from work and collecting pizza. For me that is a reasonable compromise, and within the rules here. I'm sure plenty of people will come along and tell you you are crazy and you would have to wear a full hazmat suit and disinfect your takeaway containers 😁

To me with delivery slots with supermarkets being very thin on the ground, a take away service might be a life safer for people in self isolation with no help around them.

They might basically get by ordering 3-4 takeaways a week as a means to eat while waiting 2+ weeks for their delivery slot or until they're allowed out again.

Also, less people touch a take away container than people that touch the items in a supermarket. Some people suffering with the virus are also probably less likely to be able to cook (and probably safer for their household if they don't)

LouisaJenny · 06/04/2020 23:12

Absolutely keep using them. Support businesses where you can.

Daphine2004 · 06/04/2020 23:15

We aren’t using them at all at the moment. Really concious of transfer of any virus on the packaging (I already clean my food as it comes in the house from online shop). I’m missing my salt and pepper squid.

inflam · 06/04/2020 23:17

What's the general consensus

That we don't need to worry about the above as they are allowed to be open for both collection and delivery.

inflam · 06/04/2020 23:19

Really concious of transfer of any virus on the packaging

One person to accept delivery and open packaging, another to lift food onto plates. Wash hands after.

Hannah021 · 06/04/2020 23:23

The idea of someone else making the food who could be covid infected is the real problem. Not the delivery itself.

I'd love to support businesses by doing online orders and i encourage that because you can leave packages outside until ready... But you cant do that with fresh food.

Your safety comes first.

User7764217 · 06/04/2020 23:25

I would only order cooked food. I don’t think the virus can survive in cooked food but don’t quote me on that!

BubblyBarbara · 06/04/2020 23:38

They are food you can get right now rather than in weeks time. It’s okay you stockpilers saying they should be shut down but others are depending on them. If they could deliver groceries instead..

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 06/04/2020 23:42

It is better if you order on delivery rather than picking it up. Most takeaways around here either encourage delivery or even closed for pick ups. Safety.

I support so I actually ordered 2 already. Normally I have takeaway once a month as a treat.

Purpleartichoke · 07/04/2020 01:00

Where I live we are being encouraged to get takeaways and take advantage of stores offering curbside sales.

Purpleartichoke · 07/04/2020 01:02

Wanted to add that we gave a strong restaurant culture. People eat out here frequently so everyone suddenly cooking at home actually disrupts the supply chain at the supermarkets even more. If they hadn’t kept the restaurants open for takeaway (they come to your car or hand it to you at the door), the store shelves would be even more bare.

Rubyupbeat · 07/04/2020 03:59

We've had a dominoes and my son and partner had a gorgeous roast delivered on Sunday, from a rather nice restaurant (they sent pictures, which we dropped over)

avamiah · 07/04/2020 04:14

In my opinion all takeaways should be Closed .
I’ll tell you why I think this ,
Last weekend I ordered a takeaway and couldn’t believe it when I watched the delivery guy drop it outside my door and he wasn’t even wearing gloves or a mask.
Yes it was in a bag but the big bottle of Fanta that they gave Free wasn’t and he had his hands all over it. ??
It all went in the bin .
I’m sorry but we have to close takeaways .
It’s all or nothing

Marieo · 07/04/2020 04:19

The Fanta could have been washed in warm soapy water or decanted straight into cups?

blablablablablablabla · 07/04/2020 05:15

@avamiah

You don't know that the delivery driver didn't wash his hands before and after collecting your delivery in just the same way you don't know that someone wearing gloves is changing them (carefully to avoid cross infection) and washing hands between customers either; gloves and masks are just like skin they will pick up whatever contaminates that they touch.

What an awful waste of food.

ilovedjerrymore · 07/04/2020 08:18

One local Takeaway closed for 10 days but reopened last night. We know the manager when we asked why he had reopened he said it was because if he didn’t re open he never would as he was suffering from such a loss. Think this is a major problem all over if takeaways are not offered As normal they might have to close their doors for good.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 07/04/2020 08:22

@avamiah Such a shameful waste of food. 🙄 If you have issues with that, just don't order

Stefoscope · 07/04/2020 08:22

The general MN consensus seems to be you're a selfish spreader and totally unreasonable. Meanwhile, in the real world it's perfectly acceptable to eat takeways and make a short drive to collect them.

Itsjustthesame · 07/04/2020 08:29

We have had takeaways no problem. All delivered rather than picked up, and you can have a contactless delivery.

Also I live near some that are open and have been past on my walk or to get shopping - the ones where you can see in are wearing masks and gloves and assume that would be the same in the kitchen. Not to say that’s 100% safe but actually not is going to the supermarket or local shop.

BornfreebutinCovidChains · 07/04/2020 08:35

I have was sceptical at first but I've seen very carful people saying as long as you decant and wash hands, and give it 30 seconds in micro wave it will be fine.

I am so tempted to try one 1⃣ Friday!!

SnugglySnerd · 07/04/2020 08:36

We waited for over 3 hours for a delivery from our usually very reliable takeaway on Saturday night. We eventually gave up and went to bed without eating. It took ages to get through on the phone even at 10.30 PM, they were very apologetic said it was the busiest night they had ever had and they had fewer staff in because of social distancing so they just couldn't keep up with orders.
We laughed last night watching an old cooking programme when the presenter said "it takes the same time as ordering a takeaway but it's much healthier" as in our case it would also have been about 2 and a half hours quicker than ordering a takeaway Grin We're not going to bother again.

WhateverHappenedToBathPearls · 07/04/2020 08:40

The takeaways that are still open round my way are all delivery-only now. We had one on Friday, contactless delivery. We were just careful to decant from the packaging before eating. The food itself was piping hot so no big worries there.

I’m sorry but we have to close takeaways
It’s all or nothing

No we don't and no it's not. HTH Grin
