Collecting/ ordering take away

A couple of local restaurants have just reopened as take aways. I want to support local businesses but surely it would be deemed an unnecessary journey to pick up? (And if they deliver, it is still an additional journey and car on the road). What's the general consensus - good to support the business (after all, the government has allowed them to stay open) or irresponsible to make another journey?

@Thunderpunt as pp said you need some form of electronic payment as a lot of people won't want to pay cash currently. I wouldn't pay for takeaway by bank transfer as there's no buyer protection - you might get away with just offering PayPal though.

We had a takeaway on Sunday as I really want the business to be there when this is over. We ordered and paid over the phone, DH collected it (only person in the shop) and put it in the car boot to drive home. I opened the cartons and served it without touching any of the plates or food. All packaging straight in outside bin, work surfaces and hands washed. It was bloody lovely.

@LemonadePockets i stepped out of the house put my gloves on, went to my car, shopping, back to my car, then i went to the house, put my contaminated keys aside and took the gloves off. Then i was looking at my contaminated shopling i was touching with the gloves thinking shoot i should have kept them on until i packed away... But that would never have worked because door handles and cupboards will cross contaminate...!! None the less it was a nightmare and unachievable ...

I would probably still use them because i didnt touch my face cuz seeing the gloves reminded me to keep my hands away from my face

LemonadePockets · 07/04/2020 11:59

@hannah021 that’s the very reason I would wear them, to remind me to not to touch my face or bite my nails

Whoareyoudududu · 07/04/2020 12:01

We’ve only had one takeaway since this whole thing started and it took two hours to arrive, guessing the take away business is booming atm. Won’t be bothering again.

rabbitsnose · 07/04/2020 13:16

I don't understand why people are worried about the food being contaminated. The virus can't survive in hot conditions. I would maybe not want to order sushi or similar cold food but nothing wrong with curry, Chinese food or anything else

PineappleDanish · 07/04/2020 13:25

It's food. Eating was pretty essential last time I checked, and by ordering from a small independent and not one of the big chains you are most definitely helping out your local community.

Most places round here don't allow you to collect - delivery only. We ordered an Indian last week, paid online and the man delivered to the doorstep. Zero contact.

OP you have to remember that there are a lot of people on MN who are exceptionally weird about food at any time, refusing to eat food someone else has cooked, tipping homemade birthday cake in the bin, approaching bake sales at work like it's nuclear waste. Any decent takeaway will follow good food hygiene rules, whether there's coronavirus around or not. Someone would have to sneeze or cough all over your food - and have the virus in the first place - to put you at any risk whatsoever.

Personally I think the risk from takeaway delivered zero contact to your door is so teeny tiny that it's not worth bothering about beyond washing your hands after unpacking it.

Although be prepared for an avalanche of people telling you that by ordering pizza or CHinese takeaway that you're personally responsible for murdering their granny. Because the only acceptable way to do quarantine for some people on MN is to sit in your house in the dark, wearing sack cloth and ashes and eating stale bread.

@rabbitsnose it may not survive inside a boiling pot (or it may?)... But how the food is handled from the time cooking is over until it is packaged (including package/plates/utensils ) i think is a lot of opportunities...
I find ppl worrying about the delivery process a bit funny cuz the delivery guy will only handle the outside of the bag which would be the first thing in the bin...

rabbitsnose · 07/04/2020 13:37

Anything above 65/70 degrees will kill coronavirus. So if people are that worried then they can whizz in the microwave for a few seconds before eating. While they're washing their hands

MonaLisaDoesntSmile · 07/04/2020 15:52

Most of ours are closed for collection, but we had a pizza delivery this week and it was sooooooooo gooood. Also after making it goes straight in the oven and taken out on a wooden thingy and into a box so no one touched it after that, we thought it was safe enough to order.

Once it delivered the food can be put on a plate and then microwaved for a minute or two.

GrolliffetheDragon · 07/04/2020 16:05

Can you get Covid-19 from eating the virus? Inhaling is surely the biggest risk.

Anyway, we've had takeaways. One of us takes it straight into the kitchen, removes external packaging in to bin. Washes hands. Removed lids from tubs. Washes hands. Uses spoon to dish up without touching tubs. Washes hands. eats. Disposes of tubs (after decanting left overs if there are any. May involve more hand washing.) afterwards, washes hands again.

Chillicheese123 · 07/04/2020 16:09

We’ve had dominos a few times. Luckily we don’t eat the cardboard box so I’m pretty sure we are ok.

nellythenarwhal · 07/04/2020 16:10

Think takeaway collection has been would come under a journey for food.

I have had to rely on delivery because I was too ill to go to the supermarket and I'm a lone parent plus it was my dc's birthday and a takeaway is a treat that they enjoy.

PineappleDanish · 07/04/2020 16:23

A lot of restaurants here are also doing ready meals - set dishes delivered to your doorstep in containers ready to put in the oven or microwave. If you're the sort to worry about people coughing all over your food, any reheating to piping hot would nuke everything.

blablablablablablabla · 12/04/2020 05:35

@Megan2018 What was inside your Yorkshire pudding please? Your meal looked amazing.

drspouse · 12/04/2020 05:44

YOU CAN'T CATCH THE VIRUS FROM FOOD.
So wash your hands after touching the packaging.
Or are you all not eating any fresh fruit and vegetables or any fresh meat and fish?
After all, the supermarket workers putting the fruit and veg out aren't wearing masks.
