So bought these damn devices for 2 out of 3 of our DC purely for them to access more books to read due to Lockdown.

They seem to have lots of apps already on which cannot be removed, when I hold my finger on them the "uninstall" button top right of the screen is greyed out so cannot be pressed to remove the app.

When I change the info on the Parent Control on Amazon for the appropriate book age it doesn't change the books on the actual Kindle (eg there is still a book on there about knives and a Bing book they are inappropriate for her age).

I reluctantly agreed to the stupid Kindles only because of Lockdown, there is no way they would be getting them now and I already hate the damn things.

Does anyone know how to fix the above issues before I return these expensive shit devices :(

Google is no help so I have referred to mn who mostly seem to love Kindles (although feck knows why after my experience today) Confused

I have one, OP, and I use it mainly to read books from my library on the Overdrive app. I only have the Overdrive app on it - when I press down on the icon there's a tick on it, but when I do the same on any other app then it's greyed out.

HollowTalk · 05/04/2020 19:33

Is it going to be a problem that the children will read books that are inappropriate? How would they access them?

HollowTalk · 05/04/2020 19:33

Who does the book about knives belong to?

WaxOnFeckOff · 05/04/2020 19:34

I have one, and I only use it for a couple of things as it's not great. Struggle to get the apps you want etc.

It might be easier to go onto your amazon account on your PC or whatever else you use and try to manage them from there. I find it better to download books from there too.

I'm not really an expert though so maybe someone with better knowledge will come along :)

bookwormnerd · 05/04/2020 19:38

You can set up a kids profile, then you can download books and go on to settings on normal profile and you can add content to what they can see on there part of the kindle, if you pay for kids amazon as well you can get loads of kids apps which is included in the £3.99 a month that costs nothing extra

mrsBtheparker · 05/04/2020 19:38

The only way to remove material is to go into the Amazon account associated with the device, go into My Account and then to Manage your account and devices, you can then remove content.

Khione · 05/04/2020 19:40

I love mine - but am adult and have no children to have access.

I suspect the books are just adverts rather than anything readable and suspect (but don't know) if, having engaged parental controls, you switch off and back on again at least some of the stuff that is innappropriate will go.

MyDcAreMarvel · 05/04/2020 19:41

Why did you buy fires for books?

bookwormnerd · 05/04/2020 19:41

To add a kids profile just go to the bit at top and pull down, you will see a green circle with person icon, press it and then you can add user. It will ask if want a childrens profile or adult. To add content go to settings and go to profiles, press childs profile, press share content and then you can choose books and apps they can see

Veterinari · 05/04/2020 19:43

You don't need a kindle fire for books. Regular kindles would have been better and don't have screen glare issues either.

dementedpixie · 05/04/2020 19:46

If you only wanted them for reading then you should have bought kindle e-readers not a tablet

bridgetreilly · 05/04/2020 19:53

I would return them and get actual kindle ereaders. They don't need Kindle Fire tablets for that.

I still have no idea at all why Amazon chose to brand these two completely different devices with almost identical and easily confused names.

HollowTalk · 05/04/2020 19:54

A Kindle ereader like Paperwhite can't be used with the Overdrive app for library books.

ChicCroissant · 05/04/2020 19:56

Is the book about knives yours and you have set up a family account to share the books, is that why it is appearing on the other kindles?

I've got a Kindle Fire, I use it for reading as well but also as a tablet. I've not set up any sharing of books though so can't help with that bit, sorry! You can set them up as Fire for Children but that blocks access to the internet (might not matter if they are just used as readers but not sure how they download content otherwise as I haven't tried that bit).

Leave it a day and try tomorrow - it is really frustrating when you can't get something working!

CheshireDing · 05/04/2020 20:28

Thank you everyone !

I don't have on line books so the knife book has not copied from my Amazon account. I say inappropriate in that I have made the age on the Parental Control bit 6-8 years (for the 8 year old) but the knife book is still showing when I go back to the Kindle device - its not cutlery knives, it's BIG knives. It also still shows a Bing book on the Kindle even though I have removed that and would not expect it to show in the 6-8 age range.

I don't understand what is the point of putting ages when it just seems to be showing whatever it wants anyway and not removing the wrong books :(

I bought Fires because DH said the cheaper Kindles wouldn't have the pictures from the books etc and that apparently everyone is raving about Kindle Fires on the reviews.

Need more wine.

WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa · 05/04/2020 20:37

Someone has downloaded it. If you go into amazon and put the book title in, there should be greyish box near the top of the page giving the date of purchase.

CuriousCatCatcher · 05/04/2020 20:42

Pay £5.99 a month for them both to play games, ditch the book idea and drink more wine while they chill out with headphones on for hours

Wine
CheshireDing · 05/04/2020 21:01

God now it's showing a sinister book about Bats whist also showing Kipper Gets Nits FFS - neither of which DC8 needs to be looking at.

I just have a normal Amazon account to order stuff to be posted to me on, no books to download or anything.

Am eating the last remaining cheese and crackers and wine in desperation.

OP posts:
HollowTalk · 05/04/2020 23:52

I think those are just books they are recommending, OP. As long as you make it impossible for them to order something without you being present then there's nothing they can do with the books.

DelphicOracle · 06/04/2020 00:27

I bought one for my son at Xmas as he had an old kindle and wanted one backlit ... it was utterly utterly shit ... totally geared for apps and gaming not for reading at all .

Sent it back and bought a new version of the kindle that is backlit - so much better and he loves it

MinorArcana · 06/04/2020 00:27

My DC have kindle fires.
Did you get the kids subscription thing that gives access to age appropriate books / apps / videos? That has stacks of content provided, that kids can use, without parental pre-approval.

If so, if you go to your child’s profile in Settings, there should be - under Manage Your Child’s Content - an option to Remove Content.
Tap that, one option is to Remove Unwanted Fire for Kids Unlimited Items.
You can block books / videos / apps that you don’t want your child to see using that, but that’s just for blocking individual items. As far as I can see, there’s no way to, say, put a blanket block on all apps. So if you didn’t want them using apps at all, you’d have to spend hours going through this blocking them one by one.

Kindle Fires are great if you want a tablet for your kids to play games on, but if you just want them to be reading ebooks, it’s probably not the best option.

Veterinari · 06/04/2020 07:38

OP are you taking about the adverts that appear on the lock screen?

They're just adverts same as you'd see on a billboard or tube station - the books aren't on the kindle - just swipe past

Fatted · 06/04/2020 07:46

Are you talking about the adverts on the lock screen? There are also recommendations pages isn't there?

You need to set up children's profiles on your Amazon account. Then add the content you want to be visible on each child's profile. The kids then won't see any of the recommendation pages etc, just the apps and books you have selected for them. They will still see the lock screen ads though.

Fatted · 06/04/2020 07:47

It does mean that you have to pick and download the kids content for them. They can't browse and select their own.

CheshireDing · 06/04/2020 07:49

The child’s profiles are set up as per their ages and the inappropriate books are still showing and are still readable.

Thank you mn’s for your input. I have given up and will return them after eating all the cheese Smile
