So bought these damn devices for 2 out of 3 of our DC purely for them to access more books to read due to Lockdown.

They seem to have lots of apps already on which cannot be removed, when I hold my finger on them the "uninstall" button top right of the screen is greyed out so cannot be pressed to remove the app.

When I change the info on the Parent Control on Amazon for the appropriate book age it doesn't change the books on the actual Kindle (eg there is still a book on there about knives and a Bing book they are inappropriate for her age).

I reluctantly agreed to the stupid Kindles only because of Lockdown, there is no way they would be getting them now and I already hate the damn things.

Does anyone know how to fix the above issues before I return these expensive shit devices :(

Google is no help so I have referred to mn who mostly seem to love Kindles (although feck knows why after my experience today) Confused

If you’ve signed up to the kids subscription when you buy a kindle fire for kids, then children can browse and select their own content.

Access to age appropriate apps / books / videos is provided in the kids subscription, and all available age appropriate content is visible from the child’s profile.

You can add extra stuff you’ve purchased yourself if you wish, but there’s a lot they can select without parental input.

There are two possibilities:

Someone in your family has downloaded the books and they can indeed been read.

Or

These are the adverts or suggestions that show up and can't be read.

Which is it?

I love my kindle, but it's a paperwhite which is only good for reading and it does an excellent job at that. I think everyone who is a reader should have one in a world pandemic. We bought our grandchild a fire tablet for playing minecraft. It works brilliantly at that, but wouldn't be so good for reading books. It's more tiring on the eyes because of how it's lit.

Kindles are utter crap, sorry. my 10 year old ipad is vastly superior to our 1 year old kindle...

Subeccoo · 06/04/2020 08:19

I've had my paper white since going travelling a few years ago, I have read hundreds of books on it, it's the best 50 quid I've ever spent. Everyone who loves reading needs one in this lockdown, I'm off work and spend a good few hours every day using it.
I wouldn't bother with the kindle fire, they're crap.

knittingaddict · 06/04/2020 08:19

OP, have you checked your Amazon account to see what books are showing there?

When you download a book on to the kindle the purchase shows in your Amazon account too.

My DD is absolute Ely loving reading on her kindle fire at the moment. The kids fire subscription has loads of books included that I'd have to pay for on a normal kindle and she's reading loads.

I am a technophobe but have managed to work out how to use the parental control bit. I have set the age limits slightly higher than their chronological age as its fairly conservative in terms of content.

LIZS · 06/04/2020 08:27

You can manage the content from your amazon account, so remove anything inappropriate, and set the kindles to need a password to download any apps or books so dc cannot do so without you knowing. If you order a kindle book form your online amazon account you can decide which device it goes to.

knittingaddict · 06/04/2020 08:28

If you look on Amazon it is clear that there is really no such thing as a Kindle Fire. They are two very different things.

If you search for ereaders then the Fire doesn't even show up and if you search for Fire tablets it doesn't mention Kindle in the titles or possibly in the descriptions either.

Op I know the Fire tablets are considerably cheaper, but I would consider a Kindle Paperwhite, if you can possibly afford it. They won't strain the eyes nearly as much as reading from a tablet will.

MinorArcana · 06/04/2020 08:48

A kindle fire for kids is completely different to a normal kindle.

If someone in OP’s family had bought the book on knives from an adult account, then they’d have had to go onto the settings on the adult profile, and manually add it. Then it would show up under “added for you” on the child’s profile.

We do get available content that is on the young side - such as Bing books - but I’ve not really seen available content that I’d consider inappropriately old for my DC on their profiles.

You have bought the kindle fire tablets and they have apps and videos as part of the fire for kids unlimited subscription.

If you want them to read books, you should have got a kindle for kids
www.amazon.co.uk/amazon-kindle-kids-edition-includes-access-to-thousands-of-books-blue-cover/dp/B07NMXR6DG?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

You bought the wrong thing and if it's not suitable for what you need, you can return them. YABU for not have done your research before buying.

NotGenerationAlpha · 06/04/2020 08:55

I got my DC 8 a kindle kids edition for this lockdown so she has more books to read. She already has a kindle fire tablet.

Soubriquet · 06/04/2020 09:02

Yeah it’s different if you have the kids subscription activated

To remove apps on that, you need to hold down on the app and it will come up with uninstall/delete app

Normal kindle won’t have age restrictions but the kids kindle does

ChicCroissant · 06/04/2020 11:35

I read books on my Kindle Fire. The drawback is that the Amazon version of the Play store has limited apps, but you can use them as a reader and a tablet.

It does have adverts when you turn it on. Irritating, but they are gone in a swipe!
