Only 1 wash cycle drains and spins on washing machine

Which happens to be a 60degree wash. No other wash cycle will work - it washes, appears to rinse, but then just won't drain or spin.
The troubleshooting guide says that it's a problem with a pipe or the filter (don't know where these are and am not strong enough to remove machine from where it is to investigate the back of it. But since it works on one wash cycle, I'm thinking it's not either of these problems as then it surely wouldn't work on any cycle?
Machine is out of warranty.
Presumably I'm going to need a new machine? I suppose the one I want is a low temp option and a hand wash option, so until end of lockdown I'll actually have to hand wash?
I don't think you can buy washing machines anymore as they're none essential shops I think?

Oh my AIBU is - has anyone got a miraculous solution to this?

No you wont need a new washer but you may have to manage with one cycle until after lockdown as no repair person will be able to come

Queenie8 · 05/04/2020 14:06

The filter will be at the front, usually at the bottom. Open the cover, have lots of towels ready on the floor, and twist open the filter, it will come out, but if something is trapped (usually a sock) it will take time, I've had to slot a knife in to try to unjiggle it.

Or YouTube how to open the trap.

Picklypickles · 05/04/2020 14:10

I don't know anything about whether or not you can fix your machine but just to let you know I got a new washing machine delivered yesterday after the old one decided to die on Monday so you can still buy them, ours came from Currys and two men brought it into the house and me and the children stayed upstairs while partner kept a 2m distance while they brought in the new one and took away the old one. We had to unpack and set up ourselves.

Balmytissues · 05/04/2020 14:26

Problem is that I wouldn't have a hope in hell of hooking a new one up.

Oh - if that's the filter - I've checked that and it's clear - previously found a colour catcher sheet stuck in there before, and it seemed to work fine, but it's just the other cycles that don't work, which makes me think it's the electronics rather than mechanical?

It's a very very basic machine - this is it www.argos-support.co.uk/instruction-manual/4834485-proaction-wmns610p-6kg-1000-spin-washing-machine-white.pdf

Do Curry's have an option to pay for installation still? Picklypickles?

no repair person will be able to come Yes that's what I was fearing *NomorePolitics

Balmytissues · 05/04/2020 14:33

I guess I could get my lazy ass working and hand wash what needs to be hand washed I suppose.

OP posts:
Balmytissues · 05/04/2020 14:35

Stoopid machine isn't even 3 years old yet - it's about 2 and a half. A mere baby! :(

OP posts:
Balmytissues · 05/04/2020 14:37

I suppose that's what I get for only being able to pay for the cheapest machine on the market. They probably don't have a long shelf life.

Balmytissues · 05/04/2020 14:39

Thing is, my laptop and phone are also on their last legs and need replacing and I just can't afford to replace one really, let alone all three.

OP posts:
Balmytissues · 05/04/2020 14:41

It's not throwing up an error in the lights either - it was before when the colour catcher sheet was stuck in the filter. It's not displaying any error now though.

Can you do the wash you would normally do, then put it on the setting that drains/spins and skip to that bit? You could with my machine...

HarrietSchulenberg · 05/04/2020 14:50

Repair men CAN still work, if they choose to do so. My machine broke last week and my usual repair man came out. He checked first that no-one in the house had virus symptoms. He'd checked with Public Health England and was permitted to work on essential repairs, max 2-3 visits per day. Washing machines and cookers are classed as essential repairs.
Worth ringing around to see if you can find someone.

welldonejean · 05/04/2020 14:52

It’s ALWays the filter! Always! And dead easy.
Look at the front very bottom, there’ll be a big plastic cap that you can unscrew.
Get an old towel and a bowl, undo it - water will come out. Once it’s stopped pop your band in there and clean out the fluff and bits.
Congrats - you’ve just cleaned the filter.
We had a machine not drain - filter
Not click on all options for temp - filter
Leak - filter
Not spin properly - you guessed it, cleaned the filter and it was fine.

HarrietSchulenberg · 05/04/2020 14:53

Can you hear the motor running and the pump working when it hits the spin cycle? If your filter is clear it could be your pump that's gone. Is the drum turning OK on the wash cycle?

Bamaluz · 05/04/2020 15:02

I would try doing a wash cycle while it is empty to see if it spins.

And as someone already suggested, could you use the spin setting after a normal wash

Inforthelonghaul · 05/04/2020 15:03

If it’s spinning and draining on one cycle still then it can’t be the pump of filters or it wouldn’t be doing it at all. Do you have a program for just spin and drain? My machine does and if it works on yours I would just do my usual wash then run the second program to spin and drain. What a pain OP.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 05/04/2020 15:03

I would do the same. Mine has spin drain program. Takes 4-9 min

Balmytissues · 05/04/2020 15:37

Inforthelonghaul Tried that, that won't work either.

The only thing that works is a 60 degree wash.

I've checked the filter thing at the front and it's clear.

It's something else, as everything works fine, perfectly fine on the 60 degree wash.

The spin cycle doesn't work. The hand wash cycle doesn't work. The sports wash doesn't work. The daily wash doesn't work. The 40 degree wash doesn't work. Nothing works apart from the 60 degree wash.

When I say it doesn't work, I mean it does everything apart from drain and spin.

OP posts:
Balmytissues · 05/04/2020 15:42

I would try doing a wash cycle while it is empty to see if it spins.

Tried that! As I said, the only cycle that will drain and spin is the 60 degree wash. Nothing else will drain and spin.

Tried that numerous times. Nothing happens. It makes noises like it's trying to spin, but doesn't do anything. But it will happily drain and spin on the 60 degree wash.

OP posts:
Balmytissues · 05/04/2020 15:46

I can survive handwashing things that can't go into a 60 degree wash I suppose.
