Only 1 wash cycle drains and spins on washing machine

Which happens to be a 60degree wash. No other wash cycle will work - it washes, appears to rinse, but then just won't drain or spin.
The troubleshooting guide says that it's a problem with a pipe or the filter (don't know where these are and am not strong enough to remove machine from where it is to investigate the back of it. But since it works on one wash cycle, I'm thinking it's not either of these problems as then it surely wouldn't work on any cycle?
Machine is out of warranty.
Presumably I'm going to need a new machine? I suppose the one I want is a low temp option and a hand wash option, so until end of lockdown I'll actually have to hand wash?
I don't think you can buy washing machines anymore as they're none essential shops I think?

When it spins on 60, is it the full blown towards the end machine taking off (that may just be mine!) spin or is it just merrily spinning along?

winterisstillcoming · 05/04/2020 15:49

Our hotpoint repair man came out last week. He had mask and gloves on. I let him in at a distance. He did his thing and left. They will come as long as no one in the house has symptoms.

Balmytissues · 05/04/2020 15:51

If it’s spinning and draining on one cycle still then it can’t be the pump of filters or it wouldn’t be doing it at all. Do you have a program for just spin and drain? My machine does and if it works on yours I would just do my usual wash then run the second program to spin and drain. What a pain OP.
Tried that, it won't drain and spin on anything other than the 60 degree wash. It's driving me fucking bonkers. I put whites on at 60, which is fine, but now I'm having to put colours and delicates on at 60.

Nope - it does a normal drain and spin.

I'm baffled quite frankly!

I don't think this machine has a dedicated repair man service lol. I just thought that maybe there was an obvious solution I was missing. I'll survive with handwashing no doubt!

I think a repair man might cost more than a new machine. Plus, since it works perfectly on one wash, I don't think it's a mechanical fault.

You absolutely CAN fit a washing machine. Its probably one of the simplest things you can fix in your own home.
Have a look on YouTube to set your mind at rest.

TechGinny · 05/04/2020 15:58

Sounds stupid, but have you tried unplugging it/turning the power off, leaving it for a couple of minutes and then turning back on? Worth a try, sometimes they just get their knickers in a twist

Balmytissues · 05/04/2020 16:03

*Northernsoullover I weigh 7 stone and would have to try to manoeuvre a machine under a counter on my own - not happening. Let alone trying to get the one out that's there (I've tried in a cleaning frenzy to try to move it - it didn't move a millimetre haha).

Just wash everything on 60. It will come back to life soon. I wash everything at 60. It’s fine. Mine is only 2.5 years old too and is extremely temperamental. I almost replaced it at Christmas but it’s now working again on a couple of settings. Just keep going with it I’d say.

Looks like spares are unlikely to be available for that machine. It's a no name Chinese import rebranded for Argos.
A repair man alone will likely cost you a fair proportion of the cost of a new machine with no guarantee of a fix, especially if parts are needed.
Stick to a well known rand if you can - parts will be more likely to be available for longer. What can you afford?
AO ha decent bspec/brand ones starting at £199 delivered, which is only less than £20 more than no name ones. ao.com/product/ewd81482w-indesit-my-time-washing-machine-white-37193-1.aspx

millymae · 05/04/2020 16:24

How do you select your programme - is it a dial?
My machine is a 9 year old pretty basic Hoover which had no end of problems in the first few years - all to do with the programme selector.
I had taken out one of those service plans everyone says you shouldn’t and it was only after the engineer had been out 6 or 7 times they decided that a whole new selector dial was needed.
The new dial took weeks to arrive, a few minutes for the engineer to fit and since then the machine has worked perfectly.

Bisforbert · 05/04/2020 16:30

Just a warning, my washing machine broke on Friday, I have new one being delivered tomorrow from Appliances Direct, they will leave it outside but won't bring it in, the same for removal of an old one, AO are the same and Currys have now stopped. I don't have a problem with moving and unplumbing/plumbing in but if you do you need to check carefully that they will do this if you are going to buy another one.

rosiejaune · 05/04/2020 16:53

Can you turn the temperature down on a cycle? Mine has separate spin speed and temp dials, so even if I put it on a 60C cycle I can turn it down to cold/30C/40C.

This bit from the manual implies you can:

"When you select a new programme, there won’t be any display on the temperature adjustment leds on the display panel. When you press the temperature adjustment button, the max. temperature value of the programme you have selected shall appear on the led display panel.
You can gradually decrease the washing water temperature between the maximum washing water temperature of the selected programme and cold washing selections by pressing temperature adjustment button. "

BreconBeBuggered · 05/04/2020 17:06

When my machine stops spinning, I do the front filter thing everyone's suggesting, but sooner or later some gunk has to be removed from one of the pipe fittings that go under the sink. DH does that bit as I have shoulder problems and can't get in there, but it doesn't look that complex. Have a look at the manual. Maybe the hotter water is managing to bypass a greasy blockage. Can you tell I'm not technically minded?

Seventyone72seventy3 · 05/04/2020 17:11

Does it have a digital display? We had this problem with ours and it was a chip (?) problem and basically the "computer" of the washing machine broke just out of the warranty period!

Pollony · 05/04/2020 17:28

I came to suggest the same as techginny switch the power off, leave for a few minutes or overnight and try it again.

Zaphodsotherhead · 05/04/2020 17:29

Mine is exactly the same - well, nearly. Every third wash or so, it refuses to properly rinse and spin. I only ever use 'quick wash' but sometimes run it at 60 and sometimes at 40. I drain the machine by taking the filter off (which never has anything stuck in it, but the very cheap and basic machines don't seem to have a proper 'filter', just an unscrewable cap that lets water out). After that it's fine again for another three washes.

I'm assuming that something gets jammed inside the machine and stops it working properly. How taking the front off and putting it back on again makes it work again, i have no idea.

Distressingtimes · 05/04/2020 17:33

When I say it doesn't work, I mean it does everything apart from drain and spin

It’s always the bushes on my machine when this happens. It’s a cheap part to replace but I would have to call a man because washing machines are heavy.

A pp has said engineers are allowed to come out so give one a call. It will be cheaper than a new machine

HavenDilemma · 05/04/2020 18:11

Sounds like the chip or the circuit board has buggered

HavenDilemma · 05/04/2020 18:11

In other words it's not worth repairing

gamerchick · 05/04/2020 18:13

Unhook it from underneath the sink and check the connecter bit isn't blocked. That can happen.

Balmytissues · 07/04/2020 11:18

Oh - never noticed that about changing the temp. I'll read the instruction manual again and see if I can get the 60 degree wash to wash at a lower temp. Thanks @rosiejaune
To answer the other question, it doesn't have a digital display - I think this particular model was engineered in 1956 Grin. It has a round dial, which you manually move around to select the wash.
It knows that it's doing a different wash, because on the hand wash cycle, it will turn the drum slowly during the wash cycle, as it should. It just then makes great efforts to drain and spin, but won't.
There isn't a hope in hell of me knowing or being able to do anything with it. A toddler would be more mechanically capable than me.

I'll defo try to figure out how to put it on a lower temp on the 60 degree wash (instructions not the easiest to follow).

Other than that, it's back to the land of my forefathers and just handwashing myself.

Doesn't sound like they'll actually fit it from what you're saying, given CV at the moment. And I have no-one to help do it for me. Well, I don't live with anyone so can't ask anyone to come over.

Thanks for the help. I'll let you know if the suggestion about changing the temp works when I next need to do a low temp wash.
