Death of 2 Nurses

shirleybanister · 05/04/2020 11:56

Am I being unreasonable to think that nurses, especially those with dependent children, should not be risking their lives, caring for Covid 19 patients, without adequate PPE?
I can’t tell you how sad I felt to hear of the deaths of two nurses, both working in acute medical units, both with 3 children.
A weekly round of applause isn’t going to help bereaved families come to terms with their grief, nor is it going to help pay their bills.

There have been 4 nurses that died this week. The first was a male nurse in his fifties. I felt sad when Ruth May didn’t mention him as well in her speech on Friday. It’s hearbreaking

ohtheholidays · 05/04/2020 14:50

I'd say bloody name and shame Sparky87

I think whoever they are Mumsnet should bloody ban them!

I hope to God none of them need medical help whilst this all going on,they'd soon bloody complain if they did and they found out that it wouldn't be coming or would take hours because they've let everyone that has a family and works there go home.

Whoever you are you shit heads get a fucking clue and be bloody thankful for people like Sparky87 who is looking after other peoples loved ones whilst they're in the full grip of this horrible horrible illness!

CarmonEileen · 05/04/2020 14:56

@Sparky87 from Mumsnet? Hmm should be ashamed themselves. My husband is currently on call. He is collecting samples of potential Covid19 from all over the county to be tested, I am a keyworker and will be at school next week looking after keyworkers children. I worry for my family yet continue to do what I can. Makes me so angry that folk continue to abuse!!

There were 3 nurses a young man 23. Very very said absolutely disgraceful the PPE equipment is scare. The first case in the UK was January 31st. Awful tragedy.

EmeraldShamrock · 05/04/2020 15:24

4 sorry even worse. Sad

middleager · 05/04/2020 15:25

One of the nurses worked at my local hospital.
It's appalling that PPE is not in place, or consistent testing.

Frankiecandle · 05/04/2020 15:32

I'm not sure dragging peoples names from another thread is a good idea, especially as you were bloody awful to the OP on that thread, Sparky.

Sparky87 · 05/04/2020 15:33

I was and I apologised.

boredboredboredboredbored · 05/04/2020 15:35

Even with PPE I've had enough!!! I had a patient tell me off for talking too loudly to him earlier today whilst trying to do an assessment (community nurse specialist mainly working with respiratory patients, (he was rude with it too - I apologised. The problem is I can't breath properly in the mask it's so claustrophobic , the glasses steam up and I can't gauge the volume of my voice. One of the patients I saw last week was admitted to hospital and has tested positive now.

It's a horribly scary time and it's ok to isolate your family but if you're taking it home we're fucked anyway. I cried when that man told me off and I've been a nurse for 21 years, I'm not easily upset but I've had a guts full!!!

LilyMumsnet · 05/04/2020 15:36

Hi folks,

Can we not bring arguments over from other threads and name other posters not involved here? Also, please don't share private messages as they've been sent privately to avoid being shared on the boards.

EmeraldShamrock · 05/04/2020 15:36

@Sparky87 Ignore them, you are giving up so much to care for others. Flowers

TheLastSaola · 05/04/2020 15:43

So what’s the solution to getting more PPE? What’s the solution to getting more tests?

Do people honestly think they are being deliberately withheld? Every country is struggling. Macron in France is claiming USA is hijacking supplies at airports. Our testing is not out of line with many other European countries (though at the bottom end).

Sparky87 · 05/04/2020 15:44

They’ve been sent privately as some people prefer to bully out of sight. I am working flat out. I, like hundreds of thousands of coworkers, have been isolating away from my children. I hear you @boredboredboredboredbored. I’m getting abuse from families because I don’t change my mask from patient to patient. Per shift I get one. ONE mask. Gloves are more in supply in our hospital but they’re being stolen by relatives daily.

QueenofmyPrinces · 05/04/2020 15:51

sparky

You have my total empathy. I’m a nurse and certain areas in my trust are also only allowed one mask per shift. My colleague has very sadly had to make the decision this week to send her 3 year old son to go and live his grandma because she’s so worried for his safety.

People who have awful to you should take a moment to think about parents who are made to work in such unsafe environments that they are forced to either send their children away or move themselves away from their children.

It’s awful.

Thankfully I don’t work I a high risk environment so I haven’t had to consider living apart from my children, but as redeployment in the Trust starts rolling out then sadly it’s a position I’m going to find myself in. I’m dreading it Sad

shirleybanister · 05/04/2020 15:52

I suppose the big difference is, that clapping is free!

OP posts:
SentimentalKiller · 05/04/2020 15:54

I work community. We are having people discharged home whilst still positive for
C-19 and we are supporting them at home
It feels so risky. The home environment is much harder to control than the hospital environment. No eye protection
But then our acute colleagues haven't all got full face protection

Scabetty · 05/04/2020 15:55

Sparky87 and Boredbored you are truly doing a job most of us couldn’t do.

shirleybanister · 05/04/2020 16:00

What's happened here? Some of the posts seem to have been removed.

OP posts:
Sparky87 · 05/04/2020 16:00

Thank you. It’s sad the OP has stated this thread just to try and shame us on the frontline. @shirleybanister so you think I don’t ask for more PPE at every handover? In every staff room things are missing, vital equipment in patients rooms are missing. I have had to give up my family to care for yours. As have my colleagues. Shall we all
just stop?

NewYearNewJob123 · 05/04/2020 16:01

What's the other thread Sparky?

Seems you were out of order (and admit it) but want to come onto another thread to complain?

I'd like to see the other thread before telling you how fantastic you are.

Sparky87 · 05/04/2020 16:02

I posted a photo of the message you sent me telling me I should put my family first and demand more PPE.

Because that’s how the world works, you stamp your foot and you get it.

Keepdistance · 05/04/2020 16:03

They could have had ppe and ventilators from eu...

There was a guy on news night saying they could have scaled up ventilators that they produce.
We would have had more time if we had shut down earlier. And not held cheltenham/steroephonics/madrid match.
So yes the deaths from too little ppe are the gov fault.
And wondering how they know the nurse caught it in the community. And whether that means from kids - as that was what i was saying would happen in schools.

There hasnt been any mention of teachers getting it which surprises me. Especially as they went on the ski trips

Sparky87 · 05/04/2020 16:03

I am absolutely not fantastic, far from it. But I have given up my family to look after others. If you’re that interested do an advanced search.
