Please, if you have a garden or any alternative, do not go out and use parks etc.

My husband and I live in a damp, dark two bedroom flat with no outside space with a 2.5 year old.

A no outside exercise edict Will drive us to completely mental breakdown.

Stop being selfish and think of the people who really actually need to leave the their property to keep their child well.

Saysaysay2 · 05/04/2020 12:34

Don’t agree. Have a tiny garden that can barely walk a minute in. Local park is huge and I go out first thing in the morning and get my 10k steps done for the day.

Carbosug · 05/04/2020 12:35

YANBU.

The same with people taking supermarket delivery slots they don't need. Leave them for people in greater need than you.

TabbyMumz · 05/04/2020 12:35

It depends very much on where you live though doesnt it. Where I live, everyone has a garden, but people are still allowed out for a walk. Just because you dont have a garden, doesnt mean the whole country shouldn't go out.

TiredofSM · 05/04/2020 12:36

Yeah total lockdown is coming, for sure.
We live next to a large park. We haven’t been out for 17 days as we have a (small) garden and the lark is packed. Police are down there most mornings telling people to stop playing football and not to use the exercise equipment, which is too close together.
They’re getting abuse, shouted at, ignored.
They will use the video of Richmond yesterday to justify it.
People sunbathing? Nah. We need a stricter lockdown.

TheArchSorcererofContwaraburg · 05/04/2020 12:37

YANBU

IvinghoeBeacon · 05/04/2020 12:39

If stricter lockdown comes it won’t be because of what people have or haven’t done. The govt will have intended it anyway. It’s just helpful if they can whip up public support for it first

IvinghoeBeacon · 05/04/2020 12:41

That doesn’t mean it isn’t required in terms of the controlling the spread - I just object to the “if you can’t behave, we will have to be stricter” paternalistic message nonsense. Just be honest and say that they believe greater measures are required rather than some sort of punishment

Deux · 05/04/2020 12:43

Ivinghoe, I agree, this may be part of their behaviour science/nudge unit.

It’s interesting how it it becomes the people’s fault not the government’s. Nice distraction.

CFeatherstone · 05/04/2020 12:43

Yeah this is an exact repeat of what happened last time the rules got stricter. Few photos of people in parks, get the country annoyed with the public not with the government, and then shut everyone in.
I have no garden, a baby and a toddler and I just don’t know what I am going to do if this happens

VaukaPinhvin · 05/04/2020 12:44

YANBU. I live in a one bed flat and it’s doing my head in and I don’t have kids at home any more. My neighbour is noisy, I’m on a short fuse. If I had young kids I’d need a park or somewhere they could run about. I’m ok going for a local walk which isn’t very pretty but it’s exercise. My friend lives one a road near our local park. She says there has been a constant stream of people and cars heading there all morning.

SoftBlocks · 05/04/2020 12:47

YANBU.

Nonnymum · 05/04/2020 12:47

Going out to a nearby space to jog or walk is OK. It's hard to do that in a garden. But going out to sun bathe is not.

BestOption · 05/04/2020 12:48

YANBU. Stop being a selfish twat is an important message. Some people really are NOT getting the message.
If people won’t be sensible if their own accord more legislation WILL be brought in & sadly it will have a huge impact on many that are already being sensible.

I live in a flat, 2-4 times a week I go out for a walk very early in the morning (home by 6:30-7) to see the world outside and get some exercise. I’m diabetic & have high BO, so it’s quite important to try to get exercise). I go early so I rarely see anyone and the air is lovely) but I think these wankbadger a are about to spoil it for all of us

The message from the police is pretty well written.

Compare the statements prelockdown, followed by evidence of people not social distancing, with today’s statements by Matt Hancock, accompanied by all the evidence of people flouting the exercise rule. I’d say the process of building public support for further restrictions is almost finished and would expect them by the middle of next week.

JinglingHellsBells · 05/04/2020 12:52

Sitting in a small garden is not the same as getting exercise.

I fully get your point, but you ought to be asking people to obey the rules, not stay inside altogether. Many people have good reasons - medical ones too- for taking exercise. People getting over heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis- all kinds of medical issues often require exercise as part of the treatment and recovery, as well as mental health issues.

Sadly, I think you are preaching to the converted here.

The people you need to reach are those outside not sitting at a pc.

If the message has not got through, especially the plea from the snr nurse last week who spoke movingly of her colleagues, I doubt a post here will have any effect at all.

Standrewsschool · 05/04/2020 12:52

Ithink a total lockdown will cause more problems. A walk is good for people’s mental health, and fitness. People just need to be sensible!

IvinghoeBeacon · 05/04/2020 12:53

It also becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Threaten further restrictions, people fear this is their last chance to go out for a walk, so they all go out for a walk. Hancock has pretty much guaranteed that people won’t be flouting the rules necessarily, but they will be choosing to go out for exercise because they fear that “others” aren’t sticking to the rules and it may be their last chance. So it will appear that everyone is STUPID and must be punished!

midgebabe · 05/04/2020 12:54

You don't need to sit in a small garden

You can jog on the spot, do burpees and star jumps, dance

You can walk a marathon in tiny circles

krustykittens · 05/04/2020 12:55

I am laughing at those that say this is a behavioural tactic to make people listen - hasn't worked so far, has it?! Yes, a total lockdown is coming and if the British government follows other countries it will be very heavily policed. A friend of mine lives on a gated community in South Africa, they are not allowed to walk their dogs around the estate as they all have gardens and army patrols are checking when they leave that they are going to the shops for food.

JinglingHellsBells · 05/04/2020 12:56

I don't see how it's enforceable. What about people with dogs who live in flats? How can the dog poo?

From photos, it appears to be mainly younger people, in cities, who are not doing the right thing.

Isadora2007 · 05/04/2020 12:58

In those photos why aren’t ALL the cars ticketed and why were all the people not stopped and spoken to? Sharing on bloody Facebook is a pointless waste of police time when the consequences are nil.

But people staying in who are normally following the guidelines as they are are not going to change the outcome so YABU OP sadly- it’s the sunbathing Twats who need to change, not people with gardens who are also exercising.

Ledkr · 05/04/2020 12:59

I think it needs to be more specific.
Dh is police and even he isn't sure about it. He was moving single people on yesterday who were sta on blankets nowhere near anyone and who lived alone with no gardens. He felt bad for them.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 05/04/2020 12:59

Do people know that other exercise exists? It's not just walking or running.
Argument that "people need to go out to exercise" is simply wrong. I understand people who run and such before. I wouldn't want to stop that too, but for others there is no reason not to be able to exercise at home. Anything from cardio to muscle building.

newusername2009 · 05/04/2020 12:59

I completely agree with you OP - we have a garden so if exercise is not allowed our kids can still get outside. Those in flats will be in a much more difficult situation and I dread to think of the impact on mental health.

I’ve stopped taking my kids out for cycle rides as the younger ones can’t respect the 2m distance.

IvinghoeBeacon · 05/04/2020 13:00

krustykittens You misunderstand. The behavioural tactic is in getting the public to call for greater restrictions upon themselves - as punishments for compatriots who cannot be trusted. Rather than asking the govt about other things
