So now we are allowed to visit second homes.......

Is this a case of do what I say, not what I do......
“The Chief Medical Officer in Scotland, Catherine Calderwood, 51, was snapped strolling across a golf course with her husband and kids after flouting lockdown advice by heading to her coastal property this weekend.”

The response from the Scottish Government......
”An SNP Government spokesman replied: “Since this start of this epidemic, the CMO has been working seven days a week preparing Scotland’s response.
“She took the opportunity this weekend to check on a family home in Fife as she knows she will not be back again until the crisis is over.
“She stayed overnight before returning to Edinburgh. In line with guidance she stayed within her own household group and observed social distancing with anyone she was in passing in the village.”

I am sure everyone else who has a second home would like to use it, or check on it, as well! Am I being unfair in thinking this is double standards and an absolute disgrace that this has been defended by a Government spokesman.

It wasn't essential travel.
If she had been stopped by police she would have been given a formal warning at least, if not a fine as well and sent home.
End of.

As for being bullying telltale I've been stopped by police for getting meds because I must go every day and need to buy food frequently alive a small single room. I go once only. I've been reported on MN because of my difficulties and those reports upheld. I know all about how frothy MN has become, seriously, you've no idea the abuse I and others have had.

MumW · 05/04/2020 10:54

Prince Charles, the Queen and the Cambridges set the precedent.
I thought this at the time. It's only us plebs that are in it together.

Personally, I'd love to have the problem of not being able to visit my second home! 🤣
If I had one, I'd be more than happy not to visit it.

KaronAVyrus · 05/04/2020 10:55

Her hypocrisy is unbelievable. You can drive from Edinburgh to Ellie and back in less than 3 hrs so there was no need to take the family and dogs and stay over night.

It’s not the time for her to resign but she should apologise for her misjudgment.

JKScot4 · 05/04/2020 10:55

What is it you can’t understand?
She drove 40 miles to her OWN house, didn’t come into contact with anyone outside her family and back again.
No risk whatsoever, the non essential rule is to get through to the morons that are going to a country park, swanning about in Richmond among the crowds is not on.
You’re more at risk going to Tesco than she was.

Snog · 05/04/2020 10:55

This rule is for normal people, rich people are not required to follow the rules

Bringringbring12 · 05/04/2020 10:56

How do we know now essential travel?

A burst pipe
A security issue
A leaking tap
Just a few.

I do hope this woman doesn’t need to justify herself and that she can focus on her job without this nonsense distracting her

Sceptre86 · 05/04/2020 10:56

In public what could the Scottish government do? Admonishing her publicly undermines her position (although you could argue she has done that herself)and the Scottish public's confidence in her. Behind the scenes I am sure she would have received a rollicking. She of all people should be leading by example. The royal family have just shown that yet again they are above the rules that apply to us plebs and tbh I am not sure why people are surprised at their behaviour.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 05/04/2020 10:56

'Do you realise how much of a hypocrite you are? Accusing me of sneering when you’re frothing for someone to be sacked.Easy to see how the Nazis rose eh?'

Nazis?

Look, she is the Scottish CMO. We have had it said repeatedly to stay home, no non essential travel. Yet she does just that and has a trip to her holiday home. That is not leading by example that is, sad to say, breaking the rules she will have been involved in setting. So yes she should resign. Sorry Nicola.

WinterCat · 05/04/2020 10:56

And you’re contribution is to draw attention to fact that she drove thirty mins to her second home for what was no doubt a very valid reason that would fall under essential... a problem with the house, a leak, a security issue, whatever.

If that really was the case, I doubt her husband and children needed to join her and walk across a golf course. I also think the response would have clarified that was the case.

I don’t begrudge her a night away. I’m sure we would all relish a night off, but she’s in a position where she should be setting an example and staying (at her primary) home just like the vast majority are.

KaronAVyrus · 05/04/2020 10:56

It is not an essential journey to go to your house in Ellie.

Ohdeariedear · 05/04/2020 10:57

I don’t want her sacked. I think she’s doing a good job but she has just given all the idiots who don’t think the existing rules should apply to them a free rein to do what they like and give her as an example when they are rightly challenged. And all the govt officials being trotted out to defend her this morning are not helping. It should be ‘yes she’s made a mistake, she shouldn’t have don’t it, she’s been spoken to about the problems this will cause.”

I agree.

Loadsadosh · 05/04/2020 11:00

@JKScot4

“Calm down prefects!!
She drove an hour up the road stayed in her own home for one night and back, probably safer than most of you going to Tesco.
Stop for a minute and think of her job and the pressures, would you be demanding an NHS nurse be sacked for this??”

But she’s not an NHS nurse! She’s a figurehead for the NHS and the Scottish Government. Plus she’s the person saying what should and shouldn’t be done and the person the people in Scotland look to for guidance on the Coronavirus!
I doubt an NHS nurse would have the energy to travel to a second home, even if they could afford one, after they have completed their shift! They are the ones risking their lives for us, not the CMO in Scotland!

Makeitgoaway · 05/04/2020 11:01

I thought the need not to go to second homes was because of the risk to the NHS in those areas. There would be less risk to most people if they lived remotely in their holiday homes than if they stayed in the city but if they do become ill, they put pressure on an NHS that wasn't designed to cope with the additional numbers in that area.

I don't think the journey in itself was an issue. I'd be happy to argue that closing up a house that was going to be empty for months was an essential trip but taking the whole family and unnecessarily staying overnight was a very poor decision.

Kordelia · 05/04/2020 11:01

I agree with Ohdeariedear too.

I feel disappointed in her. She more than many deserves a break but she has to practise what she preaches and have her break at home.

KaronAVyrus · 05/04/2020 11:01

I don’t want her sacked as I think she was doing a good job.

She needs to hold her hand up and admit she’s acted like an arse, the Scottish government need to say she’s has acted like an arse and then we can all move on.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 05/04/2020 11:03

Absolutely.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 05/04/2020 11:03

@JKScot4 going to Tesco is essential to get food. Like it or not, we've been told NOT to partake in non essential travel and everyone should be adhering to that. Nobody is special that they get to ignore the guidelines that have been set.

Ohdeariedear · 05/04/2020 11:03

@Kordelia disappointed is right. She needs a version of the ‘I’m not angry, I’m disappointed...” telling off. That’s when you know you’re REALLY in the shit.🤣

JKScot4 · 05/04/2020 11:06

@Loadsadosh
I think if you don’t calm yourself you’ll end up in a cardiac unit! Your ! must be wearing out!!!!!!

Btw not all nurses are exhausted angels, considering hospitals have cancelled all ops and appointments many are less than half full, not every hospital is teeming with C19 patients.

Besom · 05/04/2020 11:09

The issue here is her position. She absolutely must stick to the guidlines or there is no hope that anyone else will. This could have been an essential journey for some reason but not with all of the family along?

I don't particularly want to see her sacked and do appreciate how hard she must be working. But I also feel disappointed that she would do this because it does damage her leadership credibility very sadly.

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 05/04/2020 11:10

This. Exactly this.

KaronAVyrus · 05/04/2020 11:10

“Btw not all nurses are exhausted angels, considering hospitals have cancelled all ops and appointments many are less than half full, not every hospital is teeming with C19 patients.”

If you’re not happy with how the SNHS is dealing with the coronavirus why not take it up with Scotland’s CMO?

GetOffYourHighHorse · 05/04/2020 11:11

Spotted walking on a golf course in Earlesferry, an hour away from her primary home.

She has lost all credibility, what an embarrassment for Sturgeon. Why on earth would she do this at such a crucial 'stay at home!' point.

Aesopfable · 05/04/2020 11:12

There is a second home next door to my dad (in Snowdonia). They turned up about 10 days ago, had a Tesco delivery and have had TWO visits from the police and are STILL there.

Why are the police turning up? It is not illegal to change your place of residence even now. And surely travelling back to their original home is 'non-essential'. Just because we prefer something wasn't the case doesn't mean the police can stop it.
