I am following social distancing guidelines.

I am not seeing friends or family.

I am getting nearly all my food delivered online.

I am going out once a day for my allowed daily exercise. Yes, to my local park, because I live in London, in a flat with a 4 year old and no garden.

I am constantly seeing threads on here berating "idiots" for "flocking" to parks and suchlike. But the thing is, if I go to the park for my walk, and see other people there - they aren't "idiots", they are people doing the same thing I'm doing - their ALLOWED daily exercise!

I mean, if you have a garden, bully for you. But I don't, we are allowed out, and I will continue to take my son for a walk in the fresh air once a day.

No, I think it's restricted to the people acting like dicks

People taking their permitted daily exercise aren’t acting like dicks. They’re acting in accordance with government guidance.

VegetableMunge · 05/04/2020 11:36

People in prison famously have fantastic health outcomes, of course.

Sparklingbrook · 05/04/2020 11:36

I think this Coronavirus topic needs some sub topics regarding all this endless arguing/debating/justifying about going out. More threads have now popped up.
A Coronavirus AIBU maybe? With vote.

It's definitely becoming one of those topics you can get your MN Bingo Card out for.

ThatFriendsReunion · 05/04/2020 11:38

People taking their permitted daily exercise aren’t acting like dicks.

depends

Some people use common sense, for shopping/ exercise or even work.

Others ARE dicks and interpret "daily exercise" to act like one. They are the ones who will make all our lives as miserable as possible.

Sparklingbrook · 05/04/2020 11:40

Oh wow, I just noticed this isn't even in the Coronavirus topic. Grin It probably should be. Although MN is all about CV anyway at the moment.

mochajoes · 05/04/2020 11:43

In France you are not allowed to go further than a small distance from your home.

That's not strictly due, for one loads of people in rural France will need to travel some distance to buy food. You are allowed a number of infractions before it's a crime. People can travel for essential work, shop for elderly relatives etc. The French gov has implored people not to travel (as they would normally) for the Easter Holidays because unsurprisingly some behaviours are not restricted to one country.

mochajoes · 05/04/2020 11:44

true not due!

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 05/04/2020 11:45

It's definitely becoming one of those topics you can get your MN Bingo Card out for.

Grin

All that's missing are the cash and tupperware prizes!

Sparklingbrook · 05/04/2020 11:46

Grin I am kind of missing the shoes on or off in the house/cat poo in the garden threads now.

GrumpiestOldWoman · 05/04/2020 11:50

What behaviour?

Any behaviour that's not strictly essential, like going out to exercise for an hour simply because the rules say you can, if actually you'd be quite able to do some exercise in the garden.

If the government impose a stricter lockdown then the family of four living in a one bedroom flat are going to be in misery. That's why the restrictions aren't stricter. They haven't allowed 1 hour of exercise so that some of us can still enjoy our normal routines - they've allowed it because of the section of society who would face genuine hardship if they prohibited it.

HoffiCoffi13 · 05/04/2020 11:51

Sparklingbrook I saw a comment last night telling people that they need to quarantine their shoes for 3 days every time they leave/enter the house. So we could have a ‘shoes off in the house, deluxe edition’ thread!

ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords · 05/04/2020 11:51

@ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords I exercise usually but I'm shielding so I can't go for a walk or jog or horse ride or do any of the things I would usually

@ClientQueen my comment was aimed at the poster who said she thought other people should do the same as her and only go in her own garden, rather than go out and exercise, even though they are allowed. I wasn't having a go at people who are not going out for whatever reason.

Sparklingbrook · 05/04/2020 11:55

@HoffiCoffi13 that would be hilarious. Grin

HarrySnotter · 05/04/2020 11:55

Literally everyone in the park today was being considerate

I wish everyone was. My DD went for a walk through a London park today and left after ten minutes because the opposite was true. Including some clown who tapped her on the shoulder from behind to ask if she has any change. This is her local park where she's been trying to go for a walk most days and she said that it's clear some people are becoming complacent.

JinglingHellsBells · 05/04/2020 12:00

@HoffiCoffi13 We have contacts in China ( child's partner) and the shoes off is not a joke. They have had severe lockdown as you know. They are applying the shoes off rule when they come home.

It's not a joke . This is serious.

nowayhose · 05/04/2020 12:02

*@SwerfandTurf *

Even if an infected person actively coughs in your face, you won’t necessarily get infected because the immune system doesn’t work that way.

WTAF ????

It's the total idiots , who actually believe this kind of shit, that are going to be their own downfall. You really couldn't make it up..............ShockAngry

Thank fuck we have trained professionals who actually DO know how the immune system works !

Pishposhpashy · 05/04/2020 12:05

nowayhose

That's true though, you won't necessarily contract the infection. My son had norovirus fairly recently. He threw up in my lap. Didn't get it. Husband did.

Obviously that doesn't mean anyone should be cavalier but the statement isn't wrong.

I am aware it’s not a joke.
They were also welding people into their houses in China. Doesn’t mean we need to follow suit.

Aesopfable · 05/04/2020 12:09

Isn’t ‘shoes off’ in the house standard practice in China anyway?

poppadopolis · 05/04/2020 12:10

Apparently in France you have an allocated hour to go out and a piece of paper which says so and the times you are allowed out at.

In France you need to get permission by text before going out for anything.

@MadameBee @OlaEliza

Neither of those things are correct.

You have to put the time that you leave the house on your form. That way they can check if you have been out too long. You can decide what time you are going to go out, but exercise is limited to one hour.

We have to complete a form every time we leave the house and tick the reason for being out. Nobody has to get a text to get permission - although this may be the case in other countries.

It seems that from tomorrow we will be able to have a digital version on our phones rather than print and sign a new form for every trip.

Sparklingbrook · 05/04/2020 12:11

I also know it's not a joke. I was just wistfully recalling the olden days when an MN bunfight consisted of trivial stuff compared to what everyone is raging about on here at the moment.

Hopefully in the not too distant future we will all be discussing whether you can recline your seat on an airplane or save a table in a cafe?

LakieLady · 05/04/2020 12:12

We have a lovely area of parkland across the road and are avoiding it like the plague because it is packed with people who are driving there in large numbers and not being respectful of distancing at all. So we wander a few streets away for our exercise, where the posh houses are and have a gawp instead

I've stopped going for a walk in the fields by our house because they have got so busy.

People were queuing to get through the field gates and over the stiles the other day, it was so busy (according to my neighbour, who has also stopped going). Normally, you might see 3 or 4 dog walkers or runners up there.

I'm wondering if lots of people have done the same, because today we've hardly seen anyone walking past the end of our road to get to the countryside.

BogRollBOGOF · 05/04/2020 12:12

The biggest park in town has had the parking closed off because it filled up too much. It is the sunbathing/ picnicking that's the problem as it prolongs the time that people are there and the busier a place, the more the viral load builds up.

I'm still going out running. If I'm going to be hit by a potentially nasty respiritory infection, I want my lung capacity to stay good. I ran a trail half marathon about 6 weeks ago, and am in the fortunate position that going out for runs 1hr+ are better for social distancing by taking me to genuinely quiet, local countryside beyond the local dog walkers' range rather than passing far more people in my suburb or on the urban fringe which is worse the shorter the distance I run. If the rules change then I will have to adapt to them. I've got a nasty tendency to get injured from HITT type workouts that can be done at home, so will avoid working out from home as long as is viable.

Obviously people living in densely populated areas with minimal access to private or public open space face different challenges. Fresh air and movement is still important, but thinking about where and when you go becomes more critical to manage social distancing.

Keeping healthy and active is important both for fighting CV19 and for long term life. Being unnecessarily sedentary does no one any favours. I do not want to come out of this in a few months overweight and unfit, and either facing carrying that surplus weight for life or strict diets because my body is missing both structured exercise and daily activity such as multiple school runs and walking to various community facilities which frequently add up to over 50km/ 30 miles per week. That's hard to replicate in the home!

PegLegAntoine · 05/04/2020 12:23

I'm pretty sure the person who went out for an hour every day will (statistically) have a better outcome due to higher levels of Vitamin D, lower cortisol, better heart and lung function than the person who sat on the sofa with closed curtains for a month.

That’s my view too TBH

OlaEliza · 05/04/2020 12:25

What about all those more vulnerable than them that they help spread it to?
