Tesco rant

orangesandlemo · 04/04/2020 13:42

I work for NHS full time not clinical but very busy all the same sorting out stuff to support the hospital. My DH is working full time at home with 3 kids to homeschool, reception, yr 2 and yr 7.

I completely agree on line shops should be limited so it's fair on everyone but finished my order last night and hadn't realised the 80 limit was actually per item and not line. For example they had no bags of jacket potatoes so I ordered 8, some for wedges and some for the kids tea and that was 8 items. Each fruit or loose veg was one item.

I was trying to also order for a elderly relative and some extra food like pasta and cereal for the food boxes the school is preparing for children on low income over Easter

But the worse thing was quite a few items were unavailable totalling 12 items so now need to still go to a supermarket especially as there is no way the shopping would last me a week and this defeated the objective of doing the online shop and the

It's a difficult time. The limit does seem daft when it comes to things like 8 carrots or whatever. Take a deep breath and be pleased to have most of your stuff ordered!

tealandteal · 04/04/2020 13:45

I also work for the NHS non clinical so get it is stressful but they are doing the best they can. I usually order every 2 weeks and don't normally go over 80 items, looking at previous shops. It is is a bit annoying but if they don't have it they don't have it.

ChewChewIsMySpiritAnimal · 04/04/2020 13:47

If everyone ordered 8 of every type of vegetable they fancied, they'd soon run out.

Elouera · 04/04/2020 13:50

I'm amazed you got a delivery at all!!! I'm NHS and vulnerable (not the shielded group though) and haven't been able to get a delivery at all. Unfortunately, we are all in a similar situation, and some much worse.

GreenTulips · 04/04/2020 13:53

I think you should count yourself lucky you are getting a delivery at all.

They have said about the restrictions and it’s obvious when you add items

You could buy a bag of potatoes or a bag of bananas that would be 1 item

It’s not their fault you didn’t understand the instructions

Onceateacher · 04/04/2020 13:54

Chewchew you can buy 8 packets of carrots under this system, I don't see why someone just wanting 8 individual ones should be penalised. I assume it is too hard to make the system tell the difference between a packet and an individual item.

SuckingDieselFella · 04/04/2020 13:59

The pasta and cereal aren't essential items for your own household. It's kind of you to try and order them for the low income kids but these items are in short supply and difficult to find. If you have to buy pasta someone will have to go to the supermarket and get it. There is plenty of microwave rice, cous cous and other starchy food still available so you could order that instead.

Tesco are the only supermarket locally who are still doing online deliveries. The others are only delivering to vulnerable groups. I think they're doing a great job.

clareOclareO · 04/04/2020 14:08

The system isn't perfect but when everything is so busy they probably can't afford to have someone check every order to see if the restrictions make sense. For the computer to decide, someone has to program it, and that means arbitrary limits sometimes.

I agree it's ridiculous that I can buy 2x24 packs of toilet roll but not 3x2 packs, but there you go.

StatisticallyChallenged · 04/04/2020 14:08

Some of the limits are silly, sainsbury's have put a load of fruit and veg at 1 item, so you can buy 1 fresh pepper. Thankfully ours still had bags in stock but limiting single, unpackaged fruit and veg is likely to cause overbuying if anything as people will buy bags instead. There is a balance and limitations that mean it's hard for a family to buy enough food for a week just increase shopping trips.

Sparklesocks · 04/04/2020 14:14

It’s frustrating but the shops are doing what they can, and there needs to be restrictions to cope with demand. It’s imperfect and it won’t always work well for everyone if things are out of stock etc, but there isn’t really a solution which isn’t flawed in some way.

GreenTulips · 04/04/2020 14:30

They are trying to limit the time needed to grab shopping.

It’s not hard to understand

Onceateacher · 04/04/2020 15:06

I can guarantee you I could pick up 8 carrots just as quickly as 8 packets of carrots.
Thanks for the condescension. (every little helps)

Clymene · 04/04/2020 15:14

They would have to completely rewrite the software for it to tell the difference between 8 bags and 8 individual items.

They are doing the best they can to limit stuff so that everyone can get food.

Some people are just looking for things to moan about Hmm

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 04/04/2020 15:56

Just on the pasta subject, I went out to Morrison’s on Thursday, first time in weeks expecting it to be half empty admittedly pasta shelf was slim pickings except for huge huge bags of spiral stuff, I got one... it will last months 😁
Same with rice, massive bags of that which I didn’t buy as we have rice in but very pleased to be able to get two bags of bread flour

Lolaesque · 04/04/2020 16:31

I also work for the NHS. We've decided to not do online shopping and to leave those slots for those who need them most. I've been going around 7pm once a week to do the weekly shop. Not had too many problems, but easier to shop in person at the moment I think rather than online due to availabilities.

PhoenixIsFlying · 04/04/2020 16:50

I just wanted to thank those that have given up their delivery slots. I am in the shielded group and isolating for 12 weeks. It has been very difficult having to ask others to shop for me. I just wanted to say thank you Xx

MereDintofPandiculation · 04/04/2020 16:52

If everyone ordered 8 of every type of vegetable they fancied, they'd soon run out. *8 sprouts? 8 mushrooms?

You could buy a bag of potatoes or a bag of bananas that would be 1 item But she couldn't. She said in her OP that they hadn't got bags of potatoes so she had to buy individual ones.

Pumpkinpie1 · 04/04/2020 17:18

I have tried Tesco’s Morrison’s Asda & Sainsbury’s and never been able to find a delivery slot over last few weeks. How do people know when to get one?

Clymene · 04/04/2020 17:21

Pumpkinpie - most of the slots are now reserved for the vulnerable she shielding.

opticaldelusion · 04/04/2020 17:31

CAN PEOPLE STOP FUCKING MOANING? Go and actually shop if you're that fussed.

TheGreatWave · 04/04/2020 17:40

Sainsbury's I can buy loose veg by quantity or weight. Does Tesco give that option? If so does it make a difference to the 80 limit.

YinuCeatleAyru · 04/04/2020 17:43

I agree it's a bit incongruous that person A can get a six-pack of baked bean tins but if that is the last six-pack on the shelf, person B is limited to buying max 3 individual tins. however on the other hand if the big packets of anything have run out, it's better to ration out the remaining non-multipack items because however much you wanted a 2kg sack of potatoes, maybe so did the next 10 people after you, and so it's not fair to just let the first few take all the loose potatoes.

hopefully the supermarkets will be on top of their supply chains soon and they will have enough of the larger packets for everyone who wants them.

Livelovebehappy · 04/04/2020 17:44

Op, I get that you think by mentioning you’re an nhs worker may sway people’s sympathy, but the fact is there are lots of keyworkers who don’t fall into the nhs category, as well as lots of people wfh and homeschooling DCs. I suspect reading posts on MN that a large percentage of people feel they deserve shopping slots more than someone else, but the reality is the very ill, disabled and elderly are probably deserving of priority slots, but others just have to get on with it. I currently have slots but once they dry up I will shop at local corner shops. We all have to make compromises at the moment, and it’s not easy for any of us, but we should just suck it up and get on with it.

Redglitter · 04/04/2020 17:50

I think Tesco are doing a good job in really trying circumstances and what ever system they implement just now people will complain

I had an order delivered yesterday and only 2 things were missing so pretty much back to normal

I had one substitution - my one bag of 500g pasta was unavailable so they substituted it for a 3kg one!!!! Bargain mind you for 50p although itll last me for goodness knows how long

TiredofSM · 04/04/2020 17:52

I agree with the limit. Putting stockpiling to one side, the smaller the shops the more orders they can fit in the van, the more people can get delivery slots.
