Everyone has a friend

heartheal · 04/04/2020 09:45

A couple of weeks ago everyone had a friend who was in the MOD who told them the army were mobilised and we were all going to be on lockdown with tanks rolling down the street.

The world and their aunt’s chihuahua has a friend in the NHS.

And now everyone has a friend in the police force.

AIBU to want a return to Careless Talk Costs Lives in order to stop all the speculation and misinformation and blaming of Other People.

I agree. The amount of friends I have whose boyfriend’s brothers are in the military is very surprising. This week they’ve all got an aunt at the RCN or a cousin in a hospital (conveniently) at the other end of the county.

Ghostlyglow · 04/04/2020 10:13

I've found that the sort of people who assume other people are lying are generally liars themselves.

AnneLovesGilbert · 04/04/2020 10:18

I don’t. I feel left out.

heartheal · 04/04/2020 10:22

So by that lying logic if you assumed I was a liar that would also make you a...

This isn’t about people lying this is about spreading disinformation.

Ghostlyglow Funny that, isn't it? I've known two people who were really hung up about other people telling lies. Turns out that they were two of the biggest liars going.

PineappleDanish · 04/04/2020 10:24

It's just the same as people all having friends who claim to have met a child called Chlamydia, or La-a, or Pocahontas McGinty.

Lots of people are full of shit.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 04/04/2020 10:25

YABU

People speculated about lockdown be used it was a very real possibility and they weren't wrong.

There's thousands and thousands of people in the NHS we are all bound to know one.

plunkplunkfizz · 04/04/2020 10:29

We are all bound to know one but a strangely large number of them seem to be privy to extremely confidential information AND be willing to share it around freely.

heartheal · 04/04/2020 10:29

Yes but all that army mobilisation stuff in conjunction with the lockdown that was discussed on here and Facebook was eyewash. Yet was passed on as fact.

I remember a few weeks ago my dry cleaner telling me his friend was in the army, just phoned his Mum to say he was being called back from abroad as we were going into lockdown and martial law. He said he'd been shown the photos of tanks on the M25.

Someone else said they had a contact in MI5 and Prince Philip was dead but they couldn't tell the public yet.

Still waiting.

SwerfandTurf · 04/04/2020 11:00

Ha! I was on Zoom last night with some mates and one of them mentioned that her boyfriend is in the army and bored because they’ve all just been hanging around waiting. Made me think of MN.

Come on random friend’s boyfriend, give us something more exciting than that!

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 04/04/2020 11:03

I mean.... I haven't seen Prince P lately.....

Wink
Hingeandbracket · 04/04/2020 11:06

YANBU OP and there are numerous utter bollocks threads on here that MN has left alone, too.

PhoneZombie · 04/04/2020 11:08

Everyone had a friend who's a telecommunications expert who knows for definite that 5G is going to give us coronavirus/cancer/headaches/kill all wildlife/control our minds.

heartheal · 04/04/2020 11:16

Now you mention i have since Phil for a while...I think I waved at him in the 90s

TheLadyAnneNeville · 04/04/2020 11:24

In my circle we have several... police, firefighters, nurses, a Dr’s receptionist, a social worker, physios, various care workers.

Yabu. It’s more than possible.

heartheal · 04/04/2020 11:29

You’re missing the point there

zigaziga · 04/04/2020 11:30

Tbf an awful lot of people do work for the NHS. It’d be hard not to know someone. I think I know about 10 doctors.

ArtisanBreadBin · 04/04/2020 11:30

YANBU.

TheLadyAnneNeville · 04/04/2020 11:32

@heartheal... are you replying to me?

NiteFlights · 04/04/2020 11:32

I know two hospital doctors but they don’t work in relevant specialities and they wouldn’t tell me anything confidential anyway.

I feel I’m missing out!

EmmaBridgewater20 · 04/04/2020 11:47

Don’t know anyone who works for the MOD but have a couple of friends in the Police (none uniform) and DH works for the NHS (none clinical) so we know loads of NHS professionals. DH hasn’t really said much tbf but he has been working on some Covid stuff to do with cancer patients.

The NHS is a massive employer, especially where we are as a lot of none clinical teams are based here.

I will say this though. They may indeed know someone but that doesn’t mean that someone is telling the truth. DH has been working with a trust in South East so gets their internal comms - one of the points on last weeks was about be careful what you say on Social Media, 2 members of staff were being investigated for spreading Covid rumours that were blatantly untrue. Basically around ICU admissions. People love a bit of social media fame don’t they!

PieceOfMaria · 04/04/2020 11:49

Ive lost count of the number of posts doing the rounds on FB saying ‘my brother/cousin/housemate is a doctor/nurse and says....

You know it’s bollocks when you are asked to cut and paste their sage advice.

SecretsInSpitalfield · 04/04/2020 13:16

Surely everyone knows someone in those fields Op?

I don’t quite understand this thread

gordongopherthe3rd · 04/04/2020 13:19

I don't have a friend in the army or the NHS, I'm feeling quite left out if I'm being honest, luckily I can chat with my friend Boris about it.
