Everyone has a friend

A couple of weeks ago everyone had a friend who was in the MOD who told them the army were mobilised and we were all going to be on lockdown with tanks rolling down the street.

The world and their aunt’s chihuahua has a friend in the NHS.

And now everyone has a friend in the police force.

AIBU to want a return to Careless Talk Costs Lives in order to stop all the speculation and misinformation and blaming of Other People.

Ha! There was a rumour that there was going to be a major royal announcement a couple if weeks ago, all DH work were called in....because someone had seen a major news reporter near Buckingham palace... Turns out they were just in the area but some one spotted them, told someone else who told someone else... 😂

People are stressed and mental health is suffering- it's an awful time and clearly people feel better by repeating things they've heard that make them feel like this is being handled, or they want other people to take it more seriously so they tell them things that make it sound serious- or they just enjoy the attention and it's all got to them a bit. I can't be bothered get too worked up about it to be honest. It isn't as though you're obligated to take what they say as true when it is obviously an echo chamber for nonsense passed around online, so just ignore it? Doesn't make us all better than them by being smugly superior that we ate so wonderful we wouldn't fall for it.

The sad reality is that none of us actually have any idea about any of it, lets face it.

@SecretsInSpitalfield.. me neither. I must be being a bit thick. I suppose there’s an element of “Chinese Whispers” potentially, with everyone being so scared and all. I really do think it feasible that most people know people in the fighting Covid professions.

I actually have a friend in the police force and several who work for the nhs.
Their employees are fairly numerous.

ArtisanBreadBin · 04/04/2020 13:51

@Foghead do you use them to legitimise rumours? That's the point of this thread. People saying "my neighbour is high up in the [insert organisation] and he said xyz". All complete bollocks and used to scaremonger.

Escrima · 04/04/2020 13:53

This did make me laugh because I know exactly what you mean, there are some people who always seem to have the inside track on everything.

I do know someone in the army, someone in the police force, and several people in the NHS but I have no inside information whatsoever 🤷‍♀️

PhilSwagielka · 04/04/2020 13:55

I have at least one friend in the NHS. I used to work in it myself.

Foghead · 04/04/2020 13:56

@ArtisanBreadBin No, of course not. I might ask them them about rumours though.
I did ask my friend in the police force about lockdown and I’ve heard lots about what’s going on in hospitals.
It’s just all so awful.

I know quite a few people who work in the NHS and the police, all that I've spoken to have told me things that are happening due to corona.
