Very vulnerable list - How long?

Mistletorpor · 04/04/2020 09:36

My parents are on the very vulnerable list. NHS letter, registered on the govt website. Also on supermarkets on lists.
Yet not one of the online supermarkets are recognising them as very vulnerable.
I know there are millions on the list, but how long is this likely to take? They are in need of food and other basics, but I have symptoms and we are in isolation now. My sibling lives 180 miles away so cannot help.

I got a email yesterday from Sainsbury's and a friend got one from Tesco. I'm registered to shop with both but not had one from Tesco yet so seems they are working through the list.

Hope your parents get some help soon.

Distressingtimes · 04/04/2020 09:39

Also on supermarkets on lists

Sorry, what does this mean? Do you mean you have contacted the supermarkets to tell them?

AhoyMrBeaver · 04/04/2020 09:40

It could be worth directly contacting shops that are local to them (Co-op or Spar type places), or a Facebook group in their area. Somebody will be able to get a load of groceries to them, probably quicker than you'll get onto the supermarkets' sites.

helpfulperson · 04/04/2020 09:42

I would check their local council website. These should have a list of ways to get help whether that's from the council themselves or a local volunteer group etc

Mistletorpor · 04/04/2020 10:09

Thank you. My parents are very rural so no ‘local’ shops as such.
We completed the phone/online registration for Sainsburys, and Waitrose, and Iceland for them, but still no confirmation.

Local farmland wholesalers are delivering boxes near here. Order online. Depends on whether they can still prepare food from scratch.

MadisonMontgomery · 04/04/2020 10:14

Check local services. We have a local ‘hub’ where voluntary groups have joined forces to deliver groceries, prescriptions etc. Also worth looking on Facebook, as there are local groups set up on there for people to offer/access help. The group I am in have had several queries from relatives asking for help for local residents.

I registered my husband as extremely vulnerable on the government website about a week ago. I also changed our Sainsbury's account to his name.
This morning I got an email from Sainsbury's saying that he was prioritised. I checked the slots, nothing available, up until the 23rd April. (NB I am disabled).

whitedogpoo · 04/04/2020 10:23

I git mine from Sainsbury’s yesterday. Keep checking and Iceland they release them at random times often for the next day

Percypigsareyummy · 04/04/2020 10:25

Tesco emailed us yesterday and there are priority slots available. The Tesco account is in my name but they picked up the fact that my dad lives at the same address and is on the extremely vulnerable list, so we have access to Priority deliveries.

ExclamationPerfume · 04/04/2020 10:30

I registered on Monday last week and eventually got recognised as being vulnerable yesterday so 11 days. I had a food delivery from my council yesterday too.

Mistletorpor · 04/04/2020 10:40

@ExclamationPerfume The timescale is useful, thank you. We are a few days behind you so hopefully will hear soon.

Try the Morrisons/DPD box scheme. I've been able to send one to my elderly parents far away. Keep trying and you will get through ... They only open the scheme when they have slots and it worked effectively for me when I did get onto the site. This would tide them over and hopefully you could then get a normal delivery later. No choice apart from meat or veggie - but one week of food for two people.

I am part of our LA community shielding operation - Central Government are trying to coordinate with the supermarkets but it’s a little chaotic tbh.

We are reporting back to them that this is the main problem for people but there is no solution to the problem yet.

A lot o local FB groups and voluntary organisations are offering support (please check they have a current DBS) or visit Age UK or www.helpandkindness.co.uk

TitsalinaBumSquash · 04/04/2020 11:10

I got email from Tesco, ASDA, Sainsbury's yesterday and all had a few slots available. I filled in the government form last Thursday.

Sugarplumfairy65 · 04/04/2020 11:11

I got an email from Asda at 1am today telling me that I'd been identified as on the list and that they would send further details re delivery slots within 48 hours.

MadameBee · 04/04/2020 11:13

@TitsalinaBumSquash and @Sugarplumfairy65

That’s really good to hear 👍🏻

Sugarplumfairy65 · 04/04/2020 11:20

Thank you. I was starting to think we were forgotten about.

MadameBee · 04/04/2020 11:29

In our LA it has been a huge effort this week with staff redeployed from all different teams.

You haven’t been forgotten.

Dixiechickonhols · 04/04/2020 11:36

Local shops are delivering. Look on your parents local Facebook page. I’ve sorted my mum who has no internet access/social media from home I’m also vulnerable so can’t take her food. Morrisons boxes are separate to normal online, Booths are also doing boxes for vulnerable order by phone.

Dixiechickonhols · 04/04/2020 11:38

Saw they are rural. I’m fairly rural and there are lots of businesses delivering. Someone on the Facebook group will know.

TriciaMcMillan · 04/04/2020 11:52

Contact your local authority, they will ensure food and supplies are provided until the central government deliveries arrive and supermarkets effectively prioritise shielding individuals. Most councils are working closely with the community and voluntary sector to ensure the shielded and other vulnerable or isolated residents are supported.

But do note, the central government offer will only be the shielded individual, not for any other members of the household, and they do not account for dietary, cultural of lifestyle requirements, they remain the responsibility of the local authority.

TriciaMcMillan · 04/04/2020 11:55

Also, just as a point of clarity, there aren't millions, there are 900,000 who have been identified centrally, plus they expect an additional 600,000 to be identified by GPs through their patient lists.

MadameBee · 04/04/2020 11:57

@TriciaMcMillan

The local authority are not ensuring people get their shopping - the government is sending out a care package which contains food.

This doesn’t cater for dietary requirements.

TriciaMcMillan · 04/04/2020 12:06

Yes there are. Central government are responsible for a basic goods box, local authorities remain responsible for anyone who is yet to receive theirs, or it is unsuitable. If they have haven't received anything, the local authority will ensure shopping or a food box is provided. That is the direction from central government. L
