Carrying more weight than I'd like large size 12 UK at 5'4" and a half. It's not flattering on me as it's also on my arms and face (first place to gain weight for me).

When I look in the mirror I don't mind my face but I look horrible and frumpy in any pictures that I haven't taken myself. My eyes/lips look much smaller than they look to me in the mirror and like they're being drowned out by my face. My arms make me look humongous.
I might be at a party hair/makeup done, when I look in the mirror I think I look good but then when I see pictures from the day I feel like crying.

I'm only in my 20s but feel I look 10years older and overweight to boot. DP took a picture today of me holding both DCs at once with minimal makeup and hair scraped back and when they were all looking at it I had to walk away and hold back tears at how awful I looked and so drastically different to what I think.
My confidence plummets everytime I see a picture of myself.

AIBU to feel this way?

@Sicario surely you don't look that bad!
@Deathraystare, yes Jean Rook rings a bell.
Anyway, nothing to do with photos but another shock is using a magnifying mirror! Anyone else find this? My goodness it's depressing 😵

helgahelga · 04/04/2020 16:12

@letsjog Not being funny, but I bet you look fine, and NOT fat and NOT much older. Flowers

But yeah YANBU to think you do, and to feel insecure. Most of us get this way sometimes.

I thought I looked chubby in my 20s..... (I was 9 stone, and 5 ft 5,) and I thought I was average looking.

When look back, I WAS slim - and actually quite attractive! FGS, I wish I had seen it then! Sad

I don't mind myself in photos now. Some I look grim on, and some I look OK. But OMG I HATE myself on film/video Shock I look 2 stone heavier than I do in the mirror, and in photos, (to me anyway.) Blush

What are we like eh???

(((HUGS))) to you!

Mixingitall · 04/04/2020 16:35

I am overweight and don’t like myself in pictures. My pre chubby self looked great in pictures. Should be an incentive to loose weight, but it never happens!

Branster · 04/04/2020 19:22

EngagedAgain I never ever do that! I’m convinced there’s another person living in there attempting to impersonate me - looked in one in a shop once to try it, never again.
Top tip, never get changed in an M&S changing room.

CheshireDing · 04/04/2020 19:29

Pre
Children I was size 8/10 and I remember complaining one day about a work photo which has been taken for the hideous work website, DH said ‘I don’t get it stood in front of me now you look fine but that photo is horrendous’ 🤷‍♀️

I agreed but already knew it would be horrendous.

Or lockdown I was a size 12 and too short for it as I am about 5ft2, I saw a pic from Christmas where my eyes could hardly be seen due to my fat face.

Thankfully I have lost weight since lockdown since I need to keep going in the right direction, if I can’t do anything about the photos I can at least weight less.

That’s my only solution OP, sorry 😬

crosser62 · 04/04/2020 19:34

Because of this I completely and without negotiation refuse point blank to have my picture taken.
My own mother has no photos of me as an adult.

There is always that very awkward moment when someone wants to take a group picture. I refuse and always say that I will take the picture of the group.

Waveysnail · 04/04/2020 19:37

That used to be me. I'm overweight and not photogenic but hot 40 and rh0ught screw it. Smile, lift chin and love life x

Griselda1 · 04/04/2020 19:41

When the current crisis ends I recommend getting a good photographer and working out what you dislike in your photos. I'm a photographer and meet so many ladies who hate to be photographed,a good compromise is a nice lively outdoor shoot and ensure that you have complete control over what photos are shown.
I once photographed a lady who was only happy when her face was almost melted it was photoshopped so much but that's all she would accept.

Sicario · 04/04/2020 20:04

WE ALL LOOK GREAT!

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 04/04/2020 20:10

I hate how I look in photos - selfies are the worst I just can’t seem to get a good angle!

However my wedding photos I look gorgeous! I think there’s a lot to be said for having professional photos with a good camera. But my own photos or ones dh has taken I look at and think “do I really look like that”? I’ve been told I’m good-looking all my life and but I struggle to believe it when I look at most photos!

Orangecake123 · 04/04/2020 20:20

I'm a mock photographer. I know I can take very good photos of my friends because I try to find their best angles but I don't come out well in their photographs.

I'm not very comfortable in my own skin yet.

EmeraldShamrock · 04/04/2020 21:32

I look awful in photos too, I'm not to bad looking in RL I always look flat faced. I don't have a natural pose I missed or ignored the selfie era and contouring makeup skills.
Once when I had my makeup done professionally I got a nice photo but i was caught of guard. The word cheese makes my face crunch.

TakeMeOn · 04/04/2020 21:38

I’m considered attractive, I don’t mean that to be arrogant, but I look terrible in photos.

This is true for me too op. I don't think everyone is photogenic. That said, good angles, posture and lighting can make all the difference. My partner takes awful pictures without fail. I am 7 stones, in his pictures I look overweight. He's taken photos of my DD, I know I'm biased but I think she is gorgeous, in photos he takes she looks like that sloth character from the Goonies.

TakeMeOn · 04/04/2020 21:40

Oh sorry the point about my partner is that some people are better photographers than others, and a photo is definitely not always a true representation of what someone looks like.

CorianderLord · 04/04/2020 22:49

I'm very unphotogenic so I feel you. I'm 24 and an 8-10 and my arms always look huge and my belly.

I'm pretty but look like a potato in photos. It's annoying

PhoneLock · 05/04/2020 09:17

selfies are the worst I just can’t seem to get a good angle!

That's because the camera lens is too close to your face. Your features will be exaggerated.

Professional photographers take portraits from a distance.

youvegottobekidding · 05/04/2020 09:53

I am the most unphotogenic person on the planet, I really am. I simply do not take a good photo, hence why there are hardly any photos of me!

I pointed this out to my sil, who by comparison is the most photogenic person on the planet, she’s gorgeous in rl & on camera. When we were going over a couple of photos we had of each other (daft ones of us drunk) I pointed out how crap I looked she said ‘dont be silly, other people don’t see that’ I can only hope she’s right!

Thistles24 · 05/04/2020 10:15

I get what you mean OP, only I’m a size 18-20 and look best at a 14 (I’m working on it...)
However, I have photos from when the DC were younger that I thought at the time were hideous, but now I see they weren’t that bad, and I’m glad I have them. Some I never knew had been taken, others I knew about but didn’t look at them at the time.
Maybe it’s the passage of time, or maybe it’s the fact I’m heavier now than I am in some of the pics, but they bring back happy memories rather than shame over what I looked like.

EmeraldShamrock · 05/04/2020 10:29

However, I have photos from when the DC were younger that I thought at the time were hideous, but now I see they weren’t that bad This is very true. We are our biggest critics. I look back at photos thinking they weren't that bad. X

PapayaCoconut · 05/04/2020 11:29

I look like a haggard witch in photos. In real life I look like a fresh faced 30 something. 😅 It's a whole thing, OP. Not being photogenic doesn't mean you're ugly.

CoraPirbright · 05/04/2020 11:38

Oh lor I feel your pain. Ok I’m going to sound like a total twat now but irl, if I make an effort, I am not at all bad looking. A bit over weight, for sure, but with my make up done I am equal to most women, looks wise, and better than a few. However in photos I look like an utter minger!! No idea why but my DM is the same. DDad however always looks fab. I so wish I could take a pic as good as him!!
