You know when they had witch burnings, public hangings, or if you are French , public executions by guillotine? Well I now realise that they weren't exaggerating the crowds that turned up to enjoy the spectacle judging by the number of nasty , spiteful posts today frothing at the mouth about how their neighbours are using schools, getting deliveries, standing too close, etc etc etc . I think the posters who are hoiking their judgey pants so dangerously close to their tonsils are the same ones who would be denouncing their neighbours to the witch finder, the revolutionary committees and magistrates before packing a picnic and their knitting and taking themselves off for a day trip to the village pond or the local prison.

I know MN can be a playground for mean girls, I know everyone is stressed and anxious, but omg this virus is bringing out the worst in some people.

Chill out guys, eat Cake if you have it and cuddle a Bear to get your blood pressure down.

I'm glad I've come across this thread. Its been an eye opener to see what people can get worked up over: People guessing who's a keyworker by looking at them and then moaning that they get childcare. The post about not making play dough made me really sad.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 04/04/2020 19:39

There’s certainly a Stasi element on MN lately.

Yes, a willingness to obey rules designed to protect not only yourself but others during a global pandemic is exactly the same as becoming a Nazi

This thread is about "THE RULES" as advocated by randoms who shout them make them up as they go along

The people who havent a clue what thier neighbours do at any other time of the year but are suddenly experts on them now and self appointed judge and jury.
Those busybodies who are blissfully unaware that they are volunteering at a Hospital, delivering food parcels, getting shopping for vulnerable people or working as key workers in peoples homes. But no 'Mrs/Mr/Ms Iambetterthanyou' decides to name and shame them on SM for going outside more than once a day instead.
The culture of being better than everyone else and deserving of unlimited praise and the god given right to judge is becoming another sickness in our society. Its not pretty.

BronwenFrideswide · 04/04/2020 19:57

I'm amazed by how many people think the rules don't apply to them because they know better than the experts.

Follow the law and rules laid down by Parliament and experts is a given.

Follow made up rules, advice misinterpreted by randoms on social media along with their own version of what essential goods or trips are, and these randoms wanting to know details, judge and have the right to decide what others can do and/or are legitimately doing, absolutely not.

As its apparent on the Universal Credit thread its another one of those it will never affect me because 'I'm following THE RULES so other people should be punished', they never seem to think 'what if THE RULES get changed' and they are no longer obeying them through no fault of their own

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 04/04/2020 20:08

Follow the law and rules laid down by Parliament and experts is a given.

Yet it isn't is it hence the parties, grandchildren visiting, meeting up for walks, BBQs , family coming and going. Following the rules isn't a given at all.

BronwenFrideswide · 04/04/2020 20:18

Sorry Just I am not sure I understand your post are you saying we should follow any old rules made up by any old random on the internet? If Parliament change the rules then there will be new rules to abide by, those are the only rules that apply at any given time.

"DefenBaker, You asked if he'd been tested and Yes, you should regret doing so. Don't rewrite it as your challenging his 'thoughtless behaviour'. You are a classic example of the behaviour under discussion here. As you were."

@midsomermurderess I challenged his thoughtless behaviour, but admit I went too far in asking if he had been tested. There was nothing spiteful about what I did, unlike some of the abusive character assassinations that I've received on here, from people who have set their minds against me, for daring to speak up when someone behaved thoughtlessly. I know I'm not perfect, and have admitted I could have handled the situation differently, but the amount of spite directed at me from some people has been far more unreasonable than anything I said to that man.

KatherineJaneway · 05/04/2020 08:02

Who passed that law?

On MN some people are making their own version of what is and is not acceptable and demanding others comply.

I'm amazed by how many people think the rules don't apply to them because they know better than the experts

This isn't about the experts though. Most decent people recognise that no matter how hard lockdown is, its for the good of everyone.
What this thread is about is not debating expert advice, its about people making up their own narrative about people they know NOTHING about.
Assumptions that the neighbour is flouting the rules when they dont know the bloke from Adam and actually he is a key worker. He could be working in the fcking ICU for all they know! yet in their minds they have created an entire narrative from a tiny scrap of information that is simply: he leaves his house every day. That saying "a little information is dangerous" applies here.

Its DANGEROUS to take a tiny snap shot and form an entire narrative around it when you dont even know if its correct and YES- these kinds of illogical thinking are exactly how Nazi Germany and racism started. People took inaccurate information that was not the result of facts but of propaganda and hysteria and gossip and used that to form ideas that were harmful towards others. If you cannot see the parallels here but on an admittedly smaller scale, then you are truly ignorant.
