Just had an Amazon delivery

It's not mine, it's for our elderly neighbours who are self isolating. They haven't ordered anything recently but we agreed to take any previous parcels they're waiting for. Amazon driver looked utterly miserable (don't blame him). He rang the bell and literally passed me the box. Wasn't too impressed as technically virus can spread this way. Just didn't have the heart to argue with him as he must be feeling totally shit right now. AIBU in thinking that if these delivery drivers aren't afforded proper PPE, and are treated pretty poorly by their managers, they might just stop caring altogether? Don't know why, just felt awfully sorry for him at the same time as annoyed that he didn't stick to social distancing rules...

we've had the same thing happen here. I've noticed a few of our neighbours attach notes to their front doors asking the delivery drivers to stay away from their front door as someone in the house has a chronic condition, but I think it might be worth putting up a note anyway

TrashPanda · 03/04/2020 12:22

We have had several deliveries, children's birthdays means others and sending them direct to us rather than giving them to us in person. We are in a flat and no driver would be able to be 2m away because of the size of the lobby bit. They've been leaving them outside our door and i shout thank you through it.

womaninatightspot · 03/04/2020 12:25

I had a parcel dropped off on the doorstep yesterday for a random neighbour, we're self isolating so I resorted to community email and left it outside the gate for her to collect.

Mumek · 03/04/2020 12:26

We've put a note on the door saying 'PLEASE LEAVE ALL DELIVERIES ON THE DOORSTEP' The delivery person just rings the bell and we acknowledge through the window. Appreciate it may be more difficult in a flat.

Permanantlypuzzled · 03/04/2020 12:26

or stop ordering things they don’t need
Now is not the time to order the boring things you need. You should have bought those In large amounts before lock down.
Now’s the time to buy the things you desire, the exciting things, the things that make you smile.😁😁😁

Mumto1girl3boys · 03/04/2020 12:32

or people could just stop ordering stuff they dont need

If they didnt need it they wouldnt have ordered it🤔

OlaEliza · 03/04/2020 12:32

They aren't staff. They are self employed for 30p a parcel. Feel sorry for them for that!

Our delivery people have been great and followed all the guidelines. They leave the parcel on the doorstep, ring the bell and go and stand right back along the driveway. I open the door, we wave to each other and they leave.

Today, a DPD person did ask me to take a parcel for a neighbour and I had to say no. How would I get it to them? I don’t want them coming round for things right now. Anyway, I’m sure they were in and just ignoring the door!

HT96 · 03/04/2020 12:41

Why do they need PPE? He should have put the package down knocked and walked away not handed you the package!

Our delivery people are back in their car by the time we open the door! That is how it should be done...

WeirdAndPissedOff · 03/04/2020 12:43

My DF has been complaining something rotten this past week about deliveries like these. He works as a subcontractor for Hermes (don't get me started on the cunts! Angry) - £7.50 per hour, 60 hours a week, and fined £300 for every parcel which arrives after the ETA. (Or every single parcel on Sunday when they very cleverly set their clocks back instead of forward!). It's a shitty job at the best of times, but his workload is now 2-3 times what it was a few weeks ago, and he's putting himself at risk to deliver rattan furniture, swingsets, hobby sets, playstations, paint & decorating equipment etc etc.
Though on the flipside if the orders weren't coming through then he'd have no income until he could get universal credit or grants in several months time.
(And I may be guilty of ordering myself a couple of Amazon items as well Blush)

Theflushedzebra · 03/04/2020 12:46

We've not had a problem with this at all - all our delivery drivers have left the parcel and stood well back.

I can't work out whether we should be ordering stuff or not tbh - on the one hand, we should be causing as little social contact as possible, but on the other - on the other - it's keeping delivery men in a job Confused

AprilFloundering · 03/04/2020 12:47

We've had a few deliveries here, primarily stuff so my DH can work at home successfully and some exercise stuff for the children. All have been done 'properly': box put down outside door, knock, they step back, we call thank you through the door, make sure they've moved away, open door and retrieve package, shouting thank you again.

Not that hard. We then wipe down the box.

Theflushedzebra · 03/04/2020 12:47

and fined £300 for every parcel which arrives after the ETA.

What? Is that a typo?

CallmeAngelina · 03/04/2020 12:49

I suppose that in some ways things must be a bit easier for them at the moment in that there is far less traffic on the roads and they are presumably spending less time trying to find a neighbour that's at home if you aren't. Most people are in, first time of knocking.

And they still have a paid income.

Bringringbring12 · 03/04/2020 12:50

@WeirdAndPissedOff

Your DH is getting £7.50 an hour? That is illegal unless your DH is aged between 18-20?

CallmeAngelina · 03/04/2020 12:51

I got an email the other day from someone - maybe Amazon? - saying they're suspending their "leave with a neighbour" option for the time being.

TheOrigBrave · 03/04/2020 12:52

he'd gone, sprayed the plastic all over and wiped it down, did the same with the inner package, wiped our front door which I'd touched then washed my hands.

Do you do this with literally every thing that comes into your home? Are you leaving the flat at all?
It sounds very hard work and very stressful.

JemSynergy · 03/04/2020 12:53

I've had a few deliveries ordered before the lock down, all have been delayed obviously and all have just been left in my storm porch in a discreet place - and my RM post lady has left any post needing signing for on the doorstep, knocked then walked back and has signed them for me. I agree that staff should be given PPE - even staff working in supermarkets don't seem to have been given any protection which just isn't fair on them at all.

Letsnotusemyname · 03/04/2020 12:57

Had a couple of kitchen worktops delivered today. I ordered them weeks ago.

Truck came, driver told me he couldn't take them inside - which I didn't expect and not a problem.

A minute later an unfamiliar car drew up. Truck driver said ‘he’s my mate, we’re hiring cars and he's here to give me a lift.’

They then proceeded to carry one top each to my path.

However bin men are travelling 3 to a truck.

inchoccyheaven · 03/04/2020 12:58

I have also have an amazon delivery handed to me despite having the note on door to say we are vunerable and to just leave parcels.
Also had a delivery of garden supplies this morning that the driver looked proud of himself for having read the note but was still stood about metre away so i had to step back more inside. He also passed me delivery note and pen to sign which stupidly i did. No awareness from him at all and I should have refused but was taken by surprise and just did it.

1forsorrow · 03/04/2020 13:01

I had a delivery, he left it on the doorstep, rang the bell and got back in his van. I nodded to him to let him know I'd got it. The sad thing is the order was for handcream and I just added face cream as I am getting low on that as using it for my hands. Got the face cream but the handcream is coming on the 5th May. My poor hands.

1forsorrow · 03/04/2020 13:03

God bless the bin men. Mine came yesterday, I was so happy to see them.

I won't open the door, I go to the window to see who it is and if they have anything for us I open the window and ask them to leave it on the doorstep.

We had some deliveries of things ordered before lock down and the Amazon guys were all keeping their distance but didn't have any PPE, but the delivery of meds from the chemist, the guy had gloves and mask, he knocked on the door, I went to window and he was standing at his van and shouted that the meds were on the doorstep.

And, yes, I put gloves on to pick the bag up, opened it in the back garden, tipped the items onto the table, threw the bag away, then sprayed the boxes, threw gloves away and washed hands. When the boxes were dry the go into the cupboard and aren't touched until needed.

If I were you @twinkletits99 I'd put a note on your door saying you don't accept parcels for neighbours.
