Should I give up delivery slots?

tactum · 03/04/2020 10:03

I have Tesco delivery slots for the next 2 weeks - 1 a week on Friday. We have been in total lockdown for 2.5 weeks as son had symptoms but didn't have it in the end (I think). Have literally been nowhere apart from garden. Both work from home. But no reason why we couldn't go to supermarket ourselves now.
AIBU to keep slots? I'm thinking....
a. will Tesco actually make this slot available to someone else or will it just get abandoned as they are overstretched?
b. surely it is better for us not to move anywhere for the next 2 weeks and risk getting it and spreading it? With these 2 deliveries coming we wouldn't need to move at all.
Am feeling a bit guilty about having a slot when no underlying needs. Please don't have a go at me, this is a genuine question and I am torn

Stay where you are and keep the slot. Ask neighbours if there is anything they need and add to the shop. Some Tesco deliveries are not turning up

Yellowbutterfly1 · 03/04/2020 10:40

Some will say keep them so that you are reducing the number of people in the supermarket which is a good thing, others will say you are selfish if you keep them as they should go to someone vulnerable.
Unfortunately you have no guarantee that it will go to somebody vulnerable.

Really only you can make the decision because you will receive too many conflicting answers on here.

SoupDragon · 03/04/2020 10:42

I would keep the slot and see if neighbours need anything (although this is tricky with item limits on some things)

SoupDragon · 03/04/2020 10:43

I agree.

Alsohuman · 03/04/2020 10:46

I’d keep the slot and see if I could shop for a vulnerable neighbour at the same time.

EffOrf · 03/04/2020 10:47

I had a delivery slot this week and have one for next week, I won’t bother after that, I did give up last weeks as I really didn’t need it, I am keeping next weeks though as it will save me a supermarket trip and there is no guarantee it will go to someone vulnerable.

So I would keep the ones you have OP but don’t book any more until slots are readily available

Rainbowqueeen · 03/04/2020 10:49

I’d keep there slots but wouldn’t book any more

selfisolatingsince2007 · 03/04/2020 10:54

Hubby has managed to shop at waitrose and sainsburys and it's been fine lately. Because they limit the amount of customers in store you may find that easier.

We gave up on ocado, waitrose and tesco!

mynameiscalypso · 03/04/2020 10:56

Well, you have no guarantee that someone vulnerable will get the slots. The only thing I would say though is that our Tesco this morning was both well organised and fully stocked (including flour/meat/pasta/loo roll/milk etc etc) and it was much less stressful than shopping last week.

MaltbyMaeve · 03/04/2020 10:57

Obviously keep the slots.

CherryBlossomPink · 03/04/2020 10:58

I have a weekly recurring slot on Sunday mornings which I am keeping. I am shopping for 3 households due to vulnerable family members so I take advantage of the NHS shopping hour on Saturday morning and use the delivery slot to mop up any gaps/restrictions where I can
I don’t feel any guilt at all and feel incredibly lucky I already had the recurring slot before this lockdown started.

Feawen · 03/04/2020 11:00

As above - we are keeping our delivery slots, but asking around our parents and neighbours if they need anything added.

Cloudhopping · 03/04/2020 11:00

Give it up. You don’t need it. My 80 year old mother has been unable to get a slot for the last 3 weeks. Yes you can’t guarantee that your slot will go to someone vulnerable but it is the right thing to do.

tactum · 03/04/2020 11:01

Thanks! I have rung my two neighbours - both vulnerable - as for today's delivery I had around 50 items so they have used the remaining 30. Makes sense

I cancelled a slot and it didn’t reappear for anyone to book, they’re over capacity as it is i think. I would just keep it!

Cloudhopping · 03/04/2020 11:05

I think some people on this thread are trying to justify not giving up their slots as there are no guarantees it’s going to someone vulnerable. This is just an excuse. On every supermarket website, we are being told to save it for someone more vulnerable. If we all did that, the slots would go to the people who need them most. Do the right thing people!

EffOrf · 03/04/2020 11:11

Yes, when I cancelled my slot it didn't seem to reappear either as I checked to see if it had

SoupDragon · 03/04/2020 11:12

I think some people are being smug virtue-signallers

vanillandhoney · 03/04/2020 11:15

We have a slot booked and we're not vulnerable, however we shop for our in-laws who are in their late seventies and most certainly are vulnerable.

They can't book their own delivery as they don't have internet so if they want food, they need to go out. We order enough for us and them and drop their bits off for them.

Looking at us, it looks like we're taking the piss getting deliveries and click + collect orders, but we're feeding other people as well as ourselves.

Cloudhopping · 03/04/2020 11:16

Soupdragon what? By answering the OP’s question?

Stefoscope · 03/04/2020 11:17

Really? I can't see anywhere it says this on the Morrisons website.

Cloudhopping · 03/04/2020 11:24

stefoscope It does on Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury’s. Don’t know about the rest.

flowersinaugust · 03/04/2020 11:28

I have been asked to isolate for 12 weeks as I'm in the vulnerable category. So is my disabled mother who I care for. Most of my neighbours are elderly and we dont have anyone close by to help us with food and there's no delivery slots available anywhere. If people who could go and shop safely in stores were doing so and leaving slots open for those who can't I might be less stressed over the prospect of either starving or having to risk my health (and my mother's) to go out myself. If I wasn't at risk I would definitely be choosing to shop in supermarkets physically over getting stuff delivered.
So what if you can't guarantee someone vulnerable will get it? You have no guarantee that it won't. It's still 1 less person trying to get a slot and 1 more available for those who are.

MaggieFS · 03/04/2020 11:33

Tesco are not prioritising elderly or vulnerable therefore your a lot could go to anyone. Better if you use it for your vulnerable neighbours.
