... Compared to same 12 days of the previous month (23rd - 3rd)? Not including the usual bills, subscriptions/direct debits and mortgage/rent, have you noticed a massive change your outgoings?

I am a self employed freelancer (as is DP) and we both rent, so definitely not an enviable position.
Between 22nd Feb and 3rd March, I just worked out that I alone spent roughly £384 on train tickets, clothes, coffees, online orders, meals out and takeaways. This same 12 days I have spent £78 (just food, essential office supplies and a cheeky lottery ticket), so that means my savings total up to about £306 in TWELVE days! I feel almost ashamed at how easily I would throw money away, and will definitely reflect on this whenever I go to buy something that I don't necessarily need in future.

It will be interesting to hear other peoples' savings stories!

Swings and roundabouts really as others have said.
We've spent a lot less on petrol, going out, DIY stuff, clothes, haircuts etc.
But are spending much more on grocery shopping, electricity and takeaways. Also had to buy extra homewares (desk, fold up bed etc) as eldest had to come home from university, so all in all I think our net saving is zero!!

northernmonkeys100 · 04/04/2020 20:19

Ok so far-
No tutors £70 pw
Sons school bus fares £30pw
Sons driving lessons £35 pw
No dog walker £30 pw
School lunches £15 pw
Costa coffee £20 pw
Pub visits £50 pw
Eating out £50 pw
No after school clubs £15 pw
Fuel savings £40 pw
SORN 1 car £10 pw

So about £365 a week or £1580 a month but lost £2000 a month in investment income so worse off in total.

OJZJ · 04/04/2020 20:22

Saved a good couple of hundred if not more tbh, no petrol (£90ish in last two weeks )as my son's school is the next village, no packed lunches, less food waste as not randomly going into shops to buys treats or eating at a cafe so wasting food we have at home (I am very guilty of that) no coffees at Costa, no after school clubs, roller disco, cinema trips etc,... the list is endless. I have unfortunately been using amazon more and feeling guilty for the poor guys delivering things as Amazon are buggers for sending each item out individually ie ordered 4 schooling sats books for my 7 yr old and each one delivered separately and one gone missing en route.... I am worried about lack of exercise as never one for moving much anyway but now in more pain as so paranoid about leaving the house and cant even use the garden as flaming inconsiderate neighbours having another smoky bbq_nightly party and fire pit that blows directly into our garden/house we are shut in with bloody windows closed from early afternoon onwards.... last one a bit of a whinge as sat with another smoke induced headache..... no you cannot reason with them

Losing money hand over fist.

Still working, and I have a 2 hour one-way commute, so used to stay with a family member. They are now shielding, so was doing a daily 4 hour commute with consequent petrol costs. Work are now housing me, so phew!

But son is back from university and eats like a horse.

I lived a frugal life before this, and had a very tight budget, that I easily kept within due to my few desires. Having my son here, and the petrol before work sorted me, is meaning my expenditure has massively risen. Worried.

Scorpio75kaz · 04/04/2020 20:42

Nothing. I’ve saved nothing. As I currently now have no income until the 80% comes into play, and now have to feed my family 3 meals a day instead of 2 😫🙈😂
If I was still getting paid, I’m pretty sure my money would be spent on copious amounts of wine and chocolate 😂🤣😂

Bargebill19 · 04/04/2020 20:43

Non. Still working and expenses just as a drop in fuel price has been replaced by an increase in food prices.

angelfacecuti75 · 04/04/2020 21:05

I have lost a about 1.1k because I have been laid off x

Ravenesque · 04/04/2020 21:08

I've saved nothing. I don't have to pay out for daily public transport and I don't drive. In fact, I have less money because I can't shop in the way I usually do and have found I have to spend more money to get what I need. I think if you're already quite poor and budget to live just about within your means this current situation makes that far harder and you find yourself living slightly outside your means because the only other alternative is cutting down on your usual essentials and essentials are pretty much, well, essential.

PinkPanther27 · 04/04/2020 21:28

About minus £550 per month.
Still working but not getting paid as much as not as much work available.
Food bill gone up massively as only the expensive products are left.

Taylia · 04/04/2020 21:29

probably about £150-200 a month but food bills have gone up massively

Serin · 04/04/2020 21:31

Driving lessons £50 per week per child and we have 2 kids learning so £400 a month.
Petrol about £100 so far.
Eating out, approx £300 a month.
Cafes £60 a month.
Entertainment £200
Garden centres £100.
I've just transferred a fair amount to the local hospice as it doesn't feel right to be "in profit" when so many are suffering.

youkiddingme · 04/04/2020 21:37

None, we didn't have much to spend on treats anyway. Essentials are now costing way more as we are having to buy what shopping we can get at what prices they want to charge. And we have less money coming in.

Poetryinaction · 04/04/2020 21:38

I bought a tablet for the kids but then I lost it

Mummyshark2019 · 04/04/2020 23:04

My food bills have gone up massively and so will the bills when they come in. Electric bill will be shocking.

Bunnylady54 · 04/04/2020 23:20

Neither of us are earning at the moment so we will struggle, although I have a fair amount of March’s wages left & we’ve had a UC advance. We rent out a house we lived in some years ago & luckily are still getting rent as the tenant is on benefits.
Not sure how much we’ve saved but really noticing the difference with only doing one shop a week & going to Aldi instead of Asda/Tesco. Barely using any petrol. No school dinners to pay for. No going out expenses but we went out very rarely anyway. No takeaways. Quit drinking wine & that was costing a small fortune! Not buying bits & pieces like scratchcards, magazines, bars of chocolate etc as not popping casually into shops. Home baking & cooking more from scratch.

Mayorquimby2 · 04/04/2020 23:24

Lost €12k to date 👍

Suppose I've saved €850 in creche fees

crankysaurus · 04/04/2020 23:28

We're about to get a hefty pay cut at work for the same hours and DH won't get anything for his loss in self employment work due to when he set up his business and it's seasonal nature. Not sure where this will leave us but hoping to still have jobs at the end of it. Other than that, currently saving £18 a week on bus fares.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 04/04/2020 23:29

I'm extremely lucky in that DH and I both have our jobs.

I'm saving...
£25 a week tutoring fee, £10 PE activity cost, the odd payday takeaway, costa a couple of times a month, school dinners for DD2, the odd school dinner for me when I've not got my salad made, or a meal deal at the shop on the way to work. Mostly I'm avoiding shops as much as possible (asthmatic but not severe enough to be on the shielding list) so no popping in to get 2 things and spending £20+. Trying also to limit online shopping a much as possible too.

Tunnocks34 · 04/04/2020 23:30

In two weeks, I’m a bit embarrassed to admit it because this is purely on eating out, and play gyms And fuel etc but £800. My food bill has increased by £75 a week though so I guess it evens at about £650

blue25 · 04/04/2020 23:35

About 1.5k a month.

No commuting costs, pub, meals out, gym, cinema, clothes shopping.

HeretoThereandBackAgain · 04/04/2020 23:37

Nothing yet - we’ve spent about $1000 on food which has been cooked up for the freezer. Groceries are a lot more expensive here than in the UK. We usually eat out 3-4 times a week and normally OH travels a lot for work and so has a lot of his meals covered by that.

Apart from fresh veggies, we don’t need any food for the next couple of months. I usually drive about 2500 miles a month so petrol costs have dropped drastically. I expect by the end of this month we’ll have saved about $1500.

LuluJakey1 · 04/04/2020 23:39

£682

LuluJakey1 · 04/04/2020 23:39

In 2 weeks

managedmis · 04/04/2020 23:57

$170 on monthly train ticket
Coffee a day at work, lunch once a week =$40
Before and after school club for DS - around $18 per day
Clothes shopping I usually do =$50 on average per week say

We've spent more on groceries but as pp's have said, none of the 'I cba cooking, let's have a $60 sushi meal for supper'

Been very tame in the crafts stuff for the kids - I probably spent $15 on stuff for them.

managedmis · 04/04/2020 23:59

Why are people saying they're spending more on washing?

^

Wondered the same. We're washing loads less.
