First world problem right now I know. Hard to explain but my hair hurts on the left side of my head. Has done for a good few weeks.
De google keeps mentioning alopecia and I am freaking as I am loosing so so much hair at the moment. I have thick hair so not noticeable but am worried about it.
Anyone else every have “sore hair”? Best way I can describe it

Didn’t enable voting not sure how that happened 😂

Is it your scalp or your hair that is hurting? I don’t see how anyone can have “sore hair”. You don’t feel anything with hair, it can’t be “sore”, you don’t even feel it when it’s cut off, if your scalp is sore that’s a different story and freaking out about it is not going to help matters, in fact, that just makes matters worse and will cause you to lose more hair.

Unfortunately you probably can’t go to your doctor due to certain events but otherwise I would have advised you to visit your GP. It sounds like you need a professional recommended shampoo/conditioner to stop your hair coming out.

Passthebubbly · 02/04/2020 00:20

Yeah it’s probably my scalp but they only way I can describe what I feel is that my hair hurts when I run my fingers through it. Very weird sensation that’s why I was wondering if anyone else would recognise my description of how it feels.

Ok as yeah, hair can’t hurt. Your fingers running through your hair must be connected to your scalp, probably the strands pulling against it and causing you pain on your head, much alike getting your hair pulled is pain connected to your scalp. It doesn’t ever hurt your hair, just your head.

LoveFameTragedy · 02/04/2020 00:25

Obj W suffered from alopecia areata and completely understand the sensation you describe. GP!

MKUltrachic · 02/04/2020 00:29

Maybe a GP can prescribe after a phone consultation

Passthebubbly · 02/04/2020 00:33

Thank you lovefametradgedy. I think if it’s something you haven’t had it’s hard to explain or understand. Along with how much hair I am loosing I am worried. It hurts to even attempt to pull my hair into a ponytail.
I won’t be bothering gp right now and just not touching my head and washing as little as possible. It’s one area over the left side of my scalp

Google traction alopecia. Is is relevant to you?

user1473878824 · 02/04/2020 02:29

OP this might sound like a very silly question but how often are you washing it? I get very greasy hair and if I’m unable to wash it for a few days (thank you, boiler!) I get the same sensation and then when I brush or wash it it feels like loads has fallen out.

Callimanco · 02/04/2020 07:10

My mum calls this "headsore" and I get it when I have had a ponytail too tight. It gets much better once you wash your hair. It's really not serious.

Ponoka7 · 02/04/2020 07:32

Callimanco, do you get a lot of hairloss with it?

OP, at the least start taking a hair supplement, it needs to have Biotin in. I take cheap one's. They have the same in as more expensive one's, but the tablets are bigger. My first hair loss was because I had an autoimmune condition (undiagnosed at the time), my hair came back. Now I've had post menopausal loss.

My Mum had what you described and went on to have scalp issues which needed a medicated shampoo.

It could be alopecia or a few other causes. Until you contact a GP keep your nutrition at an optimum level.

Ponoka7 · 02/04/2020 07:34

And actually it isn't a first world problem. In India women use nut oils on their eyebrows as well as hair. African women use natural oils. Different cultures use different natural remedies.

Hair is something you can't hide, it really affects your confidence.

fruitpastille · 02/04/2020 07:37

Mine wasn't sore but taking iron and vit d improved my hairloss. Worth a try?

SlipSlidin · 02/04/2020 07:41

My ds has alopecia and had similar symptoms to you. He would run his hands through his hair and it would “feel weird” and clumps would come out leaving significant bald patches. This was about a month before lockdown so I was able to buy supplements from Holland and Barrett, biotin, magnesium, zinc and keratin have all helped regrowth and Alpecin caffeine shampoo. He has now shaved his head and still has sparse patches but his hair is definitely growing again and it’s too short for him to pull more out.

He is at uni and though having a great time is clearly very stressed and this is how it’s manifesting.

I have a couple of friends with alopecia. They see a trichologist and get reflexology. Obviously you can’t get anything like that at the moment but hopefully it’s short term and will be cured.

It’s a horrible condition but it’s not going to destroy you. Take care x

SlipSlidin · 02/04/2020 07:43

Oh and definitely more iron as others have said, it’s linked to anemia.

SlipSlidin · 02/04/2020 07:44

Me again...Holland and Barrett delivers and have a great website.

Callimanco · 02/04/2020 08:15

Re reading my post it's a bit dismissive and that wasn't the intention. I meant to say - you can get a sore scalp from pulling the roots back too tightly. It is really sore - I had it a few days ago and it was waking my up through the night, trying to run fingers through the hair is super painful. IF it is this, there will be some hair loss because the roots have been pulled - but it's not necessarily alopecia. Does washing your hair and leaving it to dry naturally, fall where it wants and not thing it back help? If so, it might just be sore roots protesting at being tied back and if it's that, it's not serious.

It could possibly be something more significant of course, I know nothing about alopecia.

Callimanco · 02/04/2020 08:16

*tying it back, not thing.

vhs95 · 02/04/2020 08:57

I get 'sore' hair and I've had hair loss for 3 years (fortunately was very thick to start with). Mine is sore when I move it at the roots, changing the direction of it, so it is the scalp that's sore but moving the hair causes it! It is worse when it needs washing as have cut down to every 4/5 days now.

Bloatedandconfused · 02/04/2020 09:05

Are you stressed/depressed? Only asking because a few years ago I went through a horrible time and my mental health was at rock bottom. I lost a lot of weight over a really short period of time and I wasnt sleeping properly at all. My hair started to thin out and at times it felt like my scalp was burning on one side. My hair hasn't fully recovered but it's getting there. I take the supplements other people have suggested too.
Hope you can get some answers. Hair loss really affects your confidence.

NorthernBirdAtHeart · 02/04/2020 09:27

Yes I have this on and off and it’s the strangest sensation, like the roots of my hair are inflamed.
I’ve put mine down to the 4 bouts of surgery and countless steroid injections but it’s still coming out in clumps when I wash it and is noticeably thinner.
I’ll try those supplements PP suggested.
Totally get it OP

inwood · 02/04/2020 09:31

i gt this when im coming down with something.

Meera8 · 28/03/2021 22:46

I have exactly the same sensation around the same time April 2020. I still get it.

I have noticed it's towards my period time. I have gone into early menopause and am on HRT, but it's towards the end off the month when I get that sensation - stinging/ burning/ weird pulling sensation.

VestaTilley · 28/03/2021 23:03

Do contact your GP. Don’t put stuff off due to Covid; it could be serious.

I was losing hair before I was diagnosed with coeliac disease. I stopped eating gluten as a treatment for coeliac (well, there’s no treatment but it stops the damage to my guts) and my hair stopped falling out. Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disease - ask your GP to do a full blood count.

Meera8 · 29/03/2021 09:36

Thank you VestaTilley. I've had a celiac test, and that was negative. I've heard it can be wrong the first time and should be done 3 times for it to show a true picture. I think I might ask the GP to test again.

What were your symptoms for celiac ?
