Constant need to pee at night. Suggestions?

Midsommar · 01/04/2020 00:24

...however please do not suggest it is pregnancy - I am absolutely not pregnant and not TTC.

I am going out of my mind with this. Every night when I get in bed I feel desperate for a wee. So I get up, use the loo, get back in bed. A few minutes tick by. I need to go again but this time it is barely a trickle. Get back in bed, five minutes later I feel the need to go. This can happen several times in the evening before I finally go to sleep.

It is driving me insane but I do not want to bug the doctors, what with all this COVID 19 going on.

Has anyone experienced this? As I said, I am not pregnant and do not have children. I'm a pretty fit and healthy woman of 31, no health issues and a decent diet.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Snap. Dont want to worry you but in my case...not necessarily yours...it was type 2 diabetes. Try cutting back on the sugar and see if that helps. Mine is diet controlled and I dont pee as much now that I'm a sugarfree zone!

MissMarks · 01/04/2020 00:34

Was just going to say diabetes

Northernsoullover · 01/04/2020 00:35

Yes I did up until quite recently. I had a urine test which was clear. I was supposed to go back and have a chat but of course with all that is happening now I can't.
Avoiding fluids didn't help either because like you say it was just a trickle anyway.
The nurse did say it sounded like an overactive bladder. So I did my Dr Google and it suggested: Avoiding caffeine, and retraining your bladder. So in the day if I felt the urge to urinate I'd hold on for as long as possible.
For the last 6 weeks I have slept right through until around 6.30 am.
If you Google overactive bladder you will see suggestions from reputable sources on how you can try and improve it. However, please please please do phone your GP for professional advice or investigation. I have given you these tips as something you can do while waiting for professional advice.

Urine infection? Are you drinking enough water during the day? You could try to drink a fair bit of water during the day to flush your bladder. Avoid alcohol and caffeine. See if it’s better, then if not I’d contact doctor. Don’t ignore it.

MerryGrinchmas1 · 01/04/2020 00:50

Do you drink lots of caffeine? A family member of mine has recently had tests as they suspected diabetes but they found out it was an adverse reaction to caffeine. Have stopped going in the night altogether now

whiplashy · 01/04/2020 01:01

this was one of my sister’s signs of type 1 diabetes (diagnosed in adulthood)

GrumpyHoonMain · 01/04/2020 01:04

Could be a sign of high blood pressure too

Tolleshunt · 01/04/2020 01:05

All of the above suggestions should be checked out, but this could be you being in a cycle of being anxious and now having set up a habit.

Anxiety causes us to pee more, and then I’d you get anxious or annoyed about needing to get up in the night to pee, start expecting it, tensing up, etc, it can perpetuate the cycle. Could it be that?

LightDrizzle · 01/04/2020 01:07

Is it the same during the day? Don’t ignore it.

Apollo440 · 01/04/2020 01:50

Get tested for diabetes.

RAOK · 01/04/2020 01:52

Anxiety?

RAOK · 01/04/2020 01:53

Tolleshunt that’s exactly the same for me.

ursuslemonade · 01/04/2020 02:47

How long has this been going on?
If not diabetes, could it be an overactive bladder?
Or an incomplete emptying?

I suffer from the last one, caffeine, citrus, tomato make it worse.
Try double voiding, it could make a difference.
Basically after weeing, get up, move about a specific way then try going again.
Turns out I've retained about 250 ml urine after first going.

Phythisisa · 02/09/2020 15:12

If diabetes is ruled out, it could be due to caffeine intolerance as others have said. Try completely cutting it out, total 0% caffeine teas and coffees are available and switch to decaff Cola or out carbonated drinks and alcohol altogether. I personally do wee a lot at night and in my case it is due to my bladder position, but you need to sit a bit longer to completely empty your bladder, as you must be retaining some urine which if it is not totally eliminated, could be becoming infected. ( look at what was said by ursuslemonade about double voiding ) Your symptoms really do need investigation and normally you would be referred to Women’s Health for some expert advice.

PoxyPixie · 02/09/2020 15:18

I have this alongside urgency issues during the day and my GP has said it’s overactive bladder syndrome. I use bladder training techniques and medication to control it but night time is still a big problem for me. I think it’s something to do with laying down that makes it worse at night. Don’t worry about bothering your doctor if it’s something that’s bothering you, there are other issues that might need ruling out such as diabetes, as has been mentioned.

Dowermouse · 02/09/2020 15:28

I have the same.
I've been kicked off the Continence Pathway because my ds breastfeeds and they won't prescribe medication which is the next step ( it's safe to breastfeed on according to Breastfeeding Network). I'm so fucked off, I went through months of imput/output reports, bloody uncomfortable bladder retraining, the nurse loudly counting with her fingers in my chuff while I proved I have pelvic tone- too good for her clinic apparently and estrogen suppositories that gave me 3 weeks of focal migraines I was unable to speak coherently....
My hunch is it's related to surgical adhesions from csections as it's positional, mostly when I lie down. I can make myself ignore it sometimes, but then ping awake needing the loo.
I hope you find a solution OP, it's sooo frustrating.

MereDintofPandiculation · 02/09/2020 16:52

Try a fortnight of no caffeine, alcohol or chocolate and see if it has an effect.

If it's only a trickle, wear a pad, and then tell yourself you don't need to go because the pad will hold it, and gradually get used to not hopping out of bed every time you feel a twinge.

makingmammaries · 02/09/2020 19:48

Cystitis?

AramintaLee · 02/09/2020 19:54

Could it be psychological? Like I once got it into my head that I had an overactive bladder after a friend suggested it. I then ended up constantly thinking about peeing which made me need to pee all the time (but not being able to)

I spent a few days distracting myself from those thought and not peeing when I felt like I needed to (I rationalised that there was no way any pee would come out as I hardly drank) and before long, it all sorted itself out.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 02/09/2020 20:09

I've had this on and off for years due to endometriosis and its linked to my cycle. Now I'm in peri menopause it's got worse.

Pukkatea · 03/09/2020 08:25

Is it an actual feeling of being desperate, or is it more 'do I need to pee?' and then suddenly you feel like you do? I get the latter and it's anxiety related, I don't actually need to pee more than usual I just can't sleep unless I feel like I've totally emptied my bladder.

Weenurse · 03/09/2020 08:31

All good suggestions.
Diabetes check and BP check.
Double voiding before bed.
Avoiding tea, coffee, alcohol, juice and fizzy drinks.
Avoiding spicy foods, tomato and chocolate.
If continues look at a urodynamics study to diagnose over active bladder or other issues.
Good luck

Jarstastic · 03/09/2020 12:40

Could be fibroids if you have one pushing on your bladder.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 03/09/2020 12:43

As PPs say, talk to your GP/whomever about overactive bladder or nocturia and ruling out other causes such as new-onset diabetes 1.5 or 2, an assortment of conditions.

Spinakker · 03/09/2020 12:44

I've had this problem before. For me I've linked it with taking my birth control pill (Yasmin) I was on in the evening before bed. I discovered it was a diuretic ! Also when I had the copper coil I felt more urgency to urinate as well. It could be something as simple as this. I'm alot better now I don't use these forms of contraceptions. Also check you aren't eating or drinking any diuretic food or drink at night time. Good luck. I know what a pain this can be !
