Never had one before. I'm scared of the procedure and I'm scared that they'll find what they're looking for :(

Handhold anyone?

hand hold and wishing you the best of results

cindyhove · 31/03/2020 14:23

I had one a few weeks ago. You’ll be sedated and won’t know anything about it.
Good lucj

MichaelBoobins · 31/03/2020 14:24

I’ve had quite a few and they’re a bit uncomfortable but they don’t take long. Please don’t worry, just because they’ve found abnormal cells doesn’t mean it’s anything sinister! I had high grade severe cells and I was scared but they zapped them away before they could turn into cancer! That’s why we have these procedures to catch anything early and prevent it. You’ll be fine Smile

LittleRa · 31/03/2020 14:24

I’ve had one and it was fine, just like a bit of a longer smear. @cindyhove I was not sedated, and didn’t think people were?

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 31/03/2020 14:25

I had a colposcopy a couple of years ago. It was very simple/straightforward and not as uncomfortable as a smear test. Lying on your back with your feet in stirrups is nobody's idea of fun but apart from the indignity it was trouble free.

JennysTailor · 31/03/2020 14:28

It's not a pleasant experience but you will get through it. The waiting for results was much more scary for me, like PP I needed cells zapped and every smear afterwards has been fine. I wasn't sedated either.

quarantinevibes · 31/03/2020 14:33

I hope everything goes well, sending you a hand hold Flowers

SeaGale · 31/03/2020 14:41

Thanks everyone, it's appreciated.

I'm not expecting sedation?!

Smear tests don't bother me in the slightest, I never feel anything, so I'm hoping I might escape lightly??

Hope it's been done by now and wasn't as bad as you feared.
You are allowed to spoil yourself later and overindulge on sugar and/or cocoa depending on your need. Chocolate

SeaGale · 31/03/2020 14:42

Nope, I'm in the waiting room.....

You've done the hard bit already. The prep is the worst bit. Good luck OP, it doesn't last ages.

Tink88 · 31/03/2020 14:44

You will be fine mine lasted a little longer than a smear but was actually more comfortable. I wasn't sedated at all I wouldn't think you would need to be. I had a lletz (?) procedure following the results and that was also ok and done without sedation. Honestly it's fine

Pavlova31 · 31/03/2020 14:44

I hope all goes well for you too SeaGale Flowers

Bluetrews25 · 31/03/2020 14:45

Oh, ok, clearly not done yet!
Hand hold from me too. It always helps to know others are thinking of you.
Hope they have a handholding nurse for you. Worth their weight in gold, they are.

KatySun · 31/03/2020 14:45

I was not sedated.
I have had two - one with a biopsy followed by lletz treatment, one which was just a look and all clear given six months after the first.
The nurse kept my attention; she talked to me all the way through whilst the consultant was doing the colposcopy.
I hope you will be fine.

AngeloMysterioso · 31/03/2020 14:45

I’ve had about 5, including 2 whilst I was pregnant. They’re not so bad, really.

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 31/03/2020 14:45

Had one a few years ago (actually 10 years, now I think about it!!) and it was a bit scary, but ultimately fine. I was a bit shaken at the abnormal cells (because I was so sure they were going to have a quick look and say it was all fine!) but glad I had it done- had the all clear since.

Hope it all goes well

Wynston · 31/03/2020 14:45

Hand hold x

Dontknownow86 · 31/03/2020 14:47

There's a bit of a pinch / shock and that's about it. Expect some odd silver discharge after. I had to have a follow up lletz too and that wasn't horrendous either although I was a bit annoyed that it appears that the colposcopy got all the cells and there was nothing in the lletz! The thought was worse than it was.

CoconutQueen · 31/03/2020 14:47

No one is sedated for a colposcopy, don't worry. No idea why someone thought that. Good luck, it really is just like a long smear test. You will be ok. Smile

Amotherof6 · 31/03/2020 14:48

Good luck.... wishing an all clear for you

MillicentMartha · 31/03/2020 14:48

I had one a few years ago, followed by Letz (?) at the next appointment. It was fine. The first appointment was similar to a smear but the person doing it was very experienced and it wasn’t painful. The Letz was a bit stingy and I needed a sanitary pad after. This was 20 years ago, no recurrence as yet. 😊

SeaViewBliss · 31/03/2020 14:49

Hand hold here - I had one about 6 months ago. It wasn't anything like I thought it was going to be - they're very kind and monitor your discomfort really carefully.

For me the worst bit was the wind on the ward afterwards, especially as a nurse kept walking by and saying 'let it out, we've heard it all before'!!

Hope it went well.
