Asda charging for delivery.

Hear me out.

I pay for a delivery pass monthly. It's £5 and I have a regular delivery slot.

I'm lucky to have kept this and with a disabled child and 2 shielding parents it's going to be a godsend.

So I placed my order.

Just had an email.

2 items out of stock.
No substitutes offered.
Some items on a multi buy saving.

So now I'm under the minimum basket charge and they've charged me £3 for delivery.
I get usually this is the rules and understand why.

But AIBU to think when people can't even get their usual weekly grocery shopping trolley they shouldn't then charge for delivery because it goes under a certain amount - for a period of say 3 months during this lockdown.

I do think the order itself should remain at minimum basket amount. But customers shouldn't have to pay extra because they can't deliver what was ordered or substitute it.

I couldn't get worked up about it.

How regular is your slot? What is the minimum charge? Cancel some slots and do a bigger shop?

itsgettingweird · 31/03/2020 11:53

My slot is weekly. Can't cancel reoccurring slot as I'll lose it.

But I do worry. I pay £5 a month. If they do this every week then I'm charged £3 a week so an extra £12/15 a month on top of my fiver.

I won't make a fuss right now but people haven't exactly got money to throw away at the same thing twice atm. But I want to know IABU because if not I'll email when this is over and complain and point out my charges and hopefully they'll refund.

OP posts:
itsgettingweird · 31/03/2020 11:54

And £12-15 is a lot of money on toP of food as we are only a family of 2.

I would be concerned about this. I would email, and hope that at some point, when this madness is all over, it gets sorted out. Hopefully the next shop will be better and go over the minimum spend.

Geminijes · 31/03/2020 11:58

Couldn't you just order a few extra items to compensate for any that will be out of stock so you will still be over the minimum free delivery amount?
If all of the order is then available you could hand the extra items back to driver for a refund although I would just keep them.

LouiseTrees · 31/03/2020 11:58

It’s 2 McDonald’s full adult meals a month. Unless you are really hard up I wouldn’t get to worked up about it.

IndecentFeminist · 31/03/2020 11:58

Can you not add some stuff?

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 31/03/2020 12:00

It will be a computer not a person. The supermarkets are working flat out. Let it go

crustycrab · 31/03/2020 12:01

No, they're out of order.

If you've a delivery pass and they couldn't deliver what you'd ordered they should have waived the charge

itsgettingweird · 31/03/2020 12:02

Louise regardless of what it equates to its paying twice for the same thing because they can't deliver items that were in stock when I ordered them. £12-15 is definitely more to someone like me than a multi million pound company like Asda!

That's a good idea about ordering and returning items I don't want. I need to check that though because I heard elsewhere they weren't accepting returns and if you accept substitutes with an order you have to take them.

I get for some people a whole weeks worth of shopping paid out extra over the 3 months won't be a lot. But for others it is.

OP posts:
itsgettingweird · 31/03/2020 12:07

Gawd - I've also noticed they've then charged me another £3 for pick and pack. So I've paid £6 for this delivery (more than my months pass).

I'll let it go this week but I'm certainly keeping an eye and won't be paying an extra £25 a month because their stock is low.
They aren't exactly struggling to make money themselves atm. Supermarket sales are up billions in the past month,

In the current climate, when we know there will be items out of stock, it's even more important to check your order at least the day before delivery so you can find alternatives for missing items etc and ensure you are over the supermarket's limit. Tesco charges £4 on orders below £40 and not sure for Waitrose but I know they require a minimum order of £60 or over.

Crunchymum · 31/03/2020 13:02

I don't expect people to put up and shut up but in this current situation, having a regular delivery slot is a very enviable position.

We have one slot due to shielding / being in vulnerable group but beyond that I don't know yet (delivery isn't until later in the week so I assume once that arrives more slots open? but I don't know and couldn't book repeat slots)

Can you not just make sure your order isn't too close to the cost that tips you into delivery charges.

Under £40 is the limit for Sainsburys so I will make sure we don't order just £42 worth of stuff in case we have missing items and go under the £40?

RelapsedChocoholic · 31/03/2020 13:12

YANBU - if your order value drops due to their (understandable, but also likely atm) inability to fulfil all the items, they should not charge you imo.

I’d imagine adding the charge is an automated process, so I’d definitely complain.
It may well just be no one has thought to request a change to the system, and until they get complaints it will continue to be missed.

They also may still be doing this intentionally, so unless they receive a significant number of complaints they won’t review their decision.

EffOrf · 31/03/2020 13:15

I think if you go under the £40 with Tesco because stuff is not in they don’t charge you. They didn’t use to anyway

Wattagoose90 · 31/03/2020 13:16

They're usually quite good with their customer service. I think if you contacted them they'd be likely to refund the charges.

byebyebeautiful · 31/03/2020 13:19

Consider it a sacrifice to the shopping gods, you are bloody lucky to have a delivery slot at all and £3 is nothing in the scheme of things. YABU sorry.

Dyrne · 31/03/2020 13:23

I think it’s a bit off to go on social media and slate them without giving them an opportunity to put it right. Call Customer Services and I’m sure you’ll get it refunded. It’s not like there was an evil person on the end of the line giggling maniacally as they charged you, it would have been an automated thing.

FamBae · 31/03/2020 13:25

Could you not ask your neighbours if they need anything, I'm sure they would extremely grateful.

MrsGrindah · 31/03/2020 13:27

If you and everyone else affected don’t let them know they can’t really address it. It’s probably not intentional so send a polite email or call them rather than seethe in silence.

Jessikka · 31/03/2020 13:30

You can add things onto your shop until the night before.
I too have a delivery pass and have had things cancelled because of being out of stock, however i just added something back on to get back to £40.

Can you not do this?

playthestation · 31/03/2020 13:33

YANBU you should not be charged for going under. You should be able to add to it though surely to bring it back up? Or is this email being sent at the point of picking?

PilatesPeach · 31/03/2020 13:36

I have had this - ordered over £40 and agreed to subs but when order came it was under £40 and some items were missing and not substituted - not keen to have to order say £45 or £50 of stuff some of which I don't really want just to try and ensure that at least £40 is delivered - you have till midnight to amend but you don't find out what is arriving until a few hours beforehand eg 11am email for a 3pm delivery so you cannot add anything as it is too late to amend. To be fair though this happened before current situation as am not vulnerable so do my own shop.

PeterPanGoesWrong · 31/03/2020 13:37

Jeeez, just add a couple of items to your order.

You’re shopping for you, your disabled child and two vulnerable parents and you can’t add enough to your order to bring it to the minimum amount?

I shitting despair at some people!!

Like a good moan do ya op?

brownandpurple · 31/03/2020 13:41

Why not just message them and ask for a refund?
