Attached image floating around social media.

Clearly those experiencing domestic violence are in a hideous situation, but for most people we are so so lucky that we can sit at home right now. No bombs dropping, the country want to save us, they're just struggling. We can use soap and water. Poverty here is horrific but not to the scale of India.

AIBU: This is the worst thing to happen to our country in a century, I could never feel proviledged.

YANBU: This is the worst thing to happen to our country in a century and yet most of us can sit in our homes keeping safe. I feel privileged.

I totally agree. Going to the shops is a pain, but we know that we can buy enough food to not go hungry and we know in a few months time that our currency will still buy us enough food, so we won't starve, coupled with health care, we aren't doing so bad.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 31/03/2020 11:41

In a way - I can see his point. But someone else having it worse doesn't mean you're not allowed to feel unhappy with your own life, and berating people deemed "privileged" doesn't really add anything positive to the current situation.

www.dosomething.org/us/facts/11-facts-about-global-poverty
Nearly 1/2 of the world’s population — more than 3 billion people — live on less than $2.50 a day. More than 1.3 billion live in extreme poverty — less than $1.25 a day.[1]
1 billion children worldwide are living in poverty. According to UNICEF, 22,000 children die each day due to poverty.[2]
805 million people worldwide do not have enough food to eat. Food banks are especially important in providing food for people that can’t afford it themselves. Run a food drive outside your local grocery store so people in your community have enough to eat. Sign up for Supermarket Stakeout.[3]
More than 750 million people lack adequate access to clean drinking water. Diarrhea caused by inadequate drinking water, sanitation, and hand hygiene kills an estimated 842,000 people every year globally, or approximately 2,300 people per day.[4]
In 2011, 165 million children under the age 5 were stunted (reduced rate of growth and development) due to chronic malnutrition.[5]
Preventable diseases like diarrhea and pneumonia take the lives of 2 million children a year who are too poor to afford proper treatment.[6]
As of 2013, 21.8 million children under 1 year of age worldwide had not received the three recommended doses of vaccine against diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis.[7]
1/4 of all humans live without electricity — approximately 1.6 billion people.[8]
80% of the world population lives on less than $10 a day.[9]
Oxfam estimates that it would take $60 billion annually to end extreme global poverty--that's less than 1/4 the income of the top 100 richest billionaires.[10]
The World Food Programme says, “The poor are hungry and their hunger traps them in poverty.” Hunger is the number one cause of death in the world, killing more than HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis combined.[11]

I have never ever taken for granted how lucky I am, especially now.
Friends who have felt sorry for me previously because I live in social housing, 1bed flat alone and I don't own my own property, can now rest assured that I have what everyone should want and never take for granted - security. Coupled with free health care (so many idiots still don't get this), free education and a welfare system.
It's embarrassing that people aren't aware of their privilege in the world. Or maybe I just need smarter friends.
I have always been super aware of how lucky I am, just by sheer accident of birth place.

GrumpyHoonMain · 31/03/2020 12:16

There are people in India who can’t isolate due to shared toilets or not having a home or living with twelve people in a one room apartment so someone has to go out otherwise everyone would lose the plot. People in South Korea or Japan or China who can’t as their apartment doesn’t have a kitchen so they have to go out for food. It’s all quite awful.

Wewearpinkonwednesdays · 31/03/2020 12:20

Well that's hardly a shocking revelation.

whereissky · 31/03/2020 12:29

@GrumpyHoonMain

I agree on India and China. But S.Korea and Japan are as wealthy as us and have been very successful in social distancing and managing this situation better than we are. I don't know where your theory of the Koreans and Japanese not having kitchens in their apartments....

Iflyaway · 31/03/2020 12:40

We are privileged indeed.

I was saddened to read about this:

www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/30/indian-doctors-being-evicted-from-homes-over-coronavirus-fears

GabsAlot · 31/03/2020 12:42

i agree we're lucky all these millenials moaning on twitter how they want to go and some of them do because noone tells them what to do-ok then sign a form saying you wont take a ventalitor

its staying at home not fucking chinese water toture

GrumpyHoonMain · 31/03/2020 12:49

Who says South Korea is wealthy? Much of it’s population is poor and there is a lot of inequality which is why the state has to intervene so harshly. Goshiwons / Goshitels are fairly common. Some share a tiny (often microwave / sink only) kitchen and bathroom with 50 people / families. Others have no kitchen at all. Poverty amongst the elderly is even greater and many live in communes without even basic facilities.

Zilla1 · 31/03/2020 12:51

I agree with the sentiment OP, but the 'worst thing to happen to our country in a century'?

I'm not sure about the figures so happy to have them wrong but but c400,000 serving British died, c100,000 civilians died (this feels low to me) and c3.5m army were mobilised, presumably many abroad and faced death. c1.5m children and their teachers were evacuated (imagine what MN would be like given the MN reaction that Y11 and Y13 have not been able to sit their exams) and people lived for years with the worry every night of having a bomb dropped on their heads and their loved ones being bombed or dying fighting abroad.

Now I'm not minimising the worry from COVID, especially if shielding or at risk and the worry to businesses, SE, employees and everyone and I'm particularly conscious that lies and deficiencies of PPE will lead to HCPs dying before their time.

MintyMabel · 31/03/2020 12:51

Living in the western world, in any country nor facing war or famine or water shortages is a privilege at any time.

GabsAlot · 31/03/2020 12:52

i dont know how s korea have managed it maybe all th ramped up testing they have?

GrumpyHoonMain · 31/03/2020 12:52

In Japan budget apartments don’t come with a cooking space. Many people just eat out and bung a microwave somewhere in their tiny homes.

MintyMabel · 31/03/2020 12:53

i agree we're lucky all these millenials moaning

There are people in all generations moaning about staying in and flouting the rules.

It has fuck all to do with millennials.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 31/03/2020 12:56

Sorry I don’t find this particularly helpful. Of course if we think about the poorest nations and those in civil wars we are blessed. But why can’t we just take a moment to feel sorry for those suffering here, it’s not on the same scale. But in 2020 UK it is shocking what is happening, how many people are losing their jobs, their livelihoods!

SharonasCorona · 31/03/2020 12:57

I totally agree, OP. I’m at home, working at less then my usual capacity but earning 100% wage. I can’t imagine what it’s like in developing countries where medical care is a privilege not a right and people will be struggling to feed their families.

I notice charities are having CV emergency appeals, I will be donating.

SonjaMorgan · 31/03/2020 13:08

@GabsAlot oh do shut up making this a generational issue. Lots of elderly have completely ignored the guidelines. And how old do you think us millennials are?

I think graditude makes people happy. I am happy my family are safe and we have enough food (even if there are a few weird combos going on). We are watching films, spending time in the garden and trying to make the most of this.

Genderwitched · 31/03/2020 13:19

Completely agree OP. We are incredibly privileged in this country, I can't even begin to imagine how it would be to live in the poorest parts of the world. The whinging and moaning from some in this country has been shocking.

Genderwitched · 31/03/2020 13:22

I don't agree that this is the worst thing that has happened to our country in a century though.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 31/03/2020 13:24

The whinging and moaning from some in this country has been shocking do you think people who’ve lost their jobs with bills and children to pay for are whining?

Dyrne · 31/03/2020 13:27

Presumably you never moan about anything ever then OP? You should always be grateful even if something shitty happens to you because someone always has it worse.

StanStreeson · 31/03/2020 13:29

Remember to socially self-distance and remain at least one meter away from all mirrors.

Genderwitched · 31/03/2020 13:29

do you think people who’ve lost their jobs with bills and children to pay for are whining?

No, that's why I said "some".

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 31/03/2020 13:30

Just because someone has it worse, it doesn’t mean you can’t be sad or moan about the situation you are in.

My best friend is currently fighting cancer, is she not allowed to moan about her struggle, the fact she might die and leave her dc because someone died today? I mean the dead person is worse off right.
