Attached image floating around social media.

Clearly those experiencing domestic violence are in a hideous situation, but for most people we are so so lucky that we can sit at home right now. No bombs dropping, the country want to save us, they're just struggling. We can use soap and water. Poverty here is horrific but not to the scale of India.

AIBU: This is the worst thing to happen to our country in a century, I could never feel proviledged.

YANBU: This is the worst thing to happen to our country in a century and yet most of us can sit in our homes keeping safe. I feel privileged.

I said millennial because they're the ones I've seen moaning the most and it's all about going out trivial things. or shall I call them noughties

YetAnotherSpartacus · 31/03/2020 13:48

Yeah. I voted YANBU but the blitz was far worse!

SewItGoes · 31/03/2020 14:08

YABU simply because this isn't the worst thing to have happened in the last century, by a long shot.

There's always someone who has it worse. It's good to keep things in perspective and appreciate all the ways we are fortunate, but it's also permissible to worry and be unhappy about things in your life.

Aside from everything else, there are so many people in wealthy countries who aren't able to isolate, due to the nature of their work, and some who are isolating would rather not, since it's costing them money they can ill afford to lose.

It's a complicated situation. The people who would most benefit from a little perspective are probably the ones who'll refuse to consider the terrible conditions in certain other countries (or even those in their own backyard).

I know. The pictures from India have had me in tears. Those poor people.

Queenunikitty · 31/03/2020 14:28

There a many, many dollar millionaires in India, they should look at making theirs a more equal society. And the ‘rich people’ who spread the virus? Chinese tourists flooding into Europe wearing head to toe Burberry and LV with their Rimowa Luggage who 20 years ago were also living in abject poverty. Sorry but I won’t check my ‘western privilege’ on this one thanks. Not to mention the billions of dollars Africans are hiding offshore and spending at the Mall of the Emirates. Distilling this global health crisis down into the ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’ is wrong IMHO. It’s a global issue affecting us all right now.

What Queen said.

PlanDeRaccordement · 31/03/2020 14:43

YABU this is not the worst thing to happen to the U.K. in a century.

And lecturing people on their (assumed) relative privilege compared to (assumed) others in less affluent nations is not helpful.

A poor person in the U.K. suffers just as much as a poor person in India.

avrilpoissons · 31/03/2020 14:53

I didn't vote for either option because this is not the worst thing, look at the civil war there has been in the former eastern bloc countries and the problems in some African countries. It's not good but it could be a heck of a lot worse. World War II was in the last 100 years and this doesn't come close to that.

pippong · 31/03/2020 14:57

Yes. There was something about a refugee camp in Lesbos this morning. They were talking about how the vulnerable could be taken in by neighbouring countries as the sanitary conditions are so poor.

MintyMabel · 31/03/2020 15:18

their (assumed) relative privilege compared to (assumed) others in less affluent nations

Why don't people understand what privilege means?

It doesn't mean you are doing well and have nothing to worry about, it means compared to others you have an advantage.

A poor person living in the UK does not have an easy life. But they do have free access to healthcare, clean water and a welfare system which although is flawed, does give something.

I'm not a fan of counting blessings or being thankful there are people worse off than you as it doesn't help you with your immediate problem, but it is not correct to suggest that being born in a first world nation doesn't come with an inherent privilege.

Thank you for posting this, it’s just the sense of perspective I needed today.
