If Old and Vulnerable are prioritised...

...what the fuck is everyone else supposed to do?

Ocado - prioritising elderly and vulnerable
Waitrose - prioritising elderly and vulnerable
Sainsburys - prioritising elderly and vulnerable
Iceland - prioritising elderly and vulnerable
Morrisons - can't tell as 19014 in the queue trying to get in.

Prioritising the elderly and vulnerable is great, obviously, but it doesn't actually work if you don't have capacity to serve anyone else. Because then it's not prioritising! It's saying "We will not serve you if you are not elderly or vulnerable".

And surprise, surprise, people who aren't vulnerable still need to eat.

So I cannot get anything from any supermarket either delivered or to collect (and I've expanded my search area to 8 miles from my house, nothing). And my local co-op is stripped bare of literally everything except milk, chocolate biscuits and aunt Bessie's frozen yorkshire puds. What good is that, to anyone?

Well then I assume you are neither elderly or vulnerable (do not disabled etc) what you do is... you get dressed, get your bag, open the door and walk out (make sure you hit it behind you) and then you either drive, walk or get public transport to your nearest supermarket and do your shopping like everyone else Confused

Minesacider · 31/03/2020 08:51

It's an hour in the morning a few times a week here, are they doing that throughout the day where you live? That doesn't seen sensible.

MonsteraCheeseplant · 31/03/2020 08:57

You're talking about delivery slots. The convenience of delivery for you is crucial to other people who need it more. Get over yourself.

PenisBeakerDipper · 31/03/2020 08:59

Here it’s only an hour in the morning at all of them, the rest are just letting people in the queue in one by one as people leave.

TabbyMumz · 31/03/2020 08:59

Drive to your local supermarket, or get the bus there, or walk. Most Supermarkets are pretty well stocked now.

Suniscomingout · 31/03/2020 09:01

The elderly and vulnerable can"t all get delivery slots either.

MissMarks · 31/03/2020 09:01

You do what everyone else does and go to the physical shop.

BerryCatHolly · 31/03/2020 09:04

I saw an influencer online complaining like this. She is in her twenties and was annoyed she couldn't get a supermarket delivery slot. She hadn't mentioned she was vulnerable or in ill health. I was baffled and couldn't understand why she expected one, when she could have gone to the supermarket herself (taking the right social distancing precautions of course). She quoted that Boris had told us we 'had' to get online food shops. I just wonder whether many people have misunderstood that its elderly, vulnerable and those with symptoms that need the online food slots ? It doesnt help that influencers online are peddling this mis information either.

Whatsmyname26 · 31/03/2020 09:06

I agree. In my house there are 3 members who are autistic and one with chronic health issues including chronic pain and pots (a condition that makes is hard to stand in ques!). We are not classed as vulnerable in this sense as we wouldn’t be high risk to corona but going to the supermarket feels like an insurmountable challenge right now. The people on high risk groups are getting emergency supplies delivered, prioritised by the community and prioritised by supermarkets which is 100% the right thing to do but that doesn’t mean the rest of us who have always shopped online suddenly don’t exist. I’m not sure what the solution is but I do think it shouldn’t be this hard

Roweeeeena · 31/03/2020 09:06

Go shopping...

Mlou32 · 31/03/2020 09:07

Well, what everyone else is supposed to do is take their wee leggies for a walk through the doors of Tesco/Asda/Sainsburys and buy their shopping. Deary me.

dontdisturbmenow · 31/03/2020 09:09

Indeed, vulnerable people can't get slots either, so they end up going to the shops and putting themselves much more at risk. You think that you should get a delivery whilst they don't?

SylvanianFrenemies · 31/03/2020 09:09

Try other sources of delivery. Round here, catering suppliers have switched to providing deliveries of meat, fish, eggs, milk, veg and bread. Info on local Covid-19 facebook groups, or direct from suppliers.

tingzhenqi · 31/03/2020 09:09

I get your point op. But if they are really supporting people in desperate I think that's the right thing.
ps. Morrisons is also doing awful atm... ( except the food box which is a good idea) Will call & cancel my annual pass the first thing after all this.

maddening · 31/03/2020 09:10

I have found everything at shops every time I went since this started apart from the key stocking items pasta, loo roll, long life milk, flour, kidney beans, baked beans. Otherwise all well stocked even in peak panic. Seriously just go to the shops, other than your Co op which must have some issues as it is not indicative of the rest of the shops.

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 31/03/2020 09:13

Prioritising the elderly and the vulnerable is the sign of a decent society and is to be welcomed.
If you are not in that category then your need for food to be delivered is not as great as theirs.

If the supermarkets then have additional delivery slots available then you take your chances with the rest of the customers for home delivery. These are difficult times for everyone and those who can, should physically visit the supermarket as infrequently as possible.

OP, is there a reason why you can't get to a supermarket in person?

NotVulnerableStillHungry · 31/03/2020 09:15

I'm in central london so I'm not sure my local co-op is not indicative of everywhere else. I have been to the Co-op, the ASDA and M&S, all of which I can walk to as they are within 2 miles

We obviously shouldn't be getting buses so I'm not going to do that as you physically cannot self distance on one, so I'm limited - as many of us are - to places we can walk to, reasonably, with a toddler.

Getting on two buses to travel to a supermarket (which may not have anything I need) with a toddler touching all and sundry doesn't seem very compliant either....

Doggodogington · 31/03/2020 09:15

I live in range of Tesco, Asda, Lidl, Home bargains, farm foods and a few small corner shops and all of them are pretty much fully stocked. Limiting items such as pasta and toilet rolls but otherwise, apart from social distancing measures, are business as usual.

mumwon · 31/03/2020 09:18

getting a slot because you are over 70 & have multiple issues - yeah right - when ever I look it up there are no slots I have no idea how the system works no slots are shown yet it says there is a space down the bottom for where you are suppose to mention vulnerability but there isn't unless of course you can book a slot which there isn't (& so on) we are traveling over TEN miles to get a pick up from nearest branch of supermarket that does this...so stop telling me how unfair it is!

Tulipstulips · 31/03/2020 09:18

It is right that they prioritise the vulnerable. I really want a delivery slot but ultimately I or DH can get out to the supermarket, as should all able bodied people, though obviously it’s harder for single parents of little ones - they should also be prioritised.

As an aside, it does seem ironic that the entire country has ground to a halt and is heading into a massive recession, with unprecedented unemployment and poverty levels to come, in order to protect the vulnerable, when a year ago many of those classed as vulnerable were demonised as scroungers, and we’re struggling to make ends meet on pathetic disability benefits, thanks to the Tories.

81Byerley · 31/03/2020 09:19

My husband and I are elderly. We can't get delivery slots either... computers can't tell how old you are...

Tulipstulips · 31/03/2020 09:19

Ledkr · 31/03/2020 09:20

Just an example for you to mull over.
My son is shielding so can't go out at all. His girlfriend is pregnant and also shielding to protect him. They are in a one room studio flat with no garden.
My husband and I are key workers so at risk of of contracting cvid and also have an 8 year old to look after.
We are currently, on top of everything else, doing their shopping and our own.
If we become ill and have to self isolate the will need the delivery service to eat.
Go shopping.

ALemonyPea · 31/03/2020 09:20

I'm on the shielding list, so meant to stay indoors for 12 weeks. It is impossible to get a home delivery slot, so it's not just you who can't get them. Those of us who need them can't either.

EmeraldShamrock · 31/03/2020 09:20

If you can manage it yourself then do it. I understand your fears, I was terrified last night though there was a limited number in the store, the staff were spraying and disinfecting everywhere, they offered gloves and anti bac on arrival. I wiped down my trolley, face mask on, list in hand and trolley dashed.
The staff are brilliant doing this daily.
