If Old and Vulnerable are prioritised...

...what the fuck is everyone else supposed to do?

Ocado - prioritising elderly and vulnerable
Waitrose - prioritising elderly and vulnerable
Sainsburys - prioritising elderly and vulnerable
Iceland - prioritising elderly and vulnerable
Morrisons - can't tell as 19014 in the queue trying to get in.

Prioritising the elderly and vulnerable is great, obviously, but it doesn't actually work if you don't have capacity to serve anyone else. Because then it's not prioritising! It's saying "We will not serve you if you are not elderly or vulnerable".

And surprise, surprise, people who aren't vulnerable still need to eat.

So I cannot get anything from any supermarket either delivered or to collect (and I've expanded my search area to 8 miles from my house, nothing). And my local co-op is stripped bare of literally everything except milk, chocolate biscuits and aunt Bessie's frozen yorkshire puds. What good is that, to anyone?

You go to the shop of course. The elderly and vulnerable need the slots, you don't.

Rosehip10 · 31/03/2020 09:44

How lazy OP - get off your arrse and head to a supermarket on foot/by car.

Mascotte · 31/03/2020 09:44

@AthelstaneTheUnready I got on a Facebook page where where very elderly relatives live and a lovely woman volunteered to get their shopping and drop it off.

I’ve done the same for people where I live.

But i would stress that that should be for people who really can’t go to shops themselves as Should deliveries til they get this sorted.

Icantrememebrtheartist · 31/03/2020 09:45

Well then I assume you are neither elderly or vulnerable (do not disabled etc) what you do is... you get dressed, get your bag, open the door and walk out (make sure you hit it behind you) and then you either drive, walk or get public transport to your nearest supermarket and do your shopping like everyone else confused

Oh I remember when my view on life was as simple as this :) And then I had children!

But this won't be the case for everyone, especially those with young children and a partner who is a key worker so still going to work, or a single parent to young children, or have children with additional needs etc.

TheFaerieQueene · 31/03/2020 09:45

No one has a right to a home delivery from a privately owned company. These companies are doing the best they can to help the most vulnerable in society. Lucky you can walk to a shop. Where I live you can’t - at all.

swishthecat · 31/03/2020 09:47

The problem comes when you wind up having to isolate for 2 weeks because someone in your house has symptoms. Cant go down the shops then...

It's not ideal to go to the shops if you are self-isolating, but government guidance says you can if you have to.

FourTeaFallOut · 31/03/2020 09:48

I'm getting a bit fucking sick of all this. Of it's not one thread saying we're not worth all this fuss and we should just do the honourable thing and just fucking die so people can get on with things it's another thread resenting even the idea that we might be prioritised for food slots - even through they know that we can't go out at all and the reason we can't go out at all is because we certainly won't be prioritised for ICU care, although to be fair, I haven't seen anyone whinge about that one yet.

Mascotte · 31/03/2020 09:48

Is it wrong though that I’m now thinking milk, chocolate biscuits and Aunt Bessie’s Yorkshires sound quite a good way to cope with the situation?

BubblesBuddy · 31/03/2020 09:49

The people who have delivery slots in my village are keeping them but asking if the vulnerable group want anything ordered. I am a bit sceptical about this as the slots have not been released. The middle class mummies have just kept the slots but are playing the Lady Bountiful role.

nowaitaminute · 31/03/2020 09:50

@Icantrememebrtheartist I have two children Hmm that doesn't stop me from walking out the door and going to do my shopping. OP needs to get a grip and realise she is lucky in MANY ways. She feels inconvenienced, I get it! But she needs to get over and get on the bus and go find food!

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 31/03/2020 09:50

FourTea it makes me feel better to know there's others in the same boat. I hope it will get better soon.

Well done Mascotte - that made me laugh! Just what I needed. Brilliant humour. Grin

You would be doing the nation a favour by using Aunt Bessies rather than using any of the precious flour, milk and eggs to make fresh yorkshires.

ahiyarose78 · 31/03/2020 09:51

All of these stores are prioritizing the elderly and vulnerable because people who were not elderly and vulnerable decided to hoard everything by buying vast numbers of products they didn’t actually need. I am struggling at present because I am 37 weeks pregnant and struggling to buy more clothes and essentials for the baby. I bought quite a few things before the coronavirus outbreak in this country, but naturally I haven’t bought every item that I need and it has become extremely difficult to do so.

Mascotte · 31/03/2020 09:52

😃Stepping up for my civic duty

NotVulnerableStillHungry · 31/03/2020 09:52

Yes, I’m on my own with LO.

To the people saying to get a bus or taxi, you can’t self distance in either.

Weird that people are sticking up for the policy and also, in 100% of cases, saying that the policy doesn’t work for those in need. So, it doesn’t work for anyone then.

I'm a stubborn git but if the answer to this is joining FaceBook I will starve.

iVampire · 31/03/2020 09:54

Well it’s not currently working for those on the government letter ‘shield’ group, and I think that’s the one that needs to be fitted first

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 31/03/2020 09:54

The policy is ok but it isn't being implemented.

notsuremate · 31/03/2020 09:54

Well said OP. This is an utterly ridiculous situation. What about single mums who can’t take their kids to the shops because they aren’t letting kids in? Elderly and vulnerable are politically decreed to isolate. Therefore there should be a nationwide mobilisation of army catering/delivery trucks to deliver an essential food parcel per week to the vulnerable households and take the pressure off the normal food retailers. Every elderly/vulnerable household registers and they are allocated an army truck delivery date. It gets dropped at their door. A standardised box of essentials. It’s not rocket science. There are army barracks all over. What about the TA? Call up the reserves and the cadets. Time to pull together surely.

caperberries · 31/03/2020 09:56

I've got a smartpass & haven't had any trouble getting slots at Ocado, but I've had to book over a week ahead each time

ipswichwitch · 31/03/2020 09:56

I must have misread that swishthecat! Been a bit of a nightmare all round - my autistic child is the one who had symptoms so I’ve had constant meltdowns to deal with, no wonder my brain is fried!!

nowaitaminute · 31/03/2020 09:56

@NotVulnerableStillHungry you can self distance on a bus!! I have seen it with my very eyes! You are just putting up obstacles. The rules are that you can leave home to do your food shopping. Make a plan and go.
Put your dc in the buggy/pram. Bring some snacks and a toy/iPad etc and put a blanket on dc. Or even better leave at nap time so they sleep.

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 31/03/2020 09:56

I would have thought getting food to the right people would be basic in pandemic planning if isolation is a key strategy. Or did they forget people need to eat Confused?

Mascotte · 31/03/2020 09:57

@notsuremate there is such a scheme for the elderly with local councils.its just being set up. They need to register. I don’t know if it’s for other vulnerable groups too
