To print out a map to follow while reading a book?

Grin

Does anyone else do this? Or just me?

I like to see where I am when I’m reading a book. If it’s just a normal book I can look up the map on my phone. But I’m reading on my phone now and its a real faff having to flick between kindle and google images so I’m going to have to print out a map to refer to while reading.

Please tell me I’m not the only one!

What sort of book do you need a map for? Confused

fruitybum · 31/03/2020 00:34

What?! Confused

fruitybum · 31/03/2020 00:35

Do you mean a bookmark?

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 31/03/2020 00:37

Grin No, a map. If the books involves travel I like to see where the characters are going on a map.

Are you talking about something like Lord of the Rings? If so I’ll refer back to the map but never considered printing it out, not a bad idea though

If it’s not something epic fantasy fiction I don’t understand!

ArriettyJones · 31/03/2020 00:38

Do you mean non fiction?

For example tracking the events of the Profumo affair around London and the Home Counties?

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 31/03/2020 00:38

YES! @thepigeons! I’m reading the last kingdom now and finding it hard to follow where they are travelling too. So I’m going back and forth between kindle and a google image of the map to see where they are.

Great idea. I often look places up that are in the books I am reading.

ArriettyJones · 31/03/2020 00:39

Oh you mean fiction set in specific RL locations?

No, can’t say I do that Grin

I do look up completely irrelevant, incidental detail that crop up in books and films, though.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 31/03/2020 00:40

Do you mean non fiction?

Can be for fiction too, if set in real places. Or if the book provides its own map of the setting.

I get you op. I am an avid reader and if I am reading a book set in another country then I like to look up where I am reading about. The Island is a prime example of this. I spent ages looking at pictures of Spinalonga during and after - it brings it to life more

Purpletigers · 31/03/2020 00:42

Bill Bryson ?

Purpletigers · 31/03/2020 00:43

I do this too btw . I don’t print off a map but I do research the area .

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 31/03/2020 00:44

My family freely pre-judge a book by whether it has a map included Grin

Everything is better with a map

Purpletigers · 31/03/2020 00:44

I did the same thing for the Middle East when I watched homeland .

Purpletigers · 31/03/2020 00:44

Witch- I did that too with The island .

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 31/03/2020 00:46

I did exactly the same with the island!

Does Bill Bryson do this? Or does he have a book with a map?

As I’ve said I’ve not printed a map before but if you’re reading authors like Tad Williams, Steven Erikson or Robert Jordan for example, you do need to keep finding the map page! Easier with a paperback than kindle

Otherwise I get it’s very hard to know where two armies are in relation to each other, or how far a character has to travel

Purpletigers · 31/03/2020 00:46

I often look at the area that movies or series are set in too

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 31/03/2020 00:47

Yes! I love a map. Even if it doesn’t come with a book Grin

The second edition
Of Notes from a Small island took me twice as long to read as I would google all the places he visited .
I don’t think he does include maps

Purpletigers · 31/03/2020 00:49

Maps are one of my most favourite things .

Thepigeonsarecoming · 31/03/2020 00:49

Ahh mine are only fictional not real locations, but they have a map at the beginning of the book and I do constantly check back to that!!

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 31/03/2020 00:49

We have had some movies made in my town and local area and it was brilliant to watch them and know exactly where the characters are and where they’re going to etc. A bit surreal actually.

I enjoy reading Scandinavian crime fiction like Camilla lackberg and I always look at maps of the area. Glad to hear it’s not just me .
