Update guidance on Asthma UK for shielding - some people will be shielding unnecessarily if they don't read it.

Too complicated to post it all but many steroid inhalers have been removed for the list, however, several other criteria have been changed.

Not an AIBU - just a high traffic area.

Thanks for that - it's changed since I last looked at it.

BraveLittleDragon · 30/03/2020 22:43

@Apocalyptichorsewoman Yes, they clarified with the Government today I think.

Hope you guys are Out of the shielding?

FlibbertyGiblets · 30/03/2020 22:47

Very useful, thank you.

InkogKneeToe · 30/03/2020 22:52

That's interesting, I tick 2 of the 3 criteria (high dose steroid preventer plus other preventer) but have never had oral steroids or been hospitalized. Had the NHS extremely vulnerable text though.

BraveLittleDragon · 30/03/2020 22:55

I am getting very confused, I got a text, then got told it was a mistake, but then tick all 3 of the top criteria bullet points, have been in intensive care in the year and take oral steroids regularly (2/3 weeks out of 4)...

I have Sainsburys vulnerable shop but now they've said if you are not on the list this will stop on my account.

OP posts:
BelfryBat · 30/03/2020 23:03

InkogKneeToe would you be able to post the NHS 'extremely vulnerable' text please? I spent an hour on the phone to NHS 111 trying to establish whether or not I fall into this category, because I had a text that implied I did, but NHS111 said I didn't.

Apocalyptichorsewoman · 30/03/2020 23:17

I don't quite meet the criteria. I've had several admissions to hospital with asthma as a result of a cold going to my chest, but not in the last year. I've had ITU out to assess me, but never been in ITU or ventilated. I take oral steroids occasionally, but not more than 4 times in 6 months, and my inhaled steroid dose isn't quite high enough. I'll keep my eye on the guidelines, but in the meantime, it's carry on nursing! 😁

Bumply · 30/03/2020 23:23

My 18 year old didn't meet the original criteria, but now they've added "ever been in ICU" he does.
That was more than 6 years ago, though.
No text.
Having been furloughed by Greggs he's now reverted to his normal state of pretty much never leaving the house so it's just a question of whether I've to stop hugging him - I do go out, but only to shop and for exercise.

PointlessUsername · 30/03/2020 23:29

It only shows between 5- 11 and then over 17.
I have a ds who is 13 on Ventolin & Symbicort?

Bargebill19 · 30/03/2020 23:36

Thank you - I missed that update. I would have had to stop work - I missed the deadline for hospital admission by six weeks. ... carry on caring.

Apocalyptichorsewoman · 30/03/2020 23:41

Jeepers Bargebill19! 6 weeks...

symbioticpatriot · 30/03/2020 23:49

Thanks... DD 15 is on quite a high dose of seretide so qualifies although just before this all kicked off we were told to reduce... truth be told I am scared to in the current circumstances. Never any admissions etc though.

wikedminx · 30/03/2020 23:49

I am waiting to find out if I am to shield, I have relvar Elliott 92/22 once a day, and my blue inhaler as needed, I was in hospital with Bilateral pneumonia In January, and still not 100% fit. I can’t understand the table on the asthma uk site!

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 31/03/2020 00:05

Thank you for starting this thread. It's been so informative. I have registered myself as vulnerable. I have had asthma most of my life which has developed into COPD. I was hospitalised with it twice last autumn. I'm on Trimbow, Ventolin and Montelukast. I need antibiotics and steroids roughly every six weeks..

By what seems now a lucky chance, I came to my parents to help them over a mild bug towards the end of February. They are 90+ and normally independent but were struggling. I'm 60+ and on maximum PIP but can still cook and carry trays. My DM jokes that between the three of us we make one functioning person.

I get on extremely well with my parents, and now I'm living with them in a spacious and secluded farmhouse in the country. They have a big garden. My adult DC are so pleased I'm here. They feel I'm much safer than at home. I'll stay for the foreseeable future.

The downside of all this is that if one of us gets covid 19 it'll probably kill the lot of us. But I can't see any way round this.

Bargebill19 · 31/03/2020 00:20

Apocalyptichorsewoman - love the name.! Yep 6 weeks. Both terrified yet relieved I can continue to care for my lovely residents (and their families where I can).

ZarkingBell · 31/03/2020 00:30

Thanks, helpful.
I was surprised to find myself so close to 'shielding' in the last list!
I have plenty of issues so as a family we have as little contact as possible. I'm glad to find myself further away from the cut off line though.
Social distancing hugs to all of yo within it.

KatyMac · 31/03/2020 00:33

I haven't got a clue any more

I'm going to have to sit with DD & DH's meds around me and work it out

It's seems bizarre that someone with long term lung damage like DH might not be on the list (Bronchiectasis)

KatyMac · 31/03/2020 00:40

WHat does this mean please?

"Extra-fine particle CFC-free inhalers include brands such as Qvar and Fostair, which are more potent than standard particle CFC-free inhalers. Fostair and Fostair NEXThaler are combination products containing beclometasone dipropionate with formoterol. The manufacturer’s SPC and the BNF indicate that 100 micrograms of beclometasone dipropionate via Qvar products are approximately equivalent to 200–250 micrograms of beclometasone dipropionate in standard particle CFC-free inhalers, and 200–250 micrograms of budesonide; 100 micrograms of beclometasone dipropionate via Fostair products are equivalent to 250 micrograms of beclometasone dipropionate in standard particle CFC-free inhalers."

InkogKneeToe · 31/03/2020 08:59

@BelfryBat

I think regardless of medication, history etc the best thing is for people to isolate/shield as much as possible.

I'm assuming the text was triggered by my asthma (I'm on the cusp of consultant rather than GP care). I also have heart failure, albeit currently mild, but I don't think that's on the list of high risk conditions.

We're being as cautious but realistic as we can. I can't isolate from the people in my house. I can't stay in all day with a toddler but we're only going out once a day to burn off some energy and get some fresh air away from anyone else. We're getting shopping delivered rather than going to supermarkets.

If I were to get it, I'd be happy that I'd done everything reasonably possible to prevent it and it's just bad luck.

BraveLittleDragon · 31/03/2020 09:27

@KatyMac Your second post is (I think) a list of steroid inhalers...

You can also email your GP surgery to ask?

@Prawnofthepatriarchy I think if you are sensible, and really self isolate any family member that has it then you will all be OK. Country farmhouse sounds idylic! Do you have animals there?

OP posts:
KatyMac · 31/03/2020 09:39

DH is on Doxcycline daily, fostair 100/6 2x2 a day plus beclometasone dipropionate 50 micrograms 2x2 a day and montelucast

can anyone work it out for me?

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 31/03/2020 09:41

Fostair 200/6 was on the previous list. I don't understand this list to see if its on it.

If it is it looks like theyve said their original list still need to be shielded but roughly only the hospital led cases will get a letter?

DrMadelineMaxwell · 31/03/2020 09:45

No letter, I'm 2 courses of pred short to get it, but asthma UK strongly recommends that I shield anyway based on my inhaler requirements.

Yep, that's going to go down well with work if schools reopen before the 12 weeks are up! (Not that likely to be fair).

Mendeleev · 31/03/2020 09:52

Fostair is beclometasone dipropionate AND
formoterol fumarate dihydrate combined. Fostair is the market name.

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 31/03/2020 10:03

I got as far as working out the but about fostaira ingredients but not the dose!
