Homeless

I am absolutely astounded at the USA response to homeless people.

In this country we have tried to find them shelter but theUS rounds them up and places them on the concrete floor of a parking lot in Las Vegas.

With 1000s of hotel rooms empty.

We have problems but the lack of compassion or humanity in allegedly civilised country beggars belief.

Do you have a source for that?

Is this the story you mean?

SquireOfGreenway · 30/03/2020 20:07

Anybody who is homeless is homeless for a reason. Those reasons may be complex; but it is beyond the scope of most private hotels to address those issues.

There are responsibilities as well as rights to stay in a hotel room. Many homeless people would be incapable of discharging the responsibilities of staying in a hotel - they would end up trashing the room or stealing property from it.

Squires, thats very mean indeed.

Where's your human compassion?

Would you prefer we all dropped dead?

Look how they treat illegals in custody. Separating mothers and children and expecting older kids to take care of the younger ones

And this surprises you?

DetroitOnTheMove · 30/03/2020 20:18

Im very grateful for my camping spot on private land. I've cold water, electric access and a porta potty. One other person camping. I'm allowed to be here, I pay a fee for it.

I'd rather be dead than go into a shelter.

I'm nowhere near anyone else. I don't see anyone. I'm not bothering anyone. I'm trying not to have any contact with people so I don't get it and am not a burden. If I do, I won't seek treatment.

My usual showers are closed down, so I'm boiling water and washing. Life got harder, but hasn't changed much.

I don't drink, don't smoke, and don't gamble. I lost my home when I fled my violent husband. Please don't stand in judgement of homeless people, we have enough to contend with.

Poppi89 · 30/03/2020 20:26

@Detroitonthemove I really admire you. It's so frustrating when people assume that people only become homeless because they must be addicted to drugs or something.

Escapeistheonlyoption · 30/03/2020 20:26

There are an estimated 108,000 homeless people in california alone. They are certainly not homeless for the reasons that you might be homeless in the UK.

Unless you have seen it- it is unbelievable. People with tents on scrap land by railways - that is their home. All over the place

Lots of young men who clearly have ASD in their 20s who are homeless. No access to basic medical services or medication for SEMH. I work with ASD pupils and this is so preventable.

This is life without a welfare state folks.

MadameBee · 30/03/2020 20:32

I found it interesting that we have managed to find all our homeless shelter within a few days.

Shows that we don’t do nearly enough for them.

The only reason we are doing it is because they pose a risk to the rest of us, not because we actually care Sad

DetroitOnTheMove · 30/03/2020 20:35

Tea. I might be somewhat addicted to hot drinks. I also like chocolate. I've no chocolate left so am eating two spoons of brown sugar to try and keep my blood sugar up. I'm going somewhat hungry, as I'm rationing supplies, but not dangerously so. I cooked potatoes and carrots one day, left overs the next. Cans of fish. I've bad long standing allergies (nuts, grains), so things are precarious.

Yes, but the sneering at homeless people assuming drug and alcohol problems, or that we are all feral menances not to be trusted with adequate shelter is beyond the pale.

DetroitOnTheMove · 30/03/2020 20:39

Some people do care, madambee. It's those that you have to concentrate on. I know some people care. The rest don't matter, apart from the compassionless hatred they spread. It's worse than the virus.

I've a tub of Lysol wipes, a Lysol spray, rubbing alcohol, two rolls of toilet paper and cans of sardines. I'm rich for once!

Leaannb · 30/03/2020 20:39

@Bucketgarni what in the world dies Trump have to do with this. He can't control what private companies do with their own property? As much as I detest Trump you can't blame him for everything?

TheFaerieQueene · 30/03/2020 20:42

Trump owns enough hotels to offer help to the homeless @Leaannb. But he won’t because he is a bastard.

MadameBee · 30/03/2020 20:43

@DetroitOnTheMove

I meant “the powers that be” not “people”.

DetroitOnTheMove · 30/03/2020 20:45

The buck stops with trumpski. He believes in prosperity teaching. That God is punishing people who are poor and rewards with riches, just look at that Paula white that he listens to.

Trump doesn't appear to have a Christian bone in his body, nor any secular love for his fellow man. It's all about money with that one.

DetroitOnTheMove · 30/03/2020 20:47

Ah, madamBee, got it! The powers that be hate the homeless. We are clutter to them. I'm pretty sure they are rubbing their hands together in glee at the thought of the virus running through this shelters.

BraveLittleDragon · 30/03/2020 20:49

@DetroitOnTheMove I admire you too. I was hostel homeless for six years, it was incredibly tough.

billy1966 · 30/03/2020 20:51

The treatment of the poor during Hurricane Katrina is the hallmark of how America treats its disadvantaged.

They lecture the world but are truly a third world country when it comes to caring for their weakest.

DetroitOnTheMove · 30/03/2020 20:54

Bravelittledragon, well done surviving and getting out of it! That's pretty amazing, sweetie. How are you doing now?

Poppi, thank you Flowers

I'm doing my best. We really need to encourage compassion and kindness and push down the meanness.

Purpleartichoke · 30/03/2020 21:12

Detroit

You don’t have to answer this question, but you strike me as someone who just needs a stable address for a month or two so you can get a job and get your own place. I know it varies by location, but I thought domestic violence shelters were supposed to be precisely that?

DetroitOnTheMove · 30/03/2020 21:14

Yeah if men in dresses weren't in them that's where I'ld be.

Purpleartichoke · 30/03/2020 21:17

Yes, that would put me off too

DetroitOnTheMove · 30/03/2020 21:28

Jobs...everyone's lost their jobs out here. It's economic carnage. I'm going to keep my head down and see if I can survive it.
