Banning Easter eggs a step too far

VivienScott · 30/03/2020 14:30

I’ve just read that some officials are cracking down on shops selling Easter eggs as it’s non-essential. Isn’t this all going a bit far now? Easter eggs aren’t essential but a chocolate bar is? Feels like some people are letting a minuscule bit of power go straight to their heads.

Yes, I think most sensible people will realise that the easter egg nonsense was down to a couple of rather silly people.

They exist in all walks of life but as things stand at the moment it's important things like this are not allowed to continue, as that sort of behaviour will, understandably, just alienate people.

Perhaps the police need a bit more firm guidance from the government as to what is acceptable and what is required, instead of leaving it to their discretion.

That was part of the problem when social distancing was first introduced, it was all 'we'd like you to do this, if you wouldn't mind' instead of 'this is what you must do'.

Shell4429 · 31/03/2020 17:48

No Easter Egg ban. It’s fake news - although you can’t go out JUST to get one, it obviously has to be purchased along with essentials.

Frazzledstar1 · 31/03/2020 17:51

Ridiculous. Obviously going out purely for Easter eggs is not on but I don’t see the harm in people grabbing a couple if they’re already in the supermarket getting their weekly shop.

RiverTamFan · 31/03/2020 17:53

No issues around here about Easter Eggs but a local newsagent has stopped selling scratch cards because of the number of people still coming in to buy a scratch card and nothing else. Staff had had enough!

Kayagh · 31/03/2020 18:42

I needed milk and bread the other day as I didn’t stock pile and have 5 kids to feed tried to buy 4 bars of dairy milk and was made to put two back it was a little treat for my daughters birthday along with a tub of ice cream kids wanted some chocolate honestly I felt this was a step too far and glad I got my Easter eggs weeks ago.

Diva66 · 31/03/2020 20:30

Read the article. They’re not banned.

JCSAR · 31/03/2020 20:56

I’d want to tell them where to go if they tried to stop me buying Easter eggs!! I’ve bought big eggs and small eggs for an egg hunt as I usually would. We always have one around the house or the garden if the weather is good. I was actually talking about Easter eggs with my dad today and I said I’m glad I’ve managed to get them because my son loves Easter and with all the crap and uncertainty at the moment it’s nice to be able to do somethings that we normally would and not let this virus ruin things we can control for our children. It’s so hard on them anyway when they’re young.

SnowsInWater · 31/03/2020 22:25

The UK has gone nuts (according to MN anyway) it will be interesting to see if we follow in a couple of weeks. I am in Aus where the “only essential trips” has just come in. I dropped DS at work yesterday - bottle shops will never close here - and drove past Maccas on the way home. I went through the drive though and got a thick shake for DD who was diligently doing her schoolwork at home, now of course I wouldn’t have driven to Maccas for a milkshake but as I was driving past and it was open I thought it was fair game, I would have thought same with the Easter eggs.

Madness, they would let you buy two multi packs with 4 or 5 bars in each. I keep hearing about "commonsense" but there doesn't seem to be much of it about. Happy birthday to your daughter.

Scott72 · 31/03/2020 22:40

" - bottle shops will never close here - "

Why not? They closed them in New Zealand under "stage 4 quarantine", with only a few community-owned shops allowed to remain open.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 31/03/2020 22:40

JudyCoolibar I can also confirm that Devon and Cornwall Police have been stopping people “who don’t look like key workers” on their way to work..... nutbags

What does a key worker look like? That's just daft.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 31/03/2020 22:57

Has there been a shortage of Dairy Milk? It makes sense to limit how many people can buy of things everyone has gone a bit mad with, like hand sanitizer, but unless shops have been running low on chocolate I don't see any reason why it should be rationed. Can everyone not be sensible about this?

thebillmoon · 01/04/2020 12:16

It would be madness to ban Easter eggs. If you do have a cough; cold or sore throat chocolate of all sorts keeps your throat in good nick and stops that throat getting worse. I am on a giant chocolate button diet at the moment due to an annual cough I get in March every year. Interestingly, a top doctor I know said chocolate is good for you. Happy Shopper giant chocolate buttons are really tasty.

Xenia · 01/04/2020 19:44

Also the Devon police will be wronng - everyone in the country is allowed to work (other than those on a very very limited list - restaurants et and those who could work from home (very few can work from home) ) and we want them to do so to pay taxes to fund nurses; pay - they are heroes. So that will be justice system judges, court clerks, barristers who might be in suits, traders who can only work with the very fast fibre optic cable at work, delivery drivers like my son, sewage workers, men who fix central heating, garage men all sorts.

1forsorrow · 01/04/2020 19:46

The milk button cure for sore throat sounds good. I'm almost as excited as when a doctor told my mother that a glass of Coke was the best thing for a stomach upset. I didn't even have to bribe him.

MashedPotatoBrainz · 01/04/2020 19:54

I consider Easter eggs an essential item. We got a 'prepare for crisis' leaflet from our government last year and it gives a lot of advice on what you should think about when stocking up in a crisis. They are very clear that you need to think about supplies which feed your mental health as well as your hunger. What keeps your spirits up?

Last week I bought a load of family size packs of sweets. Essential for us. DS is autistic and his routine is that every Saturday he goes to pick and mix with Daddy. Taking that away from him would be devastating and he wouldn't cope at all. So we'll have pick and mix at home instead. Keeping things as normal as possible is what will keep us sane and get us all through this.

Lovely13 · 02/04/2020 02:32

And £150million worth of flowers etc about to go into landfill because garden centres can’t open. I don’t see why they can’t if they do the 2 metre rule etc. Gardening is good exercise. Mentally and physically. And the plants are going to be binned! Just awful waste.

Imstillskanking · 02/04/2020 02:41

Was this decided by the high court of mumsnet? They have enforced a lot of shopping trolley bans so far. I wouldn't be surprised if Easter Eggs was on there.

@nottspolice
when will you decide to adopt the same actions as Devon and Cornwall Police and actively stoping busses to check that people are travelling essentially as I am noticing a lot of people just aimlessly travelling and bus operators can’t enforce this

mooboy · 02/04/2020 08:09

So online shop arriving but they've swapped the cadburys mini egg easter eggs for Lindt Dark Chocolate - now that's not a swap that's going to go down well with the kids...

Iwalkinmyclothing · 02/04/2020 08:37

God, @mooboy, that would cause all sorts of ructions in my house

BubblesBuddy · 02/04/2020 09:35

Well you can always give the Lindt chocolate to an elderly or vulnerable person who cannot get a shopping slot! They would love the chocolate no doubt.

mooboy · 02/04/2020 09:36

@Iwalkinmyclothing I've just delivered the bad news to them and it was taken on the chin - can't believe it - I was expecting all sorts of tears...

Iwalkinmyclothing · 02/04/2020 09:43

Good on your dc mooboy! (Does that mean they will eat it? Surely they won't want it and you will be forced to eat it to prevent waste?)
