Lordfrontpaw · 30/03/2020 11:36

wheesht

anotherlittlechicken · 30/03/2020 11:36

@meditereb

Why haven't you come back to the thread?

Blackbear19 · 30/03/2020 11:37

It is wean, definitely (said in Glaswegian pronunciation : ie definettly

Thank-you for the wee clarification of the spelling of wean!
And thank-you very much for pointing out why I am never 100% sure of the spelling of definitely even when it pops up on the predictive text. Grin

ChinookPilotsGoVertical · 30/03/2020 11:40

As a Cornishman with Scots descent, who spent time in the military, my everyday conversations often need translated for my London based colleagues.
BTW, we use "tatties" in Cornwall, though we often pronounce it "tay-ties".
I often use "wee" as I grew up with Scots expressions & later worked with lots of Scots & people from Norn Iron.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 30/03/2020 11:42

Lordfrontpaw yeah, that wasn't intentional. That was Mumsnetting while stopping DC downing the flowers when they water then.

SquirrelInTheOak · 30/03/2020 11:42
Hmm
Lordfrontpaw · 30/03/2020 11:43

I still remember my history teacher "acht ye wee scunner!" Grin

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 30/03/2020 11:43

But I love that spag pedants come out dialect threads too Grin

anotherlittlechicken · 30/03/2020 11:43

I had never heard of WEAN as a description of a baby/toddler, until last week, when I watched 'The Nest' on BBC.

I am loving learning all these wonderful Scottish phrases. I am certainly not offended by it, or asking 'wtf is this word supposed to be?'

The UK is littered with Regional Dialects. Anyone who doesn't get that can go take a long walk off a short pier. Grin

Mordred · 30/03/2020 11:43

From the sentence construction ("Why is used for everything ?") I'd say the OP was Central or Eastern European.

DW used to write like that, still does sometimes.

Presumably OP hasn't been back because she's embarrassed and feeling thoroughly told off.

OverUnderSidewaysDown · 30/03/2020 11:45

Naw, the pedants would be starting the argument about whether Scots is a LANGUAGE or a DIALECT.
On the basis of this thread I assert that it is a LANGUAGE.
Gavel.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 30/03/2020 11:45

And because people keep asking her if she's a goat eating bridge dweller.

midsomermurderess · 30/03/2020 11:46

9 pages on the word 'wee'. Blimey, the op saw you lot coming.

playthestation · 30/03/2020 11:46

wean/wain is used in the west coast. In the east coast we say bairn.

Predominantly yes. But people still use wean also.

MashedSpud · 30/03/2020 11:49

Over 200 messages later and the wee div op doesn’t return.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 30/03/2020 11:53

midsomermurderess hey, it's more entertaining than the majority of other threads ATM.

StoorieHoose · 30/03/2020 11:53

Wean in my part of Central Scotland

Shefliesonherownwings · 30/03/2020 11:53

Wee isn't just used in the UK, my DM is originally from NZ and it's used a lot over there too, albeit probably because of settlers from the UK. I grew up hearing DM say it so I also use it a lot despite living down south and my NZ family and friends use it a fair bit as well.

mintyroller · 30/03/2020 11:53

🎵Stop the bus, I need a wee wee
Stop the bus, I need a wee wee
Stop the bus I need a wee wee
A wee wee cup o te-e-ea🎵

mooboy · 30/03/2020 11:55

Potatoes would be Prayties in rural Norn Iron.

Mordred · 30/03/2020 12:00

"my DM is originally from NZ and it's used a lot over there too, albeit probably because of settlers from the UK."

Yea lots of Scottish settlers in NZ, hence the city of Dunedin, which is the Celtic name for Edinburgh (Edinburgh being a thoroughly Northumbrian name which means the same thing)

anotherlittlechicken · 30/03/2020 12:05

@MashedSpud A wee bit annoying that the OP hasna come back!

Over 200 messages later and the wee div op doesn’t return.

Personally I think they should keep their neb oot of peoples business.

@meditereb Here you go. May help ya. Grin

HaudMaDug · 30/03/2020 12:07

Just to confuse things more, up here 'wee' can also be 'smaw'.

NellVarnish · 30/03/2020 12:14

This is the best thread ever. A wee streamie or a wee jobby is very West of Scotland where I’m from, and a wee wean. @HaudMaDug smaw rain (along with horizontal pishin’ it doon rain), was very familiar when I was wee, and necessitated the use of a wee heidscarf or a wee rainmate.

I bloody love being Scottish.

NellVarnish · 30/03/2020 12:15

Also I remember ScottishMummy and her ‘creepy wee brackets’. Grin
