What does it mean ? Why is used for everything ?

OP posts:
Thoughtlessinengland · 30/03/2020 11:09

what is the point of this thread?

The point of this thread is for OP to have a wee laugh. The plan was to throw a little goady nugget into the ring and watch tons of MNer rush in and dance. OPs purpose has been served.

mooboy · 30/03/2020 11:10

Asking someone - maybe a child to "wait a wee minute" is a gentler way of asking them to "wait a minute", it infers a softer, more tender way of asking. True but adults will use it with other adults - it's meant well but can feel a bit odd at first.

LaurieMarlow · 30/03/2020 11:10

Is a wee streamie what I think it is? Grin

Google didn’t help btw.

dementedpixie · 30/03/2020 11:11

Yes it is going for a pee

Puffalicious · 30/03/2020 11:12

Never seen wain- West coast here ( Glasgow) always wean ( as in wee un).

Bairn is Dundee/ East coast.

coconuttelegraph · 30/03/2020 11:14

I think this thread is a result of no school and bored children...

Do you seriously know any school child who would play the long game by setting up an account on MN, posting for 9 months on the off chance that there might be an pandemic when they could post stupid questions?

TitianaTitsling · 30/03/2020 11:14

@ThumbWitchesAbroad it's been well answered, a definite term of endearment, used in such as child fallen over and grazed knee 'oh you wee scone, do you need a hug' can also be used sarcastically of course 'oh it's such a hard life being so popular and beautiful.. you poor wee scone'. Grin

Deathraystare · 30/03/2020 11:15

One of mum's freinds was Scottish and always used 'wee' for anything small. We christened her Tiny Wee! She wasn't !

Piggywaspushed · 30/03/2020 11:16

AS does rather suggest OP is real by the way! And not a wee lassie having a wee laugh.

Lessstressedhemum · 30/03/2020 11:16

I absolutely had wee weans. I'm on the west coast and that's what they are called here. Or even wee bits of weans.Grin

Sloff · 30/03/2020 11:22

Anything is possible these days. May be using a parent's account, who knows? Does the op often ask these kind of questions, I didn't look? Regardless, it still could be a bored younger person messing about, or even a bored older one.

OverUnderSidewaysDown · 30/03/2020 11:22

The current pandemic is also bringing to mind the difference between feeling:-

No affie weel

And

Affie no weel

eggandonion · 30/03/2020 11:23

Dh and I spent a few weeks watching a wee episode a night of Two Doors Down. We're from Belfast, so didn't need wee subitiles.

Aweebawbee · 30/03/2020 11:24

My ears are burning.

RuggerHug · 30/03/2020 11:24

The wee English fella in Derry Girls can explain.

'The fact that people here use the word wee to describe things that aren't actually that small'.

Lordfrontpaw · 30/03/2020 11:25

Did the OP not come back then?

viques · 30/03/2020 11:26

what a great thread.

A million thanks to the OP for setting it off . Sometimes it's the little things that are the best. Sorry I meant the wee things........

Also thanks to OverSideways Upside Down (hope I got that right) for the poem. I don't know what a Malkie is but I don't think I want one in my house.

derxa · 30/03/2020 11:26

My first patient had a “dry boak” and a “sair thrapple”, and I was perplexed! Grin Bless you Babdoc and thanks for the laugh.
Nurses often ask people for a 'wee signature'.
We call one of our sheep 'wee' Gleneagles even though he is a big bruiser and pure dead evil

viques · 30/03/2020 11:28

I don't know what a Malkie is

Don't panic, not a request, I'm going to google it.

Grin
TheProdigalKittensReturn · 30/03/2020 11:29

Ponder the words "we'll just need a wee sample" in a medical context.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 30/03/2020 11:31

Wain where I am.

Lordfrontpaw · 30/03/2020 11:32

Wean?

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 30/03/2020 11:33

Bairn where I'm from.

Camouflage · 30/03/2020 11:33

@playthestation wean/wain is used in the west coast. In the east coast we say bairn.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 30/03/2020 11:33

Multiple spellings I think. I've seen about 3 for wheest. Possibly it depends on area?
