Watched this evening on Disney Plus. Electroshock therapy in a freaky hospital. The Scarecrow's face. The Wheelers! Screeching headless witch.

Absolutely brilliant film but it scares the bejeesus out of me! 😱

I still have nightmares about this film! I have really weird dreams though 😂

maddening · 29/03/2020 23:11

We have been watching indiana jones, lost ark and temple of doom - both pgs and both pretty gory actually! We were quite shocked watching with dc despite having watched them loads of times, I don't think you realise until you sat with to your own dc.

ChipsAreLife · 29/03/2020 23:11

I can't bring myself to watch it! Scared the shit out of me as a child!!!

Were our parents more chilled back then? You can't imagine it coming out now can you?!

AravisTarkheena · 29/03/2020 23:13

I also watched Temple of Doom recently and found it very disturbing!

Siameasy · 29/03/2020 23:13

Watcher In the Woods scared the shit out of me for years but I love(d) being scared and still do
PG is right for this. Being scared isn’t really harmful, maybe a bit unpleasant. That’s probably why.

Also Dorothy seems so much younger in the return to the first one ...

OMG, I have such a fear of the Wizard of Oz, it revolts me and i refuse to watch it when it's on. I've just realized it's not the bloody Wizard of Oz that traumatised me as a child, its Return to Oz! I feel like such a muppet.

Falacy · 29/03/2020 23:18

So I "rediscovered" this film a couple of years ago and was absolutely gobsmacked to learn it was actually a film.

I'm 27 and spent my whole adult life thinking I'd actually dreamed it / made it up 😂

Clearly I watched it as a child and was so traumatised I blocked it all out.

I don't think I could watch it again.

I do however absolutely love Labyrinth which has similar kinda vibes but less creepy. I must have seen it 1000 times and watch it a couple of times a year.

Never Ending Story is right in the middle. That creeps me out. Haven't watched it in ages but I think it's the scenes with the Princesses court and the weird heads.

Noooblerooble · 29/03/2020 23:18

It is absolutely terrifying and I also loved it as a child. I need to rewatch it!

ShrimpSymphony · 29/03/2020 23:27

I was terrified of this as a child. Never been able to watch it since

Nowifi · 29/03/2020 23:38

@boswellsBollocks yes I forgot she was in the Worst Witch too, I loved that too! Obviously a secret fan of hers even though she freaked me out in The Craft Grin

Wotsitsarecheesy · 29/03/2020 23:44

Don't think anyone has mentioned, but when this was released there was no 12 rating so lots of older films are PG that would be a 12 today. I remember watching Robin Hood Prince of Thieves with the kids. It was a PG originally so I figured it was fine, and I'd forgotten just how bad/gruesome some of it was. When it was rereleased more recently it was a 12.

Percivalthebabyspider · 30/03/2020 00:25

BoswellsBollocks I agree with you. The Worst Witch is legendary.

Writersblock2 · 30/03/2020 02:29

I’m so glad you’ve made this thread. I’ve found my people! Grin

Return to Oz is one of my favourite movies of all time, and I think it’s the best Disney movie there is. Maybe I had a messed up childhood, but for me, part of using your imagination and my love of stories is about being scared out of my mind. Return to Oz is deliciously horrifying, but then so much was back when I was a kid. My favourite books were the Magic Faraway Tree books and there were certainly some twisted things going on up that tree too.

Then again, I was the kid who used to steal her mother’s horror books (Stephen King etc), and read them under the covers at night.

P.S. I had a crush on Jack Pumpkin Head. 🎃 Yeaaaaaaaah.

LangSpartacusCleg · 30/03/2020 04:21

It scared the crap out of me as a child. I would never watch it again.

I’ve been rewatching the bond films again and have been surprised at the violence in them that I really didn’t remember. I thought it was more cartoonish as a child but now, as an adult, I think some of it is horrendous. Don’t get me started on the sexism!

RichPetunia · 30/03/2020 04:27

I hated it. Not a patch on The Wizard of Oz.

Witchend · 30/03/2020 07:13

It was my cousin's favourite film from about aged 5yo.

evilharpy · 30/03/2020 07:18

My parents took me to see it at the cinema when it was released - I would have been five, same age as my daughter is now. I was petrified of the Nome King. Can’t imagine letting my daughter watch it, she wouldn’t sleep for a month.

I love it now though!
