The ethics of unnecessary deliveries

nomdefuckit · 29/03/2020 15:27

AIBU to wonder about this?

We're doing a 12 week lock down as DH in the shielding group. Nobody gets in or out, including toddler

I would love to order more stuff to keep him entertained, garden stuff, DIY stuff etc

I haven't because I thought it was wrong for a number of reasons

1: infection risk - every delivery has that potential
2: employees of delivery companies should not be pressured to work more than necessary for their own health
3: more drivers going out and about is more opportunities for the virus to spread
4: there is limited capacity in the system for deliveries. It should be left for essentials

Yet I have seen on here and elsewhere (fb mainly) people talking openly about the nice candles, home furnishings, make up etc that they have ordered

Anybody else a bit shocked by this?

Oh and my cpn suggested that I do what I need to do, order what I needed to etc because he can already see a rise in admissions and patients mental health getting really bad. Even people developing psychosis whereas before it would have been manageable. People have been wandering in the streets too.

nomdefuckit · 29/03/2020 19:04

@Thoughtlessinengland

Because my DH would probably die if he got it.

I have ordered non essentials. Mainly gifts for dd's 18th birthday next weekend. I didn't want her not having something to open. I also ordered a fire stick once I realised Disney+ didn't have an app on our Tv make. I've ordered Hit Chocolat hot chocolate sachets as we had run low, and grabbed Easter eggs from their too, also some coffee pods. I'd normally get via Ocado but can't get on as yet.

I wash my hands after taking the delivery in and dispose of the packaging. All deliveries have been left on the doorstep.

We've also had a couple of non essential takeaways too.

At the moment we are allowed to order non essential items, either via supermarket shops or other online stores.

Loooobyloo · 29/03/2020 19:04

Gettinglikemymother no problem for you, you don't touch it for 48hours. I don't have that option.

PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock · 29/03/2020 19:05
  • we get furloughed

It will be fine*

Ah ok, completely fair enough then, and don't blame you at being angry for drawing the short stick and still having to work.

nomdefuckit · 29/03/2020 19:05

Interesting to see the posts from warehouse and delivery workers. Hope you're all ok. Scary times.

@Loooobyloo I hope things get easier for us all soon

What a selfish British Public we have out there.... I had some woman screaming at me as she couldn’t come in store to buy some new curtains!! She was LIVID. Had to laugh

Then a guy who needs some plywood/nails etc to secure his pharmacy which was broken into for any remaining medications ( who I happily helped) it was essential

Curtains?? Do one luv

Boobooboo84 · 29/03/2020 19:08

@JustStayAtHome

If at any point the government shuts down online purchases, I’m not going to do anything other than.... nod and accept.

Until such a time, I will purchase online freely. Whether that be for “essentials” or for a nice jumper and a candle!

You aren’t an expert; you’re not a decision maker. You’re a mumnetter, so forgive me if I’m a bit Confused ShockGrin about your histrionics

Loooobyloo · 29/03/2020 19:09

Princessconsula yept and that's the problem. I'm very torn. while I appreciate having work while others are losing their jobs, I also wish we were looked after a lot better. I bring my own gloves but I can't clean every parcel before I put them in the car.

I may start spraying them with disinfectant cleaner.

fantasmasgoria1 · 29/03/2020 19:09

Oh and the derogatory comments directed toward those with mental illnesses is disgusting. If it was a person in a wheelchair etc you would not be saying this. Mental illness is extremely debilitating. Honestly. I have only been ordering from sellers who use royal mail. An old friends husband works for royal mail and he said he doesn't mind. He would rather be working because he said he would go mad stuck at home. He has sanitiser etc. He puts stuff at the door and walks away.

nomdefuckit · 29/03/2020 19:09

Jesus Christ @Boobooboo84

What an unpleasant post.

Your “essential” food... was it enough to sustain life.

Or did you throw in a bag of coffee? A packet of biscuits perhaps?

BlimeyCalmDown · 29/03/2020 19:11

YABU what ever helps people get through this and also helps the economy if positive and if the deliveries take longer for those things then fine. Just clean them and stop worrying about what other people are doing.

PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock · 29/03/2020 19:12

Looooob* (is that enough o's?) would customers/consumers be able to affect positively the conditions you work in by their online shopping behaviour or is that entirely up to the company?

Boobooboo84 · 29/03/2020 19:12

I find your scathing judgement of others unpleasant

I’ll leave you to stew and find things to be angry about. Whilst I’ll light a new candle and watch a film. All the best,

IWantT0BreakFree · 29/03/2020 19:13

For every warehouse employee who wants to stay at work to keep occupied, there is another who is forced to be there every day in unsafe conditions and with no option to refuse if they want to keep their job and feed their family. I don't think everybody can genuinely have missed the reports in the media on this issue, I think it's willful ignorance. It's obscene for people who have been furloughed, are WFH, or for whatever reason are at home and safe, to be placing unnecessary orders for luxury items that force so many other (largely low-paid) workers to attend unsafe working environments. I'm sure candles and makeup and whatever else is cheering you up, but who gives a shit about that when you are forcing someone else to risk their health (and life) and that of their loved ones in order to indulge you. It's disgusting. And give over with the "supporting the economy" shite. That's nobody's motivation.

EffOrf · 29/03/2020 19:13

Lots of randoms on the internet trying to lay down the law, who knows what they are doing in real life, maybe the opposite of what they preach we will never know

nomdefuckit · 29/03/2020 19:13

Candles are genuinely bad for your lungs.

It's not dissimilar to passive smoking

Small saving grace of this thread

* Candles are genuinely bad for your lungs.*

Genuinely made me laugh out loud!

InescapableDeath · 29/03/2020 19:16

I’m happy to shop from some smal one-woman indie shops where they have posted they would like to keep going and plan to do so safely.

I have also ordered some educational bits for amazon though so still a wee bit evil.

Ohh I'm saving that for the next smoker bashing thread.

ListeningQuietly · 29/03/2020 19:16

Oh FFS with the disinfectant spray
and the 80% shite that nobody is getting get

basic personal hygiene
(collect parcel, unwrap without picking your face, put packaging in bin, wash hands)
is all that is needed

Covid kills between 1% and 3%

2 years ago Kerala in India had an outbreak of Nipah virus that kills 75% of those who get it

Get a ferkin perspective folks
the taxes of the healthy pay for the hospitals of the ill

Itsmybirthday19 · 29/03/2020 19:17

You can entertain/cheer/busy yourself without ordering a load of plastic landfill fodder that some poor bastard has to risk life and limb packing for £8.21 an hour you know.

Presumably, given we live in a democracy, that bastard is there by choice and would quite like to get paid/still have a job when all this is over?

Or do you believe they shouldn't be free to make that choice, OP?

I'll remember that when I blow out my birthday candles.
