Where can I get a desk?

I’m working from home for the long haul by the looks of it. I don’t have a desk/chair at home so working from the sofa but it’s really starting to affect my back. It really hurts. I know it’s not “essential” but would anyone know where I could get a desk quickly? I tried ikea but everything I chose wasn’t available for delivery and amazon has 4-6 week wait list. I’m in London

We have this issue. Dh works at home quite often so uses the desk in our study. I rarely wfh so on the occasions I did, I used the kitchen table but when a couple of weeks ago it was clear we would be moving to wfh I had to do something as my back was crippling me.

I bought a cheap fold-up table from Amazon which is great. I've set up a workstation in the corner of our living room I only need it for my laptop so it's perfect. After this is over it can be folded up and slid under the sofa so the living room is back to normal,, but can get it out and up in seconds.
I think it was this one:

posted too soon. - also, do whatever you can to get hold of a proper office chair. i was really Iucky in that DHs manager allowed him to take a chair from their office as it is shut for the foreseeable future. We already had a chair in the study so I got the additional one. It makes a massive difference

I ordered a desk and chair from Argos the other day for collection next week in their concession store at my local Sainsbury's (which are still open) as there were no desks or chairs available for home delivery in my area. Keep refreshing though as a couple of times I got to the check out and it said it was now out of stock, but then an hour or so later it was back again.

mizu · 29/03/2020 11:02

Not sure if I've attached the photo correctly but we made one from the airing cupboard door which we never got round to putting back up and a ton of books Grin

I ordered one from oak furnitureland last week. It was supposed to arrive on Thursday and only on the day did they say it was postponed. I’ve now got a new date for about 3 weeks time.

My point is that even if you’re given a delivery date, things are changing all the time.

Graffitiqueen · 29/03/2020 11:17

I ordered one from Argos yesterday.

stoptherideiwanttogetoff · 29/03/2020 11:25

Try Argos, the stores inside Sainsbury's are still open.

LIZS · 29/03/2020 11:26

Ikea was doing home delivery. Or check freecycle?

Rollercoaster1920 · 29/03/2020 11:32

Freecycle is temporarily suspended.

LittleLittleLittle · 29/03/2020 11:37

Desks:
eBay - lots of sellers sell new desks and use couriers to deliver them to you.
Argos - open inside Sainsburys and also on eBay as you can collect in Argos stores

Office Chairs:
eBay
An office supplier like Staples - check on their delivery times

Designjunkie · 29/03/2020 11:39

John Lewis have some and I bought one last week for my DS from Graham & Green. You could also try West Elm.

Darbs76 · 29/03/2020 11:41

Argos? We do have a desk but not a chair. Some of our team have been in to collect their chairs but I don’t think they are too happy about it

Nighttimefreedom · 29/03/2020 11:41

I've ordered one from mayfair which is coming on Wednesday.

Nighttimefreedom · 29/03/2020 11:41

Obviously I mean wayfair

BarbaraofSeville · 29/03/2020 11:42

That's very impressive mizu showoff

I suppose anyone who has all the tinned goods could do similar with those.

Can you ask if any of your friends/family have anything spare they could lend you? It's a shame you're not near me, as I have a basic table/desk from Ikea with detachable legs that we usually only use as an extra dining or picnic table if we have a crowd at Christmas and it spends the rest of the time stuck down the side of the wardrobe in the spare room.

I think one think that needs to come from all this is that people need to be a bit better at asking for help when they need it. So many people say 'I don't want to burden anyone' but if there's something simple like borrowing a spare desk, just about everyone would be glad to help and it's more efficient for people to ask for specifics as they need them.

I ordered something from Amazon on last Wednesday (25th), the delivery date was showing as April 29th. It arrived on Friday. So I would maybe take the chance on something from Amazon.

custardbear · 29/03/2020 11:59

I got a corner desk and quite a cheap gaming type chair from Argos (£85 and £65) which were delivered a week ago

Laura James.

mizu · 29/03/2020 12:11

Thanks Barb Wink the idea was pooh poohed by the rest of the family but I knew it would work. Just got to adjust the books a bit every now and again.

Needs must - we live in a tiny place and 3 of us were WFH on the dining table.

Our NDN got a desk on Facebook market place....

Arseit · 29/03/2020 12:15

Etsy - for local independent business. I’m in London and ordered one last week.

Sweatheart · 29/03/2020 12:16

The range

FairyBunnyAgain · 29/03/2020 12:28

I can recommend this one www.argos.co.uk/product/9308583
It was my panic buy as we went to WFH

FairyBunnyAgain · 29/03/2020 12:30

I have my office chair at home, but I also have dining chairs that would work.

FraterculaArctica · 29/03/2020 12:33

You shouldn't be getting stuff on Facebook marketplace, it's not an essential journey to pick stuff up.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/03/2020 12:41

It is if the OP needs a desk to work from home. Getting a desk to her house by whatever way whether by ordering off the internet, borrowing off friends or family or picking up a second hand one off FB is always going to involve 'a journey'. Call it the daily permitted exercise if it makes you feel better. No less essential than half the people in the supermarket who probably have food in the house, just not what they fancy eating that day.

So you just do that journey in the lowest risk way possible. The person giving the desk leaves it in their garden, the OP goes and picks it up - maybe wipe down before touching, and takes it home.
