Baby fell off armchair 😭

CobaltRose96 · 29/03/2020 09:26

Hi all.

DD is 12 months and very active and already running around!

She was sitting on the armchair in the living room. I was sitting there watching her, but she spotted a toy she liked on the floor and threw herself over the arm before I had a chance to grab her! It was only about a two/three foot fall, but she landed on the back of her head/neck Sad

She howled for about a minute but now seems totally fine. Eating toast, running around shouting, and laughing at the TV. I don’t know wether to call 111 just in case (she landed on a carpeted floor).

I feel so awful and can’t stop crying and shaking Sad

Try not to worry too much, this is the start of a lot of falls and bumps. Babies are really resilient and if she is back to her normal self already I wouldn't worry too much. Just keep an eye on her and see how she goes and ring 111 if you have concerns.

Marieo · 29/03/2020 09:29

Personally I would just keep an eye, and be kind to yourself. It happens, and i am sure it won't happen again.

DuploTower · 29/03/2020 09:29

Oh love, she's OK. Accidents happen. Don't be hard yourself - she's obviously OK.

Theresnobslikeshowb · 29/03/2020 09:33

She sounds fine- it’s surprising how much they bounce! Try not to worry yourself. If she does become quiet, sleepy, out of sorts for herself etc call then, but she sounds like she is okay.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 29/03/2020 09:33

Babies are quite resilient to falls off furniture, try not to worry, OP.

It's almost a right of passage.

BillywilliamV · 29/03/2020 09:35

Every child in the world has fallen off an armchair/ settee at some point. It is a right of passage.
Just keep an extra eye on her for a bit, she'll be fine!

badg3r · 29/03/2020 09:37

I am amazed you made it to 12 months without something similar happening! Keep an eye on them but I am sure it will be fine. Signs of concussion include excessive drowsiness and vomiting. But if they seem fine I would personally not call.

summerfruitssquash · 29/03/2020 09:38

My DD is doing the same OP but she does it when she has a tantrum (I know, at a year!! God knows what the terrible twos will be like) and she throws herself back from standing regularly, she did it yesterday. Please try not to worry too much they are more resilient than you think.

Think of the way they come down the birth canal or are taken out by c section? Both are really rough when you think about it and that’s at newborn!

Thinks to look out for are not being able to rouse her when she’s asleep (being sleepy isn’t generally a worry after a head injury as many people think)
Being sick 2 or 3 times...
Also the fact she cried straight away is a really good sign, it means she wasn’t knocked out.
Not a nurse but did a short stint as reception in an A & E and picked up a few things.

Whoareyoudududu · 29/03/2020 09:40

She will most likely be fine. Just keep a close eye on her and watch out for signs of concussion but honestly, all babies and toddlers fall sometimes- almost a right of passage!

Zombiemum1946 · 29/03/2020 09:44

Babies are sneaky little sods. Tried to catch mine and the nappy came off as she went head first off my knee. My stomach lurched, I screamed and she looked at me like I was a wuss. It happens, and she did worse as time went on.

LunaLula83 · 29/03/2020 09:45

🤣🤣 this post made me laugh. I was the same

MsChatterbox · 29/03/2020 09:48

I know how you feel. I've gone to A&E a couple of times with falls like this (by advice of 111). Make sure you look up the signs of what to look out for (vomiting etc). If you call 111 they will probably tell you to go because they like to be extra careful with little ones and bangs to the head. My son has taken about 4 bad ones to the exact same spot on his head... He's 2.5 now and doesn't seem to have any long lasting effects!!

JudyCoolibar · 29/03/2020 09:54

Rite of passage, people, not a right.

Babies are delightfully bouncy bendy little bundles of joy.

Keep n ye on her but I’m sure she’ll be fine.

Iknewyouwerewaitingforme · 29/03/2020 10:08

I bet there isn't a parent on here who didn't experience the horror of a baby falling off a sofa/chair/bed Shock
In my case it was DS 6 months who rolled off a bed and onto hard tiled floor when on holiday. Screamed his head off for ages, then all fine. Was terrified/mortified- but you live and learn through it.

heartsonacake · 29/03/2020 10:09

Don’t overreact, she’ll be fine. Babies are extremely resilient.

sixthtimelucky · 29/03/2020 10:14

Oh god I remember dropping my toddler son on a marble floor on holiday and the sickening bang as his head made contact. He was fine but it's a horrible feeling. Do keep an eye on her for the next few hours though, hospitals are still there for all emergencies.

Echo08 · 29/03/2020 10:17

OP my three were a total nightmare as babies , one rolled off the bed , one fell at my DS and cut just above their nose still has tiny scar , poor DS mortified and the other constantly tearing round still does now does martial arts 😁.They are all fine , one now in their early 20's .You do worry it is natural .When i got my last just picked them up and dusted them off Grin.First DC i was panicking each time they fell .Just keep close eye it is if they go excessively sleepy and vomit .We have all been there Flowers.

Thatnameistaken · 29/03/2020 10:22

If you want an example of really bad parenting, my DD fell face first out of a wheelbarrow at 10 months...turned my back for a second and bam. I felt bloody awful but she was fine after a cry. Try not to beat yourself up Flowers

babbi · 29/03/2020 10:23

OP .. congratulations on getting to 12 months without having the off the couch / chair / bed scenario ! You’ve aced her first year 😀
Seriously , please don’t beat yourself up , it happens to them all , they are very bouncy ..
Sounds like she’s absolutely fine but just keep an eye on her and be kind to yourself ...x

MouthBreathingRage · 29/03/2020 10:26

My younger one has been a nightmare for this. He rolled off the sofa and the bed by one, and now thinks it's hilarious fun. Hes now 2, and deliberately rolls off the sofa then shouts 'I'm ok!', before doing it again...

mollymoggs · 29/03/2020 10:28

Don't worry op, she'll be fine if she's acting fine. Just keep an eye.

Mine have fallen off beds on to tiled floor, fallen off their dad's shoulders, cartwheeled down the stairs, smashed head against stone garden ornament, and climbed over cot and fallen headfirst out just to think of a few. Reading this paragraph back makes me feel like an awful mother Hmm

I took dd1 in to a&E for the first fall which happened in the garden as I was chatting to neighbour. The doctors shined a light into her eyes to check responses and made her follow their fingers with her eyes. That's all they'd do so you could try then flllowing thing if it makes you feel better Thanks

I remember my neighbour thinking I was nuts as I was out of my mind with worry and she had three boys and thought it was nothing.

CobaltRose96 · 29/03/2020 10:36

Thank you all. She seems absolutely fine, has eaten since the fall and has spent the last few minutes running around shouting ‘No!’ and giggling Grin She’s gone for a sleep now but it is her usual nap time and she hasn’t been excessively drowsy. I’ll keep an eye but I’m feeling calmer and much less guilty now!
