To think that there are other amazing people out there too.

It goes without saying that the NHS are utterly astonishing, all the time, but especially today with everything that they are doing.

But it seems that there are others out there that aren't getting the recognition they deserve at this difficult time. The workers in the food chain - from the farms to the supermarkets and everyone in between like the delivery drivers and the manufacturers (of loo roll etc etc). The postal workers, the vets, the bin men, the charities etc etc. It feels like they are all keeping us going, but they rarely get a mention. I particularly feel for everyone working for or with the supermarkets. Hopefully most of us won't need to use the NHS's services at this dreadful time, but we all need food, and I just think all these thousands and thousands of people should be thanked.

If we have another "clap" as we did last week, some of my clapping will be for them.

I completely agree. I am a frontline NHS nurse, and have always (pretty much) been told how wonderful we, as a profession, are - which is lovely, and life affirming, and makes the shitty times at work bearable.

The supermarket workers, post office workers, parcel delivery people, rubbish collectors and many other vital workers - many of whom are not well paid - deserve an accolade. They are the true heroes.

It's sad to see signs in supermarkets imploring customers to be kind to their staff. They shouldn't have to do that.

Modestandatinybitsexy · 29/03/2020 09:16

I agree. Nurses aren't paid brilliantly but they're paid better than supermarket staff and delivery drivers. So many of them are fave to face with grumpy and rude customers and putting their health on the line for what's seen by most as a menial job.

ShanghaiDiva · 29/03/2020 09:20

Absolutely.
Hopefully most of will not need to use the NHS at this time, but we are all using supermarkets and getting our rubbish collected.

orangejuicer · 29/03/2020 09:21

Please, no more claps!

EmeraldShamrock · 29/03/2020 09:24

I hope in the future when all this is over it will give people a kinder attitude to these workers. The vitriolic comments thrown out on class threads in the past need to stop.
I hope people appreciate and understand each other more.
Coronavirus isn't fussy it can infect anyone.

parrotonmyshoulder · 29/03/2020 09:24

Who the hell cares about whether they’re clapped or not?

foodtoorder · 29/03/2020 09:30

Completely agree, I am frontline nhs and it really bugs me that my colleagues in social care and also care homes and community pharmacies don't get a look-in with the supermarket hours. They have to work through this mess too in much more restricted circumstances than usual and that's saying something!
That's without mentioning the farmers, transport workers etc.

ShanghaiDiva · 29/03/2020 09:35

The clapping part is not important.
Not being rude and abusive to supermarket employees because there’s no loo roll would be a good start...

Pipandmum · 29/03/2020 09:36

But how about the people that keep our power and water going? Things would descend into chaos for everyone if that all stopped.

BanginChoons · 29/03/2020 09:54

There are a lot if people keeping things running, and they all deserve recognition for it. However the NHS frontline workers who are coming into contact with people with this virus on a daily basis, often without correct pipe, day after day are in a league of their own.

AmelieTaylor · 29/03/2020 10:02

@orangejuicer

Please, no more claps!

Why not. I’m hoping it’s a weekly thing here.

Yes, there are a lot of people still
Keeping the country running and I’m in admiration of every single one of them.

I’m not sure how to get the message out that they are ALL hugely appreciated?

You’ll never stop wankers acting like wankers - unfortunately.

AmelieTaylor · 29/03/2020 10:03

I also agree with @BanginChoons

However the NHS frontline workers who are coming into contact with people with this virus on a daily basis, often without correct pipe, day after day are in a league of their own

Yes, supermarket workers , chemist worker, supply chain workers are all very commendable and we thank them so much for all they do.
However, Healthcare workers , are going to work each day , knowingly putting themselves in contact with this deadly virus. Sometimes without proper PPE .
They have at risk family members that they need to distance themselves from , they have kids they can't see during this time .
They are being very selfless .
A df of mine works in ICU , she said , she never asked to be a hero, she's just doing her job , but is petrified each day she goes to work. She has a dh and DC's plus DM and df that all need her . But she is putting patients ( strangers ) first . Now that deserves recognition.

puds11 · 29/03/2020 10:09

Maybe we can sack off the claps and replace it with a question to parliament as to whether the pay grade for frontline workers will be revised given the risk they are taking to ensure our safety.

orangejuicer · 29/03/2020 10:14

Lovely gesture but will become very irritating very quickly for those of us in urban areas trying to get kids to sleep. It also doesn't achieve an awful lot - i would imagine NHS workers would prefer better conditions and protective equipment than some random people clapping out the window.

Sorry, it just seems pointless to run it as a regular thing.

orangejuicer · 29/03/2020 10:15

I am grateful to the key workers out there honestly, just don't think clapping will achieve an awful lot!

Rupertpenrysmistress · 29/03/2020 10:48

I totally agree the lorry drivers, warehouse staff, supermarket workers who have customers who don't respect social distancing. Without these people this awful situation would be so much worse..

I am a frontline nurse and have to say myself and my colleagues were really touched by the clapping. It's often the small gestures. However perhaps the clap could be all keyworkers not just NHS staff.

LagunaBubbles · 29/03/2020 10:54

I'm a Nurse and the clapping made me far more emotional than I thought it would be. I think it's sad people think its pointless because it certainly gave a nice feeling that the country was doing the same thing at the same time.
I appreciate each and every person contributing but find it really sad that it's always a case of "but what about the care workers" etc. Everyone is important but at the end of the day the supermarket extra hours have been created to ensure there is enough healthy staff to work ventilators and look after patients on them. That's what it comes down to. They can't just identify those staff so it's easier to say all NHS.

CassidyStone · 29/03/2020 11:17

The children round our way loved clapping the NHS - everyone knows DH and I are both nurses - and they were whooping and cheering, shouting our names over the fence to make sure we heard. I felt a little bit like a minor celebrity for a few minutes Grin

However ALL keyworkers need recognition. Not everyone is at home watching Netflix, doing jigsaws, playing board games. Lots of people are working bloody hard, doing more hours than usual.

I've read the next public show of support is to shine a torch into the sky to remember those who have passed away from the virus. I'm not sure how I feel about that.

PinkiOcelot · 29/03/2020 11:21

I’ve said YABU, simply because I’m sick to death of hearing how amazing people are for doing their job. I’m NHS before anyone starts foaming at the mouth.

ghostyslovesheets · 29/03/2020 11:23

People rarely mention social workers, prison officers etc - still doing their jobs - still exposed to risk - little or no protection

Drogonssmile · 29/03/2020 11:24

I was waiting in the NHS queue this morning to go into our local massive Tesco at 9am. The store workers who had been stacking the shelves and prepping the store for however long before hand came out to make room and observe social distancing etc and all the NHSers in the queue applauded them as they all came out. It was lovely to be able to show some appreciation back Smile

carlotta43 · 29/03/2020 11:38

I work in a school. We've had a letter from the Minister for Education thanking the teachers. The rest of us - the Head's secretary, the receptionist, the admin lady, the school nurse, the caretaker, the cleaners, the kitchen staff, all of whom are in daily looking after the key workers' children - didn't get a mention. Without these people, who are paid pretty much minimum wage, the schools couldn't function. Sad Angry

Rowgtfc72 · 29/03/2020 12:21

Work in a factory, no special ppe. I'm lucky as i work opposite shifts to dh. Lots of my colleagues have been coming out at two to find supermarket shelves empty. We're putting the food there but unable to buy it. Some people also working six days a week. Makes it harder.
