To wonder who did all the stockpiling?

Now pictures are emerging of massive food waste...
Who are/were these people.
We have decent incomes as do many of our friends and none of us stockpiled...
We are full time workers with primary school age children.
So who bought all the stuff? And who the heck stockpiled soya milk?

Dunno. Wisney me though. I'm glad that I bought a big bag of toilet roll though as we're going through rolls like no body's business

I hate to see food waste though especially when it just needs better planning with freezing and cooking food. I never fling anything out!

CointreauVersial · 28/03/2020 19:41

I think everyone, although they won't admit it, bought a little bit more than usual. It all adds up.

FourTeaFallOut · 28/03/2020 19:43

Surely anyone who was buying food to prepare for the chaos to follow bought shelf stable food or freezer goods? So, I guess people buying in a blind panic would be the answer.

ShirleyPhallus · 28/03/2020 19:44

I saw those pictures and not entirely sure to believe them

Green bananas in a wheelie bin? Who would actually throw those away?

DollyPomPoms · 28/03/2020 19:46

I believe some of the pictures are from Derby, where they closed the university and students had to go home on the train...food therefore got thrown by landlords.

PinkiOcelot · 28/03/2020 19:47

I definitely didn’t and everyone I spoke to says they didn’t either. So God knows.

Ponoka7 · 28/03/2020 19:49

I wasn't sure if those pictures were believable, but the ones taken in the refuse place, were. The area has see through bags supplied and you could see the food in them.

I've heard people on the bus that they grabbed what they could and would probably bin some of it, later in the week.

Michelleoftheresistance · 28/03/2020 19:50

I'd love to know who stockpiled the soya milk. I've had to experiment with the non-dairy milks left, and trust me on this, coconut milk in tea......don't ever go there!

shinyredbus · 28/03/2020 19:50

Not me. I’m still trying to get antihistamines for my sons allergy!!

adagio · 28/03/2020 19:56

We didn’t stockpile, kind of unfortunate as I had no idea how much food 2 constantly starving under 7 kids and 2 grown adults wfh who are usually out 10 hours a day (buying lunch/breakfast/snacks at or near work) can actually get through in a week 😳

ItsAllTheDramaMickIJustLoveIt · 28/03/2020 20:00

Certainly wasn’t me- absolutely hate wasting food at the best of times.i don’t know anyone who’s admitted to stockpiling/panic buying.

ShirleyPhallus · 28/03/2020 20:00

Oh thanks @DollyPomPoms, that makes sense

Longdistance · 28/03/2020 20:02

We haven’t stockpiled. I just do a weekly shop, but last week I’d seen people buying multiple boxes of cereals and pasta. It was pathetic. There’s no need for it. I went shopping last night (we’ve been holed up since last week) and bought everything we need for the next ten days bar eggs and bog roll.

CodenameVillanelle · 28/03/2020 20:03

I didn't stockpile but I bought a little more than I usually would in both my last weekly shops (had slots booked before it went mental)
It's people doing that which has caused the empty shelves unfortunately. An average of an extra £6 pw per family.

Worriedmom2020 · 28/03/2020 20:03

I saw those photos, the green bananas and fish cakes...
A bin man took them, on his route in Coventry.

wibblewobblejiggle · 28/03/2020 20:04

I stock pile Oat Milk. But I've been doing that for ages. We go through at least one a day.

DarklyDreamingDexter · 28/03/2020 20:04

Well I know of one, my boss, who told me he’d bought the last freezer in Britain (his 4th) to house the 2 month’s worth of food he’d bought.

GrumpyHoonMain · 28/03/2020 20:06

The photos were taken around the university Halls in Derby but people do waste a lot of food any way - I imagine panic buying would make the waste even worse

HeIsAVeryBadBoy · 28/03/2020 20:12

What pictures? Link?

joystir59 · 28/03/2020 20:16

I normally keep a good stock in of certain things but admit I've bought a bit extra of things like meat, quorn, Ibuprofen, paracetamol, oat milk, toilet paper, pasta, canned goods, dog food, dried fruit and will buy some more legumes, flour and yeast. Why? There are no slots for online shopping for weeks. I'm looking after elderly resident mil and very vulnerable partner. I do not want to go shopping any more than absolutely essential. OH can only eat certain things because of chemo. So I've done extra shopping for months now and a really hefty shop this week. Because I really can't afford to go down with any illness and I really can't afford to bring any illness home.

joystir59 · 28/03/2020 20:16

Nothing will be wasted.

BubblyBarbara · 28/03/2020 20:17

I did but only idiots stockpile perishable goods. Rice, long life milk, nappies, peanut butter and other forms of non perishable protein here!

pjmask · 28/03/2020 20:17

Pictures spreading more hate, just what we need. I've just seen hate on Facebook with someone saying they just returned from my local Morrisons and it was a battle zone, people shoving elderly out of their way, empty shelves. I was there 30 minutes ago, all lies. It was empty, people were keeping their distance, shelves well stocked. Why people are trying to bait each other I do not understand.

joystir59 · 28/03/2020 20:17

Paracetamol and Ibuprofen both used by OH to control cancer pain and inflammation. Can't afford to run out of them.

madcatladyforever · 28/03/2020 20:19

I bought three long life soya milks because I like it on my wheat crunchies in the morning but I don't think that could be classed as stockpiling. Its disgusting in coffee.
