To wonder who did all the stockpiling?

Now pictures are emerging of massive food waste...
Who are/were these people.
We have decent incomes as do many of our friends and none of us stockpiled...
We are full time workers with primary school age children.
So who bought all the stuff? And who the heck stockpiled soya milk?

I do not actually think stockpiling was the problem
The issue was that much of the food goes to catering outlets, canteens and the like. Suddenly with bars, pubs and food outlets closed all that food has had to be re-directed to the household chain.
Not an easy task.

Actually, preppers buying a bit extra in the months ahead of this would have prompted the just in time system to buy more into shops. When preppers stopped buying when it went a bit bonkers in the shops, some of that extra was available for those who were not able to prep ahead of time. eg, my extra two boxes of soya milk, and the four for the week she uses would have been available to someone else.

most people were not selfish and buying a trolley full of pasta. most were just buying a couple of extra. that couple of extra across lots of people adds up to a whole load.

I work in a supermarket and was really surprised to see all the fresh fruit and vegetables get stripped out in the last week before lockdown. The pasta and loo rolls and flour I understood. I don't know. I heard that people were buying freezers so maybe they were batch cooking with it. It would be sickening if it all got thrown out. We are self isolating now (though don't think we have got it) and I pretty much think about food all the time. We're not in a bad situation but I am pretty jel of those with their chest freezers full

I usually buy DS's soya milk every few weeks I buy 9 at a time (box of eight) and one to go through the till). There are usually dozens of boxes. Non to be had for weeks.

All the people I know who work full time have struggled to get basics. Both my son and I have walked into a supermarket after 7 pm to find the shelves stripped.

Not exactly sure who had been stockpiling,

Oldraver · 29/03/2020 12:00

Oh dear. I did buy two boxes of cereal as they were £1 each. I also bought some ready meals. To be honest I think lots of people put a few items extra in

But the shops near me looked like locusts had been in

Sh05 · 29/03/2020 12:06

If those pictures are true then some people are real idiots. Why didn't they freeze the chicken, bread etc? Who throws green bananas away?
Or if you don't have freezer space why not prioritize foods that have a shorter shelf life?
Unless of course they just bought sooo much without really knowing what to do with it

@EmmaBridgewater20

This thread and the problems we now face food supply wise isn’t about people who always buy offers and always have a well stocked freezer, supermarkets know who those customers are and they will be accounted for in their forecasting. The OP confirmed that too. You’re not the problem if you always shop like that

So why have a go at Minty Mabel who has been prepping since a hard Brexit was forecast? You may have a PhD in supply chains but you’re not very logical.

And I’m not your love.

SerenDippitty · 29/03/2020 12:09

We didn’t stockpile. We last did a big supermarket shop three weeks ago, buying mostly frozen/freezable stuff and some tins. No more than 2 of anything. Since then we’ve just being walking round to our local small co op and getting what fresh stuff they had.

CeriseClementine · 29/03/2020 15:23

Que all the bullshit excuses that will now follow from people with their 'excuses' as to why they had to buy 'extra'. My DM is ill, my DS has SEN, my DH works long hours!!! Everyone has to eat to stay alive - you are not any different to any other human-being.

I don't have or need any excuses. I stockpiled a months worth of non-perishable foods because I want to safeguard my family and ensure we can all eat if we feel the need to completely lockdown for a few weeks.

To me, my family are more important than yours or anyone else. Surely you feel the same? Surely everyone does? I can't prep for the whole of the UK but I can prep for my own which is what I did.

What is this word 'que'?

Qué?

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 29/03/2020 18:56

It sounds little when people say "Oh, it's like £15 per person per week extra. So no one actually really stockpiled".
We didn't buy a thing extra. Some had our £60 quid (3 weeks 2 people). I know few more like this. I am sure everyone dies. So in the end it's not mere £15 a person extra. Plus that 15 counts a whole population of UK. Whole 66 million. So that's another issue with that number.
In reality someone spend nothing extra, few spend few pounds extra and some spend hundreds extra

summertimehere · 29/03/2020 19:03

My husband did I’m here to dob him in 😂 I’ve told him not to mention groceries or shopping for a long time

YouTheCat · 29/03/2020 19:22

I spent about an extra fiver on the shopping two weeks ago (for three adults). I ordered a large pack of loo roll from Amazon as 2 rolls was just not going to be enough and there was none at all in several different shops.

I know someone (not a friend) who spent £250 on toilet roll 3 weeks ago. I always thought he was a selfish twat and that just confirmed it.
