this sort of thing makes me reflect on the value of things we take for granted.
for example we can only appreciate the value of education, in the widest sense, when we see what the absence of it looks like.
part of any education is to make us socially aware and responsible as part of society, with respect for the norms and values of that society.
more considerate of others, taking turns, sharing, giving everyone a fair chance. the alternative is rampant individualism where might is right, and i take what i want because i can, a fascist approach.
civilisation is more than a veneer of respectability. it is the rule of law, a sense of justice, an aspiration to fairness. and compassion. and enough self-restraint to listen and learn in what way we might be harming others; the nurturing of empathy. takes an act of will, and good direction. that is what i mean by education.
this person's way of life and background has not fitted him for these grown-up accomplishments.
