We all need to switch off?

Ghgtyhhd · 28/03/2020 14:33

We need to know what's happening. We need to make sure we know the rules and where we are at but. .... It's so important people try and forget for a while. My Facebook newsfeed is absolutely covered in tragic deaths, NHS posts, news reports, lockdown tips, local support groups, people ranting about supermarkets (quite rightly). It was making me feel stressed. I wasn't sleeping great.

Yesterday after tea I put grease on. (Film) my kids were dancing about to the music and it actually lifted me massively. Such a simple thing but it just made me switch off from the misery.

I think we all need a breather? I usually take a good bashing for 99% of what I post on aibu? But..... If anyone is struggling with the media. I do recommend putting on your music. Watching your favourite films. Having a family game day. Look through old holiday pictures and plan what you will do next year. I know it's hard but we need to keep sane.

Has anyone else got any suggestions for people? There's lots of great ideas for kids. But we also need to remember ourselves a little and how to switch off.

I can't remember the last time I watched the news, or looked at the BBC app on my phone. I have only looked at specific accounts on Twitter and have hidden the Coronavirus threads on Mumsnet.

I know what I have to do to keep safe and am doing it.

I know what I need to know to keep my anxiety and MH manageable, all the other stuff can do one. I don't need or want to know how bad it is.

Ghgtyhhd · 28/03/2020 14:40

I agree with you. I think people are trapped in the middle of it. Because we have little control then ideally we need to look after our own minds and be happy. Light hearted comedy and music is my way of relaxing so as of today I am trying to stick to positive things. No more news.

Busy hands, busy minds and all that.

Chocolatecake12 · 28/03/2020 14:45

Yes I absolutely agree. Really need to keep anxieties at bay and switch off for a while.
I look at the news in the morning. Go to work (nhs admin) then get home shower and watch the 5pm update. Then after dinner I’m trying not to look at anymore news or read my works whatsapp group messages. I’m trying to watch some comedy, or a film and spend some time with my children and switch off from it all. Until the next day.

Notonmyshift · 28/03/2020 14:47

I'm actually only watching news once a day and that's it.
I'm enjoying the slower pace of life at the moment and we are just plodding along doing things to amuse ourselves.

joystir59 · 28/03/2020 14:52

Binge watched Masterchef

Ghgtyhhd · 28/03/2020 14:54

Yesssss. So pleased to see others are doing the same now.

Look after yourselves. Highly recommended abit of grease lightening hahaha.

Don't let this virus take away our happiness aswel as everything else.

It is Facebook you need to switch off

RhinestoneCowgirl · 28/03/2020 14:56

Wizard of Oz is on Netflix... Very comforting. And we got Duplo down from the loft (youngest is 11yrs)

Falangalangadingdang · 28/03/2020 14:57

I just said on another thread, I'm taking a Facebook break and it would appear I'm not alone.

Currently watching Madagascar 2 whilst MNetting and considering doing my daily walk/jog on the treadmill but that means taking my comfy pyjamas off Grin

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 28/03/2020 14:58

I’ve switched off my WhatsApp and haven’t looked at the news for around 4 days now. I wasn’t sleeping and was having heart palpitations!
I’ve told dh to only tell me if it’s something I absolutely need to know.

At the end of the day if I’m going to get it and die, that’s gonna happen whether I spend my last weeks/months screwed up with panic and anxiety or oblivious and trying to live as happily and normally as possible. Also for my dc’s sake I want to be in the best possible mental health.

Ghgtyhhd · 28/03/2020 15:00

I'm definitely keeping off Facebook today.

We all need to treasure our families and homes right now. We've been given this time and we should use it to read, watch tele, watch comedy shows and enjoy music and games.

Russel Howard and bad education are good netflix ones too.

Stranger things and you (not comedies)

Anyone got any netflix suggestions for people? Maybe we can make this thread full of positives 😊

Schitts Creek on Netflix. I'm watching from the start again.

cactus2020 · 28/03/2020 15:15

So wise. I've felt way better since limiting what I read (yes, including the MN Corona thread which can do your head in). Keep to.one or two BBC updates and focus on routine, fun, small pleasures, contacting someone every day in a positive way. So right BetteDavis... Panic serves noone well.

Farheatarse · 28/03/2020 15:18

I’ve hidden the corona topic, was too much bombardment. I’m not on Facebook, and have minimal contacts on WhatsApp. I watch the news when I want to, it’s not constantly on.

I know what I need to do, what the general situation is, I don’t need endless statistics, horror stories, reminders, scaremongering.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 28/03/2020 15:28

if you're binge watching Spooks on iPlayer, give series 2 episode 5 a miss.

I prefer keeping up with reliable news sources - I feel more comfortable if i am doing all I can to stay well-informed.

Ghgtyhhd · 28/03/2020 15:30

It's becoming so draining. I feel like I can't take weeks more of the way I've been this week.

As someone has said worrying about what might happen is a waste. We need to still make the best of this year and summer. Especially to keep our kids feeling positive. We hopefully can teach them in a crap situation we can be calm and still be happy at home.

As long as we are home we are safe. I'm trying to remember all those rainy school runs and long working winters when I wished I could be home all day lol.

Other than Tele what else have you done? I've painted my fences. I need to do another coat. I've also got kitchen paint.

I love being given permission to stay at home. Life has become very simple and time has stretched out.

Ghgtyhhd · 28/03/2020 16:02

It's a great time to sort out your wardrobes and cupboards too. There's never any time for these jobs. I'm sorting the kids toys out this afternoon. It's great to have chance to clear out stuff

Personally I’ve been taking NAC for my cough, which has now gone as it’s brilliant for this. What I forgot is that it’s also great for serotonin levels. I feel amazing and very calm. I’m struggling to relate to the anxiety right now. I’d highly recommend it. Dirt cheap too! Just catching up on the walking dead...

freakydeaky · 28/03/2020 16:12

Mummyoflittledragon what is NAC please? 😊

Mummyoflittledragon · 28/03/2020 17:33

This is NAC and some of the benefits. www.healthline.com/nutrition/nac-benefits#section1

This specifically about mood. www.psychologytoday.com/gb/blog/heal-your-brain/201810/nac-the-amino-acid-turns-psychiatry-its-head

Cheap as chips on amazon. But beware the long lead times as they are prioritising essentials and this possibly won’t be seen as such. It tastes of nothing tablet form. The cheapest way (and from my current state of zen the best way) is in powder. This is available on amazon or direct from the distributor www.bulkpowders.co.uk/n-acetyl-l-cysteine-nac.html.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 28/03/2020 22:19

This thread was a really good prompt for me today to hide some of the corona related groups on social media, scroll through the crafty ones instead, and have some downtime with a family movie.

SquashedSpring · 28/03/2020 22:39

I agree with you, I've been constantly reading the news/google/social media all day and most of the night and it's not doing me any good at all. I'm worrying myself quite literally sick and obsessing about everything.

There are so many things that I could do with the DC or that need doing in the house that I never have time to do. Now would be an ideal time, but instead I'm making myself ill by constantly looking this screen.

Thank you for your post Ghgtyhhd sometimes you need someone on the outside to point out where you're going wrong. Tomorrow I'm going to try really hard to switch off, or at least limit myself to 30 minutes screentime to keep up with the news.
