'Stay local to exercise' is rubbish

Taking public transport to start your exercise is obviously counterproductive.

Driving to somewhere where loads of other people are also going to exercise is not exactly ideal.

Driving to somewhere in the middle of nowhere to go for a walk? Not only is that perfectly safe, I'm going to assert that it's BETTER than walking from your house, especially if you live in a built-up area.

AIBU? And if I'm being U - why? How am I endangering anyone by going out to the countryside by car instead of walking round my town?

It will be law soon enough anyway.

Toseland · 27/03/2020 20:39

a) setting a bad example to others less intelligent or careful than yourself
b) did you see the news regarding the National trust recently?
c) stay home or v near home
d) take pressure off emergency services on the roads + in hospitals
d) in future choose to live somewhere with nice walks nearby

ShootsFruitAndLeaves · 27/03/2020 20:39

They do if they want to avoid being utter cunts

Nothing to do with that. People going to the park and having a BBQ are being cunts.

People ignoring the police making their non-science-based, not-based-in-law, contrary-to-official-advice pronouncements, and driving a mile or two to somewhere quieter than their home are not being cunts at all.

This really isn't hard to understand.

ShootsFruitAndLeaves · 27/03/2020 20:40

d) in future choose to live somewhere with nice walks nearby

don't be so ridiculous

Teateaandmoretea · 27/03/2020 20:41

So yes I think that will increase the risk of my mum getting infected

Your mum could be infected Confused

Theultimatecatlady · 27/03/2020 20:42

What about disabled people? My brother in law has md and can’t walk very well up
Hills so he usually drives out of town
somewhere flat to walk their dog. It’s better for him at the moment to drive somewhere rural where he is less likely to meet anyone and exercise safely.

Teateaandmoretea · 27/03/2020 20:42

@shootsfruitsandleaves exactly

exLtEveDallas · 27/03/2020 20:43

They do if they want to avoid being utter cunts
But who cares if someone else thinks they are a cunt? That’s not even a consideration.

If driving for 5 mins to open countryside to exercise/walk the dog in isolation rather than on crowded streets, is going to spread CV19 (and tbh I’m not sure how it would) then Public Health need to say that and the actual Law needs to be reworded to incorporate that.

Calling someone who does that a cunt isn’t going to stop them. You need a better tactic than that.

ShootsFruitAndLeaves · 27/03/2020 20:44

Just saw someone say this on another thread:

"Stay home unless it is essential to go out"
not
"go out if you personally think it is not harmful"

Wrong.

It's 'without reasonable excuse'

For most people it's not essential to go out for exercise. It is however better to get daily exercise than not.

What's the point of coming up with your own version of what you think others should do? The rules are clear - stay at home unless you have a reasonable excuse to go out. Exercise is a reasonable excuse. Having a picnic in the park is not.

Snaketime · 27/03/2020 20:44

I live in the countryside and I have gotten to the point I really can't be arsed to explain anymore just STAY AT HOME!!!

GinnyStrupac · 27/03/2020 20:45

Exercise is allowed and essential, for mental and physical health, but travelling to get it is not.

The point in the new emergency law is reasonable excuse.

Can you justify it is reasonable to drive miles to exercise when the widely available published government and public health guidelines are strongly advising us all to stay local and to minimise the time spent away from home?

Alialialiali · 27/03/2020 20:46

lol, I never believed a lockdown would work anyway. The sooner we all just give up pretending this will work, the better.
I mean, OP has at least posted on here. There will be thousands if not hundreds of thousands doing what they please.

LittleRootie · 27/03/2020 20:46

The point is that the govt and public health experts have decided on a policy

And the policy does not forbid people driving a short distance to exercise in a less busy spot. Govt ministers have confirmed that this is reasonable, the updated advice also does not forbid it.

If we all do as we think best for us as individuals and ignore the rules, then there would be chaos
Any chaos in my area has so far been caused by police stopping people, resulting in traffic jams and the undermining of people's understanding of these rules.

Miljea · 27/03/2020 20:46

People now 'feel the need' to go out now, as opposed to 'before', because the entire family is cooped up, 24/7, in some of the smallest m/person in the civilised world. Thanks, Tories, in thrall to wealthy housing developer donors.

Cohle · 27/03/2020 20:46

Calling someone who does that a cunt isn’t going to stop them. You need a better tactic than that.

If the thought of killing people isn't enough to keep someone at home, then nothing I say is.

I am truly disgusted by the attitude of some people though. It's beyond belief.

ThePants999 · 27/03/2020 20:46

I love it. I say "Let's see some actual critical thinking please", and it's almost immediately followed by four consecutive posts telling me to just do what I'm told with not a hint of argument as to why the rules are sensible.

I'll say this one final time. This thread is not "should I obey the rules or disregard them?" This thread is "are the rules GOOD rules?" If you post to say, effectively, "the rules are the rules", you are wasting everyone's time.

If you think it’s risky walking from your house because of people then don’t leave the house . Stay at Home. As asked to.

That’s the government line. Stay At Home.

Of course driving to somewhere in the country for fresh air carries less risk. Except last week literally EVERYONE had the same idea and out in the sun they all went. Loads on bikes, loads of cars on unsuitabke roads and loads of ramblers. And then the message is “fuck it” let’s carry on as normal. And we are back to spreading it.

Just Stay At Home

Scarletoharaseyebrows · 27/03/2020 20:48

shoots and you reckon that was someone local?

nannieann · 27/03/2020 20:48

As others have said, you shouldn't be walking in the countryside away from home. If you are carrying the virus, you may leave it on gates or stiles for the next person who comes along to pick up. The virus hangs around on surfaces for a long time. Alternatively. you may pick the virus up after someone else has left it there. I haven't seen anyone disinfecting each gate or stile they go through. Surely people remember foot and mouth and how it spread so easily?
Incidentally, driving somewhere pretty and sitting in your car having a picnic or reading the paper is not exercise. Your car doesn't need the exercise. Your exercise needs can be met either inside your home or in close proximity to it. STAY AT HOME.

Miljea · 27/03/2020 20:48

I live in the countryside and I have gotten to the point I really can't be arsed to explain anymore just STAY AT HOME!!!

The irony.

madcatladyforever · 27/03/2020 20:49

Who is going to clean up the mess if you crash the car or have an accident.
I'm NHS frontline spending the next few days going visiting people at home with serious health conditions and I'm sick of masses of people on the road driving to their bloody exercise places making my day hours longer than it should be.
Stay ay home for ff's sake - it isn't all about you.

Pluckedpencil · 27/03/2020 20:50

At least you are allowed out. Here in Italy I have to stay within 200m of my house even to walk the dog. I live in the middle of nowhere. Literally in the middle of a mountain range. It's 40 minutes to any kind of built up city. It's the most fucking ridiculous rule ever and so bloody bad for people's mental health. I have no desire to see anyone. I want to go where there is not a soul. My kids have been in the house three weeks straight. We really really need to go for a walk but I think it may be at least another month before we're allowed. It's bad.

ConstanceSalinger · 27/03/2020 20:50

Our local village has lovely woods. On Sunday there were more people walking their dogs than has been seen in years. Local guy actually put up a sign saying please, leave the area for the locals, who now cannot leave their home because of all the people from the neighbouring towns. You should see the shit show on Facebook because of it!

madcatladyforever · 27/03/2020 20:52

Nearly all clinics have become home visits now and if you live in a beauty spot like I do you're struggling to find parking or get down country roads and running over flipping dog walkers on every bend.

Cohle · 27/03/2020 20:52

Why are people so arrogant as to think government advice has to be personally justified to them? Watch the bloody press conferences like everyone else and do what you're told. You don't know better than public health experts just because you fancy a stroll.
