'Stay local to exercise' is rubbish

Taking public transport to start your exercise is obviously counterproductive.

Driving to somewhere where loads of other people are also going to exercise is not exactly ideal.

Driving to somewhere in the middle of nowhere to go for a walk? Not only is that perfectly safe, I'm going to assert that it's BETTER than walking from your house, especially if you live in a built-up area.

AIBU? And if I'm being U - why? How am I endangering anyone by going out to the countryside by car instead of walking round my town?

Not an essential journey. Stay at home.

ThePants999 · 27/03/2020 20:25

If you post telling me that I need to stay local to minimise the spread of the virus, and you need to tell me why walking past dozens of people following that advice in an urban area is better for minimising the spread than walking past none, or maybe one, in a large park or a public right of way. Let's see some actual critical thinking please.

We should be helping each other and pulling together, not turning on each other.

^^couldnt agree more.

We need to follow the guidance and thank people for doing that rather than carping at each other making up rules online.

People are allowed to exercise for good reason. It should be local to where they live within reason. So driving a short distance is reasonable, I don't need to personally but I'm lucky.

SleightOfMind · 27/03/2020 20:27

We’re lucky enough to live 2 mins walk from a lovely spot to walk dogs & DC but it’s been gradually filling up all week.
On Weds, they decided to close the car parks so only people who arrived on foot/bike could gain access.
People parked all over the grass and road outside the gates. It was crazy.
If this doesn’t stop, there’ll be a much harsher lockdown for us all.

Teateaandmoretea · 27/03/2020 20:27

pants just use common sense. Posting on here to ask the question in itself is a lack of critical thinking skills 🤷🏻‍♀️

Cohle · 27/03/2020 20:28

You need to stay local because the fucking government has told you to, on the advice of numerous public health experts.

Head. Desk.

BigChocFrenzy · 27/03/2020 20:29

YABU

The point is that the govt and public health experts have decided on a policy

and they have the means to get you fined if you ignore this

We all probably think some law or govt policy is daft, whether it be wrt driving , drugs, leaving kids alone etc

If we all do as we think best for us as individuals and ignore the rules,
then there would be chaos

x 100 is a pandemic

adaline · 27/03/2020 20:30

How about you stay local because the bloody government has told you to do so?

Why the fuck is it so hard to comprehend? Stay at home.

Baboomtsk · 27/03/2020 20:30

I think it would make it very difficult to police non essential journeys if lots of people were driving about all over the place for walks and exercise.

There may well be individual instances where the risk is minimal but if it was allowed as a general rule, social distancing would go out the window, as we saw last weekend.

I live on a busy street in a large city. There are quite a few people out getting their exercise as obviously people are home rather than at work, school etc...

Nonetheless, it's not too difficult to stay 2 metres from others if you pay attention.

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 27/03/2020 20:31

I refer the honourable lady to the answer I gave a few minutes ago Grin

Many of the replies are not rooted in reason. They have at their heart an irrational feeling that we need to "clamp down".

Stripeyfrog · 27/03/2020 20:31

I live in a town but surrounded by countryside. My normal walking or running routes down footpaths etc are often busier than normal because people want a "nice" walk or go somewhere where they can take a dog off a lead. I did a pretty boring run round the streets and town centre at 7pm tonight and barely saw a soul.

Bowerbird5 · 27/03/2020 20:31

Loads of people turned up at the Lakes last weekend. Windermere was like a summer day in high tourist season. The police have closed the Lakes.
Fair enough if people want to go from London to their holiday cottage BUT stay there, don't walk about and infect all the people that live there. Same goes for the Highlands. My sister said loads of people went there last weekend. They had no cases in Moray just watch the numbers go up in a couple of weeks. I have seen loads of people in our village never been seen here before. Suddenly people are coming here and exercise putting locals at risk. There are lots of people in there eighties and nineties here. The farmers in their eighties are still helping put food on your table and milk on your breakfast please think first!

exLtEveDallas · 27/03/2020 20:33

People only need to comply with the law, not with advice. The law is screenshot. It doesn’t mention a limit to the number of times you can leave the house, nor how long for or how far away. Police forces that are saying otherwise are making things worse, because more people will rebel against them.

'Stay local to exercise' is rubbish
BigChocFrenzy · 27/03/2020 20:33

If people don't follow the govt rules / advice, then they'll just make harder rules,
we've seen this
e.g. they could ban all outside exercise if people keep ignoring the rules

Worse still, if the pandemic gets out of control, apart from the tragedy of the deaths,
is that the lockdown will be extended for weeks / months more
and the economy will be even more badly damaged than it is

ShootsFruitAndLeaves · 27/03/2020 20:34

Winter Hill was on fire again this afternoon. Firefighters in their droves having to put out fires in the beautiful countryside on my doorstep because people wanted to come for a drive.

No, it was because people had a BBQ.

An actual BBQ.

Not a drive.

BigChocFrenzy · 27/03/2020 20:34

If the police inform the govt that people are ignoring advice, then the law is likely to be tightened further
to actually make more things illegal

Nanny0gg · 27/03/2020 20:35

But if one does that then 100 do it. If hundreds do it then thousands then do it. With people driving here there and everywhere people begin to become lax about the rules and....that's where the rules break down.

^^This

Cohle · 27/03/2020 20:36

People only need to comply with the law, not with advice.

They do if they want to avoid being utter cunts. We are in the middle of a global pandemic. People are dying.

BigChocFrenzy · 27/03/2020 20:36

The problem is that one individual may use their common sense,
but millions of people going out for a drive to somewhere more interesting are going to include a lot of idiots too

Relying on common sense doesn't work in a pandemic

Ethelfleda · 27/03/2020 20:36

Just saw someone say this on another thread:

"Stay home unless it is essential to go out"
not
"go out if you personally think it is not harmful"

Teateaandmoretea · 27/03/2020 20:36

But if one does that then 100 do it. If hundreds do it then thousands then do it. With people driving here there and everywhere people begin to become lax about the rules and....that's where the rules break down.

No... most people are trying to do the right thing.

Plus have you seen the weather forecast for Sunday? That'll sort them out.

Bookoffacts · 27/03/2020 20:38

If everyone travels to the local.parks and beauty spots and woods it will be like last weekend again.
THIS IS NOT A PUBLIC HOLIDAY
Stay home stay safe. Nearly 1000 people died in Italy today

coldwarenigma · 27/03/2020 20:38

I'm just amazed at how many people suddenly feel the need to go out walking/cycling/running now there are restrictions in place. Families all out etc. Before all this you knew they were firmly sat on the sofa with a pizza and a playstation. Forbidden fruit.

Out with ddog for our walk a day I see some of the usual walkers with their ddogs, others I have never seen before and I have lived here 18 years.

Rhea1981 · 27/03/2020 20:39

My mum lives in the middle of nowhere. She walks her dogs around the fields and usually never sees another soul but said today while out she saw several other people. I said its probably people from the towns driving to their remote fields for a walk. So yes I think that will increase the risk of my mum getting infected. They're walking around and touching gates to enter fields so could potentially be leaving the virus on the gates and anything else they touch. I think people should just stick to their own area.

Alialialiali · 27/03/2020 20:39

Well, if everyone's going to do what they think is right then we can kiss the lockdown goodbye

1)increase in traffic. ie. back to normal when ambulances need it to be clear
2)how do you know everyone's not going to end up at the same place
3)what happens if you need food/toilet etc people are just going to be going everywhere doing everything.
4)Emergencies. now you have nutcases going all sorts of remote places, getting in trouble and then 999 has to take care of them

We have the lockdown allow the nhs to cope with emergencies. Part of that is to keep things quiet and limit emergencies
