'Stay local to exercise' is rubbish

Taking public transport to start your exercise is obviously counterproductive.

Driving to somewhere where loads of other people are also going to exercise is not exactly ideal.

Driving to somewhere in the middle of nowhere to go for a walk? Not only is that perfectly safe, I'm going to assert that it's BETTER than walking from your house, especially if you live in a built-up area.

AIBU? And if I'm being U - why? How am I endangering anyone by going out to the countryside by car instead of walking round my town?

I live in one of this areas that are “quiet” and people drive to for a walk. It’s no longer quiet because of all the extra people and quite frankly if you don’t know what two metres looks like stay at home.

Thewarrenerswife · 28/03/2020 21:58

What the police are trying to enforce is not within their powers. The PM and Matt Hancock both said in separate press briefings that it is okay to drive a reasonable short distance to walk your dog or exercise, providing social distancing guidance is observed and the are isn’t already crowded. It’s a novelty now, but when those who live in built up areas have been walking the same loop everyday for a couple more weeks, then you’ll realise why the government haven’t brought in these measures yet. Look at Italy. Fighting, social disobedience, revolution groups gathering momentum. When isolation fatigue sets in, those of us who drive to open spaces to walk now, will be glad we did.

Stay at home

Yes, it's going to be a long haul warreners

OptimisticSix · 28/03/2020 22:22

YANBU. I'm lucky to live somewhere quiet, but I have a big enough bgarden that I haven't been going out... However if you live somewhere busier it makes sense to me that you go elsewhere. I guess it's just cos its harder to pice if people are driving around 😁

Glittersparkle76 · 28/03/2020 22:26

Why do people find it so bloody hard to just STAY AT HOME??,firget exercise, the world wont end if people dont exercise for a few weeks.I bet all these people exercising didn't bother before all this kicked off,now all of a sudden everyone wants to,just STAY AT HOME FGS!!,ITS NOT HARD.

Iggly · 28/03/2020 22:27

There will be a lot more visitors because people have more free time now. Not just people rediscovering or discovering exercise for the first time.

Isn’t that obvious?

I’m torn on this one. I can see that actually there are people cooped up in tiny flats with no outside space. Now unless people have lived that life with say, small kids, for weeks on end - surely it’s not hard to see why people may need to drive somewhere for their sanity?

We have a beauty spot 10 mins down the road and we were discussing whether we can can there. Apparently not according to Twitter which is a crying shame - because actually not many live within walking distance of it hence all the car parks.

But personally I’m trying to avoid taking the kids out except for pavement walks and certainly not on bikes because it’s near impossible to maintain 2m distance. They don’t even know what 2m is without a tape measure.

I just feel sad about the whole thing and wish people were more empathetic about other people’s actions.

veryverytiredmummy · 28/03/2020 22:27

Because people see you driving your car and think of they're doing that, I'm doing that. The lock down only works because everyone feels pressured to do it. A few people not doing it encourages a few more not to do it and that few more encourage even more. It's like those graphics of the virus spreading. Your little trip is the first case of CV on the graphic. Brie you know it you've got a 'pandemic' of people breaking the lockdown.

veryverytiredmummy · 28/03/2020 22:28

Before, not brie. At home self isolating and running out of food!

TheLadyAnneNeville · 28/03/2020 22:29

@Glittersparkle76 have you even considered that for some people “home” is not their safe place?

If only it were that simple.

Thesnacklady · 28/03/2020 22:30

I understand how you feel and the reasoning behind why you might think it’s safer, but in this situation it’s not just about you not getting the virus it’s about not spreading it to areas that are unaffected.

Coming out of an area that has a high infection rate moving out to somewhere where it isn’t just spreads it further.

People are underestimating how contagious this virus is.

Glittersparkle76 · 28/03/2020 22:33

People seem to think the rules don't apply to them so try to bend them by 'exercising.Free time or no free time,we have been put on lockdown for a bloody good reason, not because the government want to torture everyone by keeping them in.Why can't people just do as they are asked?

StepAwayFromGoogle · 28/03/2020 22:35

@Glittersparkle76 - do you have children? It really isn't that easy to stay at home and not leave the house AT ALL week after week after week with a five year old and a two year old.

OwlBeThere · 28/03/2020 22:37

@Glittersparkle76 because people’s mental health also matters. It’s not for exercise as much as staying mentally healthy in hard times.

Glittersparkle76 · 28/03/2020 22:37

@theladyannneville
I sympathise with those whose home isn't their safe place but does that justify putting others at risk of a deadly virus?.My son has Cancer so naturally am very worried about him contracting this Virus,it's such a simple thing to do for people to slow down the spread but as usual people think the rules don't apply to them.

StepAwayFromGoogle · 28/03/2020 22:38

Also, people ARE doing as asked. They are allowed to exercise. They are allowed to drive a short distance to exercise. You seem to be making up your own rules.

Glittersparkle76 · 28/03/2020 22:39

@StepAwayFromGoogle
Yes I do have children,I have 3,one who is battling Cancer,so forgive me if I can't justify a reason for going out when staying home protects other vulnerable people.

derxa · 28/03/2020 22:40

I live in a rural area and we have had a huge influx of walkers, mountain bikers etc. It's lambing season and there have been prolems with people leaving field gates open and dogs worrying pregnant sheep. So, yes, stay home Please keep away

StepAwayFromGoogle · 28/03/2020 22:45

@Glittersparkle76 - you're completely missing the point. You don't get to make up your own rules just because you have a vulnerable person in your household. The rules are NOT 'you cannot leave your house in any circumstance'. The government rules are you can leave your house to exercise as long as you maintain social distancing. The rules might not be what you want them to be, but that's what they are.

happinessischocolate · 28/03/2020 22:50

When isolation fatigue sets in, those of us who drive to open spaces to walk now, will be glad we did

Or maybe you'll drive there, breakdown on the way back, have to call a garage or the AA, the mechanic is infected but currently has no symptoms, s/he gives you Covid19, 3 weeks later you're in hospital wondering why the hell you risked going for s walk.

The numbers are going to rise massively in the next couple of weeks, do you want to be in those numbers ?

Glittersparkle76 · 28/03/2020 22:55

Yes I am aware that at the moment people aren't forbidden to exercise,I'm not making up any rules as I don't have the authority to do so-obviously.The sooner we follow France and forbid it the better.I bet if you were in my shoes you would be singing a completely different tune, your attitude of "Oh it's hard staying in with a 5 and 2 year old" is laughable. You are the epitome of 'Well it doesn't affect me so I don't care,I need to entertain my kid's.I just hope to god you never find yourself in my shoes cos I'm sure you're attitude would be totally different then.

StepAwayFromGoogle · 28/03/2020 23:05

@Glittersparkle76 - that is utterly unfair and completely uncalled for. You are clearly very angry and I'm not sure why you are choosing to take it out on me. I'm not saying it doesn't affect me so I don't care. I'm saying I'm taking all the necessary precautions to ensure that I'm not passing on to or picking up a virus from anyone else. We're maintaining social distance - more than two metres - and only exercising once a day. And France haven't forbidden exercise. Not sure where you've got that from.

doofusmoof · 28/03/2020 23:10

The government rules are you can leave your house to exercise as long as you maintain social distancing.

This

Gbtch · 28/03/2020 23:10

Like you, I thought “ this doesn’t make sense” But once you start making exceptions,or “being reasonable“, you complicate the issue. Every one of us will have slight deviations from the rules that suit us and are reasonable standing in isolation.
Trouble is these deviations lead to more minor deviations until it gets so complex and far from the original intention that it becomes untenable.
The simpler the rule, the easier to enforce, and the less staff required to enforce it.
It makes sense therefore, in the interest of everyone , to comply with the simple rule.

LittleRootie · 28/03/2020 23:18

Trouble is these deviations lead to more minor deviations

There's no evidence for that. In fact, just going by my observations today, people are going out less as the lockdown progresses. The roads were practically empty and we only saw 4 other people at the meadow and woods where we walked.
