@SchadenfreudePersonified

Your posts are always a highlight, thank you!

In my fridge, unless it’s moving, it’s still edible. and even then if I can club it with something

OlaEliza · 27/03/2020 20:00

Have people not heard of freezing things?!

But, but, but what about the people that live in one room with no appliances 😔

userxx · 27/03/2020 20:04

@oakleaffy I think so many of us grew up in homes that just didn't waste food, it's alien to us. I can't get my head around it!! If there ever was any left over food, the dog got it.

oakleaffy · 27/03/2020 20:06

I have lived like that in the past...not at all easy :) A fridge is really essential, otherwise milk turns and cheese sweats.
The Victorians had larders and ice boxes... it is true...there are people in UK in 2020 who have no fridge even.

SnoozyLou · 27/03/2020 20:13

Saw it coming a mile off.

oakleaffy · 27/03/2020 20:14

@userxx..Ah....Dogs....The GREATEST disposal units known to mankind.

I think it is how one has been brought up... Not to waste.

It was so sad seeing my friend's Lurcher the other day...First day of 'lockdown'.....I usually have some food scraps for her, but she couldn't come in...nor could I stroke her....

The sooner this lockdown is over, the better for us all..
I wish shops brought in rationing.... I expect a lot of flour will go off.... :(

I can't find any, ...pre self isolating, my DS said ''Aldi have loads of flour''.....I went there...and found what DS thought was 'flour' was unbranded sugar... Smile

bringonyourwreckingball · 27/03/2020 20:15

We’re wasting less than usual (very little in fact) because we’re all home and not going anywhere. Usually DH and I both work long hours, the kids have many evening activities, I meal plan and online shop - it often doesn’t work out when plans change and stuff goes out of date and I don’t have time to cook it into something I can freeze. Now it’s more ‘that’s about to go out of date/off, what can I do with it?’ And we’re all eating together rather than the kids at 6:30 and me and DH nearer 9.

Ronnie27 · 27/03/2020 20:16

I don’t believe anyone would throw those bananas away to start with.

voddiekeepsmesane · 27/03/2020 20:26

Nope those bananas and the few fresh looking things have been place for effect. There is no way of knowing what is inside the bread bags I know many people who put food scrapes inside them. Just another shit stirring story to make people feel guilt.

GatoradeMeBitch · 27/03/2020 20:29

Maybe something else went on there. You wouldn't throw those bananas out, they look new!

JaneEyre7 · 27/03/2020 20:32

I said the same - most of it will go to landfill. Their freezers will be too full to fit anything else into it.

I'm vegetarian, and literally go into meltdown if any meat gets wasted in our house. It's bad enough knowing an animal died for it, let alone wasting it. We freeze our meat and fish apart from ham and bacon, and defrost as we need it.

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 27/03/2020 20:35

Lots of that food could of been frozen though ... and those bananas weren’t even ripe!

Fake story perhaps? Why would anyone throw those bananas away? And bread can be frozen.

We ordered too much of a few things with our online delivery but took it to neighbours. We’ve frozen what we can and I’m making sure we eat all the fresh stuff before anything else. We have a few brown bananas that I’m planning on making into banana bread (which I’ve never done before!)

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 27/03/2020 20:36

Maybe it’s the woman’s bin on the thread the other day who thought she’d poisoned her DH after spraying everything with bleach? Grin

annamie · 27/03/2020 20:52

OP, why are you lying saying there was a pile on? I never saw your original thread, but just found it and, as suspected, there was no pile on, just some people agreeing and some disagreeing with you. If anything, most agreed with you.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/a3858306-this-is-disgusting?msg_id=95077226#95077226

One person did say that she thought the story you posted was rubbish but she also agreed with you that people are buying too much food. She didn’t say you were talking rubbish.

Stop being so dramatic!

Dennisreynoldsduster · 27/03/2020 20:54

Jesus. I felt really guilty because I had to throw away some chicken breasts today - well within date but discoloured and smelt rank. I can’t believe people are being so wasteful I’m taking such care to try to use everything and not waste anything

madcatladyforever · 27/03/2020 20:59

I haven't bought any fresh food because I know I can't eat it all and I try to limit shopping to once a month. Frozen veg are just as good as fresh and so is frozen fruit. I've got a freezer full and just eat what I need, no waste.

dingit · 27/03/2020 21:05

Annamie my title was meant to be a play on words

Just goes to show how stupid the stockpilers have been.. no room to store it all. Now it’s going off, so it’s being chucked or , perfectly usable food from their already full freezers are being wasted to make room for stockpiled stuff that probably won’t get eaten anyway.
Grrr...

SchadenfreudePersonified · 28/03/2020 11:26

Milk starting to get sour can be made into cheese. I make mine into paneer!

What?

How? I love paneer!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 28/03/2020 11:30

OnceUponAMidnightBeery

Oh - thank you!

That's kind of you to say.

< prepares to club a lump of cheese >

PamelaPupkin · 28/03/2020 11:36

We’ve started meal planning again and buying for the week rather than going every day like we used to.

A - reduces trips.
B - saves money.

Must try to keep it up once things go back to normal.

billy1966 · 28/03/2020 11:38

Not religious here...but waste is the BIG sin to me.

Can't bear it.

Just used stonking cream to make delicious scones....very fattening but so delicious.

I get a huge buzz from using up food that is turning...

MoonBlood · 28/03/2020 11:40

I suspect this is fake.

I’m not sure about fake, but I did see that there were a lot of bins like this due to students having to abandon digs and get home ASAP, often alone with a lot to carry and having to make on the spot decisions about what to take or not. Many of which are international students who can’t take all that food with them even if they wanted to.

There’s an awful lot of short sightedness at the moment, people everywhere are in wildly varying situations but that just doesn’t seem to occur to some.

Icare1234 · 28/03/2020 11:50

It’s quite easy to be judgmental and I include myself in that (for me on other stuff).
I think people may be panic buying what is available rather than like/know how to cook/child will eat.

MN has a large number of posters who know how to cook, have facilities such as cooker, baking trays etc to make banana bread. They have facilities to store eg freezer bags/containers and freezer space.

I don’t have as many skills and I expect lots don’t. In normal times I try not to waste but usually live alone and pack sizes are too big (no market close to get just what I need). I find bulk cooking/portion hard. It makes me wasteful but not a dreadful person.

Gingernaut · 28/03/2020 12:03

This is the article the pictures come from.

There is mention of international students having to clear out quickly before the country went on lockdown.
