Nobody would throw that away surely. Those bananas are just right. That could all be frozen. I just despair sometimes.

Smellbellina · 27/03/2020 19:20

I agree, who would throw away just ripe bananas?

PristineCondition · 27/03/2020 19:21

Theres bins like that on my road. Im struggling with it to be honest. On facebook theres pleas from oap and assisted living places actually begging for fresh food as they are not getting deliveries 😩

endofthelinefinally · 27/03/2020 19:22

I just despair at the stupidity and ignorance.
I just can't get my head round it.
No words.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 27/03/2020 19:22

I went out for my designated exercise at about 7am on bin day. I definitely saw much larger amounts of food overflowing from the bins than usual. Fruit still in bags and bread still in wrappers. Even full cartons of milk (hadnt even poured it away). People panic bought without even thinking about whether they would be able to eat it before the expiry date......

slipperywhensparticus · 27/03/2020 19:23

People were panic buying from Feb in my area because I was locked down first week of march we already had toilet roll issues

annamie · 27/03/2020 19:23

We have not stockpiled anything, not even loo roll. In fact, we have been buying less.

What kind of idiot stockpiles perishables anyway?

Lynda07 · 27/03/2020 19:23

In the past people often found stuff in the back of their fridge which they'd forgotten or misread the date so had to throw away, regrettable but it happened. Bananas are a difficult one because you can often only buy a pack of them and if you are on your own, a couple often go off - not everyone makes banana bread :-). There were never any comments from the refuse departments.

Now rubbish is not only snooped in but comments are made. Not fair really. Most of us know not to waste food but it happens.

endofthelinefinally · 27/03/2020 19:25

My DH comes from a very poor country.
He gets really upset if people waste food.
I am very careful about buying, preparing, freezing, using up left overs.
Nobody would throw food away if they were really poor/hungry.
It is dreadful.

lyralalala · 27/03/2020 19:28

Is that not one bin?

That could be explained in a multitude of ways - fridge/freezer breaking down, householder in hospital, householder dead

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are households that are binning too much food, but that looks like a whole shop that's been binned for a reason.

Marieo · 27/03/2020 19:28

Noooo, how horrible. So much to be done with those bananas, people who would have eaten the other bits, and things that could have been frozen. I always meal plan as I hate running out of food or throwing food away, and it helps with both.

lowlandLucky · 27/03/2020 19:32

I dont even throw the veg peelings out without using them to make stock or soup first

HelloBolloxMyOldFriend · 27/03/2020 19:34

If you don't make banana bread Lynda, Google "recipes with bananas" then and find something more suited to what you can make. No reason to waste.

dementedma · 27/03/2020 19:34

I fecking hate food waste. rubbery parsnips went into soup yesterday. Pears into a cake today.

HelloBolloxMyOldFriend · 27/03/2020 19:36

@lowlandLucky A wonderful idea!

I've wanted to start a thread for ideas and recipes like this so people can stretch their food, their money and get by in these hard times.

DishingOutDone · 27/03/2020 19:36

I dont understand why some are saying here oh no its fake, or that could be explained by x y and z. Do you like to believe that everyone is a fair and conscientious person? Why?

People are selfish. I wish I had saved the article over a week ago it was on the BBC and they had some behavioural scientist on there saying in panic buying situations most food is thrown away, not eaten.

Daffodil55 · 27/03/2020 19:37

In the supermarkets huge amounts of prepacked fresh fruit and veg not being sold so marked down and even then still so much unsold. It goes off so quickly, more so the soft fruits so where does it go if not sold even at 1/4 of the price?

I am buying a lot and it all gets eaten and hardly any wasted but the stock pilers seem to have forgotten to go every couple of days to buy the fresh stuff.

Oilyoilyoilgob · 27/03/2020 19:41

I can’t abide food waste, makes me sad and mad!

Tip for anyone throwing away potato peelings, they’re amazing tossed in oil and seasoning and baked in your oven, especially good if your oven is already on for something else 😋 same with carrot peelings (although I tend to leave the skin on but good if you’ve peeled stuff)

Over ripe fruit is good for crumbles or mixed through yoghurt, or overnight oats.

Overripe veg is good on home made pizzas too 😋

Lovemusic33 · 27/03/2020 19:43

My rubbish bin is less full than normal, I’m surprised as I have the kids home who produce more rubbish. We have hardly chucked any food away other than a chicken carcass and a mouldy orange I found in the fruit bowl. Would never chuck bananas away as they get eaten pretty quickly in my house. We have meal planned for this week to make sure we don’t buy more than we need.

dingit · 27/03/2020 19:47

I don't know how to link my thread, but I started one earlier in the week about this. Everyone piled in saying it was fake Angry

I too had this mentioned ''there will be a whole lot of the panic bought food that will go to waste....Billions of pounds worth has been bought, and we surely aren't eating more?
I lost an avocado to mould that went in the compost heap..I don't have a freezer, just an ice cream compartment in fridge, so cannot bulk buy food..... I have been very careful buying food that won't perish, but bananas when really ripe mash up beautifully...don't waste
them...compost them if you must.. :(

raspberryk · 27/03/2020 19:52

I think even the ambient goods people have bought will get thrown away as they've likely never cooked or eaten a chickpea in their life, nor used any flour.
I hope they donate it to a food bank before the use by dates!

fiddlethefiddles · 27/03/2020 19:54

I love the idea that the Danish supermarket had with clever pricing:

A supermarket in Denmark got tired of people hoarding hand sanitizer, so came up with their own way of stopping it.

1 bottle kr40 (€5.50)
2 bottles kr1000 (€134.00) each bottle.

oakleaffy · 27/03/2020 19:55

I can’t abide food waste, makes me sad and mad!
Same!... And same for mum...I threw away a scrap of milk in her fridge last year, and opened as new bottle...Mum said ''I was saving that for my coffee!''
I don't peel potatoes, as like the skins too :)

oakleaffy · 27/03/2020 19:57

Flour!...it is harder to find than heroin here. A jest, but I went round so many shops over days searching for it...just plain flour, and found none.
