Tesco coronavirus delivery!

I know I should be grateful that I had a Tesco delivery (my first ever) but was horrified when the driver arrived with his crates and then proceeded to handle every item without gloves. I realise these things have been 'picked by other hands' but why can't they use bags just during the pandemic. AIBU to worry that every single item he touched could be comtaminated?

I like the PP who said Thank you Tesco. I agree, they’ve been fantastic delivering to me this week and I am very grateful. And hardly any substitutions.

OverUnderSidewaysDown · 27/03/2020 17:17

Oh and everything was in bags although I dont usually have them.

Fluffycloudland77 · 27/03/2020 17:20

I washed everything except the flour. I have that in the utility till Monday.

Haveitheright · 27/03/2020 17:21

Yes I was surprised at this with my Asda delivery the other day.
Especially as he coughed getting out of the cab, had no gloves on, put the crates on the doorstep, which I emptied, and he then took the crates off me, as he had done to probably 20 other households.
Terrible infection control procedure.
He should get out of the cab, put (fresh) gloves on and then do the delivery. I blame Asda not the lone delivery driver but, at the very least I expected bags so the customer could just lift the bags out of the crates, so only the packer then me had touched, rather than the driver & every previous householder he’d delivered to -madness.

I told Tesco on the form we are self isolating. I left bags outside, but actually they delivered in carrier bags. I washed my hands then unpacked, wiping a few things off with hand sanitizer where I could (plastic etc). Put stuff away and washed my hands again. I think that's as good as I could get it in terms of lowering infection rates. Very grateful for the delivery.
P.S. My parents offered to refill his tea flash and invited him in (they don't really understand) but he said no :)

maggiecate · 27/03/2020 17:24

Gloves give him some protection but they don't protect you - so many people have handled your shopping in its journey to your door. Offering him the chance to wash his hands would have been more effective.

adaline · 27/03/2020 17:25

All the Tesco deliveries should be coming in bags at the moment.

But gloves really don't provide the protection that people think they do. People still touch their noses/faces while wearing gloves.

Ginkypig · 27/03/2020 17:34

I got an email from them to say that everything from now on would be delivered in bags wether you have chosen that or not. There was always an option on the last page where you ticked yes bags or no but that may have been removed

I don't know why unless you wanted him to he unpacked every item then presumably handed each item to you. I'm obviously not saying it didn't happen just it seems quite random and odd.

Iv had a delivery every week for years and they always put the crates down at the front door one at a time I unpack each in to my own bags then he/she takes them away. They would bring them in or unpack if I needed and some offer or ask if I need them to but none have just started unpacking without warning.

Well mine that had been booked for three weeks was cancelled two hours before it was supposed to arrive... Not got another one for another three weeks!! That's me and dd off to the shops then to try and get nearly two months worth of supplies, great AngryAngryAngry

My bagless delivery was in bags this week, he stood back and signed for the delivery. He was late and absolutely knackered but also really upbeat and his wife is a nurse, he couldn't remember the last time they saw each.

annamie · 27/03/2020 17:42

YABU. I have been self-isolating like crazy (haven't been out in 2 weeks) but I think you're overthinking this.

FAQs · 27/03/2020 17:42

@babycornplease they emailed a day or so ago to say there is a 80 item limit and to amend baskets was yours over 80 items?

LittleLittleLittle · 27/03/2020 17:43

@Haveitheright contact Asda and inform them what the driver did.

ChikiTIKI · 27/03/2020 17:45

If you went to the shop, the person on the till would have to touch every item, unless it was a small enough shop to do self scan. But then you would have to use the touch screen a lot. Not really a way around it. Gloved hands are just as clean as washed hands.

SpockPaperScissorsLizardRock · 27/03/2020 17:46

I got a Tesco delivery yesterday and it was all bagged due to corona. He left it on the drive and then I picked it up.

babycornplease · 27/03/2020 17:47

@FAQs nope, there were about forty items in it... forty lovely items of essentials like food, dog food, nappies, etc..

Single asthmatic parent here, with a hyperactive toddler who refuses to sit in a trolly so must be strait jacketed into her buggy, so it will take me at least three or four shopping trips to get that stuff... gutted. Actually cried when I got the text (three times, and three emails as well, just to really confirm that they had cancelled the order...).

lyralalala · 27/03/2020 17:47

Until this afternoon only deliveries to people who said they were isolating were automatically bagged

Branster · 27/03/2020 17:50

They are not provided with proper gloves and you can’t buy them anywhere. What do you expect?

Redredwine99 · 27/03/2020 17:50

I got a delivery yesterday, I had advised that we were in quarantine on the delivery instructions, driver left it all bagged on my doorstep

FAQs · 27/03/2020 17:50

@babycorn that's awful, did they give a reason?? I'm also a single parent, my dd has Asthma but she is a teen so can stay at home but I'm really worried about the food situation, esp situations like yours and have mentioned it to Gingerbread, I don't know if they will do anything ?

babycornplease · 27/03/2020 17:54

@FAQs nope, just 'ishoos' at the store and therefore it would be cancelled... rang customer services in tears and they said there was nothing they could do... and to suck it up basically... my elderly mum has to go and grab me some basics during the oap shopping hour this morning.

I get that there are people far worse off than me, I suppose at least I can go out, but I've had a delivery pass with them for yonks, so it's not like I am a new customer! And as I said, it's going to take me a lot of trips to get the stuff we needed as I can't physically carry it all...

Really added insult to injury when I saw my neighbours get their third (yes THIRD!!!) delivery this morning in a week 😭😭😭

Aesopfable · 27/03/2020 17:56

Tesco have also just introduced an 80 item limit to their online shopping.... (you get to keep more if already ordered unless you edit your basket)

MinkowskisButterfly · 27/03/2020 17:56

I had a delivery from asda this morning and was really impressed. Everything was bagged (they don't allow plastic bags normally)and the driver unloaded at my front door, knocked and stepped back 2metres whilst I collected from my doorstep.

Chrisinthemorning · 27/03/2020 17:58

I am marigolds on, washing up bowl of dettol/ bleach in water, wipe down everything that arrives in the house.
Otherwise dettol spray and leave 24 hours.
Only exception fresh fruit and veg. Might try white vinegar in water for that.

FAQs · 27/03/2020 17:59

One of my neighbours has somehow managed to get deliveries from Tesco, Asda and Sainsburys in a week, there are 3 of them and one is still at work (military) and also gets fed at work, I don't know how they do it!
