To be delighted that Brighthouse is about to go bust?

It’s not all bad news at the moment. Smile.

Brighthouse is a nasty, exploitative business which rips off the poor, the uneducated and the vulnerable by selling household goods at inflated prices on finance at extortionate interest rates. Their business model relies on creating spirals of debt in a similar way to Wonga.

Normally I would sympathise with the staff of businesses which go bust, but not in this case. Good riddance.

I feel sorry for the staff but this company is no loss.

AgeLikeWine · 27/03/2020 16:08

Wow. Sadly your principles don't pay other people's bills.

No, but working at Tesco, Asda or Sainsbury’s does. I believe they could use 2,700 extra pairs of hands at the moment.

And considering these are only temp jobs, what happens when they're paid off from them?

AnotherMurkyDay · 27/03/2020 16:18

Thing is whilst I agree that those businesses are exploitative, how are poor people meant to get finance? It's only the companies that work like this that seem to offer finance to people in difficult financial circumstances.

Wtfdoipick · 27/03/2020 16:19

If our local supermarkets are anything to go by those jobs will be lucky to last another couple of weeks

TheGirlWithAPrince · 27/03/2020 16:23

I remember looking at how much a ps4 was... 220 from game new... Or brighthouse 1050 paying monthly hahaha

MarginalGain · 27/03/2020 16:25

It's not a nice business, but I'm not sure the alternative (no finance for poor people) is any better.

TrudysTerribleFringe · 27/03/2020 16:26

Some other company will spring up and fo the gap.

TheMemoryLingers · 27/03/2020 16:26

YABU because their employees will suffer. Not everyone has the luxury of being able to choose where they work.

Purpleclownsuit · 27/03/2020 16:27

I’m sad. Can’t get credit anywhere on disability benefits (despite a great credit rating) so they were always a back up option for emergency situations.

MintyMabel · 27/03/2020 16:28

I understand it’s awful to lose a job, but if you chose to work for a company who’s business model is to rip people like you off, I do question anyone who takes that job.

They are not the only people hiring.

WaitrosesCheapestVodka · 27/03/2020 16:29

It's a vile business, but I worry people on very low incomes who are completely hand-to-mouth may have lost one option of buying big items.

Let's hope a less exploitative business model swoops in.

FlamingoAndJohn · 27/03/2020 16:29

I feel for the staff but glad to see them go.

Purpleclownsuit · 27/03/2020 16:30

They are not the only people hiring.

Depends where you live, surely? People will have to feed their kids and morals might have to go out the window in that case.

Sallycinammonbangsthedruminthe · 27/03/2020 16:31

I Lived on an estate once mainly social housing and so many people had beautiful homes furnished from brighthouse...they had way more lovely stuff than I did but they used to sit watching the tv with no picture cos they couldnt put a pound in the slot to work it! Between brighthouse and the other robbing bastards provident man/woman these households had no money and were in debt up to their eyeballs with extortionate repayments...I get why they did it ,they needed to try to provide homes for their families but then by doing this they couldnt feed their kids even beans on toast,These companies thrive by misery..they promise hope topeople with nothing then fleece them forever more. You are not unreasonable I agree with you totally OP..lnext week when some other unscrupulous company comes into to take their place. the misery will begin again..

HPLikecraft · 27/03/2020 16:32

This isn’t just finance though; it’s charging their customers super inflated prices. Bigger prices for poorer people. That’s just awful and exploitative.

TheMemoryLingers · 27/03/2020 16:32

They are not the only people hiring

How do you know - do you have recruitment data for the localities of every single person who works there?

Even if 100 employers were hiring in your area, if 99 of them reject your application, you take the one that does want you.

Remarks like that make me wonder if some people have ever been in a position where they have to get a job.

That's not 'I need to get a job within the next year or so' or 'I need to get a job because things are a bit tight on just my partner's wages' but 'I need to get a job to put the next meal on the table and keep a roof over my head'.

MrsSnitchnose · 27/03/2020 16:33

What will they do about the people who have credit with them? Most of my best friend's stuff comes from them
