To be delighted that Brighthouse is about to go bust?

It’s not all bad news at the moment. Smile.

Brighthouse is a nasty, exploitative business which rips off the poor, the uneducated and the vulnerable by selling household goods at inflated prices on finance at extortionate interest rates. Their business model relies on creating spirals of debt in a similar way to Wonga.

Normally I would sympathise with the staff of businesses which go bust, but not in this case. Good riddance.

I agree AnotherMurkyDay

What are poor people supposed to do now?

user3274826 · 27/03/2020 16:35

Thing is whilst I agree that those businesses are exploitative, how are poor people meant to get finance? It's only the companies that work like this that seem to offer finance to people in difficult financial circumstances.

In what circumstances do you imagine low income families need items from Bright House? There are always alternative options. Freecycle, second hand.

IHaveBrilloHair · 27/03/2020 16:38

I can't get credit as I'm on disability benefits too.
I once had a look to see what they had I'd my washer/fridge/TV suddenly needed replacing, and this is what got me, dud they have the basics, even if you paid back double?
No, they bloody well did not, only top of the range stuff that no one needs.
That's why I hate them.

wherethecloudsaregoing · 27/03/2020 16:38

Washing machines

Laptop (essential item especially now)

Oven

Bed

Freecycle is fine IF you can get something, and you know someone who can pick it up at the snap of fingers. Otherwise, by the time you ask for it it has gone. And you have to pay someone to pick it up. Ditto second hand.

Scuse typos.
I save minimal with Credit Union now, £10 a week but it adds up, plus you can get a loan from them for a cheap 2nd hand appliance should you need.

lmcneil003 · 27/03/2020 16:42

I Lived on an estate once mainly social housing and so many people had beautiful homes furnished from brighthouse

More fool them to have beautiful homes they cannot afford. Just make do with a non-beautiful home.

That’s a slither of joy! I don’t even feel bad for people losing their job because I think it’s mortally reprehensible to work for companies like that - their wages are paid through scamming poor and stupid people!

IamDisappeared · 27/03/2020 16:44

The debts won't disappear with collapse of bright house, another company will buy the debt at a reduced rate and still try to recover it.

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 27/03/2020 16:46

A friend of mine had her washer go a year ago. With 3 kinds and no money for several loads at the laundrette a week, a washer is kind of essential.
She tried Currys and Euronics, no help at all. Bright House sorted her out very quickly with an affordable washer they delivered and installed etc. Okay it cost £100 more than it should, but without Bright House shed have been screwed.

It's nice to look down your nose at places that help out the poor when you've never needed their services, just like it's nice to be a small minded judgemental ass hat when you've always had a cushy life.
Never forget, there but for the grace of God...

Hopefully a company which is fairer and less exploitative will fill the gap.

lowlandLucky · 27/03/2020 16:47

Whilst i will rejoice that when any business that steals from the poor or vulnerable goes bust , i worry about where those that needed to use Brighthouse will now get the money to buy washing machines, fridges, sofas etc The local moneysharks will be rubbing their hands together

ocarinan · 27/03/2020 16:49

Are people really saying that if they had a choice between working at Brighthouse and not having a roof over their and their children's heads they would choose the former? What about people for whom turning down a job can mean a benefits sanction?

WhatHappenedThen · 27/03/2020 16:49

I hate brighthouse but there is a reason people use it. People who have no other option use Brighthouse. What will they do when it’s gone?

Illegal money lenders perhaps?

MaybeDoctor · 27/03/2020 16:49

It's a horrible business model. But I can totally see how people get drawn into it.

Some kind of cooperative model is probably the answer:

OchAyeThaNoo · 27/03/2020 16:50

It is true that poor people can't get credit but if the situation is that bad do they really need a new £1000 PS4? A £800 washing machine when it can be bought for £149 in Argos? When I was poor I bought my washing machine for £30 off Facebook. My settee with two chairs was £80 out of a charity 2nd hand shop. You don't need to buy brand new and owe half your benefits or wages to unscrupulous lenders for the next 5 years.

I have as much sympathy for Brighthouse workers as I do when I hear about the scam call centres being raided in India and everyone being arrested.

wherethecloudsaregoing · 27/03/2020 16:51

I really dislike this assumption that the poor are (en masse, no less) vulnerable, stupid and need us nice middle class people to prevent them having nice homes.

How about we assume for a moment that they have autonomy, that they made a decision to pay high interest rates, and that they were okay with that decision?

Devlesko · 27/03/2020 16:54

This is good news, I hope it's followed by all the huge corporates, Virgin, Sky, Wetherspoons, Costa, Sports Direct, and starbucks.
Well, I can live in hope Grin

Brighthouse workers aren't breaking the law, they're trying to make a living. Would you rather be homeless or starving than work at brighthouse?

Jobseeker19 · 27/03/2020 16:55

My mum has been paying off BrightHouse from back when it was called Crazy George's.
I'm very happy to see it flop.

FlamingoAndJohn · 27/03/2020 16:57

If they are ok with that choice then they either don’t understand it or are in such a desperate situation and are being taken advantage of.

Permissionimpossible · 27/03/2020 16:58

There’s something deeply unpleasant with people who revel in other people’s misery.

Sapphiresunrise · 27/03/2020 17:00

Yes, I do feel sorry for those losing their jobs.
Between working at Brighthouse and being able to put a roof over my head vs being unemployed, i'd have chosen Brighthouse every time.
